Flower, Sun, and Rain for $10 →

XSEED’s holiday “Sale of Unrivaled Insanity” provides an uncommonly good deal on the weird Grasshopper game Flower, Sun, and Rain. It’s just $10 on the XSEED shop right now, as is Ragnarok DS, Ivy the Kiwi? on Wii (which is great), and a bunch of other stuff!

The full list of cheap stuff is in the image above. I’m not used to seeing actually cheap games on publisher stores…

“GHM’s” by Takasumi, featuring characters from The Silver Case, Flower, Sun, and Rain, No More Heroes, and Killer7.

Just another reminder: yes, No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle is coming out this month… on the same day that Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is. What awesome news for my wallet.

Game of the Year Flower, Sun, and Rain for $19.99 at GameStop (in-store) →

GameStop just dropped the DS port of Grasshopper Manufacture’s weird Flower, Sun, and Rain to $20. While a $10 price drop on the Suda 51-created adventure isn’t as thrilling as, say, the $9.99 price point that everyone will jump on, it’s still a price drop, and more importantly, it’s an excuse to link to this!

Matt “Fort90” Hawkins named Flower, Sun, and Rain his favorite game of 2009!

Not saying it’s the best playing game of 09, but it is without a doubt the most daring and easily the most interesting (the fact that it’s a remake of an obscure, import only PS2 title makes it all the more awkward and fitting).

He goes on to say that it’s okay if you tried the game and couldn’t get into it, which is the situation I unfortunately found myself in. I loved the world, the characters, the creepy, uneasy feeling about everything — I loved everything but trying to figure out the damn numbers for all the puzzles.

Even though it didn’t exactly work out for me, I respect this choice, because it’s interesting. And as someone who nominated Little King’s Story as the GOTY for a major website, I appreciate unusual choices! (I’m totally right about Little King’s Story).

Buy: Flower, Sun, and Rain ($19.99 @ Amazon, in stock)

Flower, Sun and Rain for $19.98 →

I suspect Xseed will cut Flower, Sun and Rain’s regular price to $19.98 soon, but until then, you can take advantage of this one-day Amazon deal and try out one of Goichi Suda’s early games. Oh, and make sure you don’t forget about the other DS game Xseed recently discounted.

“What truly makes the game so fascinating and enjoyable is its cast of characters, starting with Sumio, who’s an all around nice guy to a fault, which those he encounters are often quick to point out, due to his willingness to help anyone that crossed his path, no matter how undeserving or flat-out annoying they might be.

One constant highlight is the back and forth between him and Edo, an extremely enigmatic but ultimately nice fellow (to a certain degree), and it’s primarily from this interplay that Sumio begins to slowly evolve as the days go by.

Of all the years I’ve been playing video games, which is a lot, I simply cannot recall another title that features such richly defined characters. Rockstar’s offerings, with their ‘sophisticated’ personalities (i.e. they’re poorly conceived ethnic stereotypes that also curse a lot) can’t hope to possibly come close.”

— From Matt “Fort90” Hawkins’ review of Flower, Sun, and Rain. Yeah, that’s right, I’m linking to Fort90 twice today. That’s just what is happening.

Flower, Sun, and Rain is still a really interesting game to me, despite the fact that I didn’t actually enjoy playing it. I loved the setting, I thought the story and characters were very cool, but I found the number-based puzzles kind of frustrating. I still think I’m going to try it again when I’m in the mood for something kind of mellow.

Flower, Sun, and Rain may actually come out →

It’s a good time for … DS games that were announced a long-ass time ago. After the shock of Puchi Puchi Virus’s actual release, XSEED announced that Flower, Sun, and Rain has gone gold and will ship on June 16.

Will it actually ship on June 16? Will I actually get to play Suda 51’s Groundhog Day murder-mystery?

“When I developed Flower, Sun, and Rain on the PS2 all those years ago, it was one of the most difficult times at Grasshopper. I would like to jump into a time machine, go back to eight years ago, and tell myself not to worry, and that things were going to be all right, and that we were going to release this title on the DS, too.

But if I told myself that the game was going to be released on a handheld with two screens, I wouldn’t believe it.”

Grasshopper CEO Goichi Suda (Suda51), talking with Gamasutra about the Flower, Sun, and Rain DS remake and No More Heroes 2.

Flower, Sun, and Preorder Links →

I’m about 50% confident that Marvelous/XSEED will choose to release the DS remake of Suda51’s Flower, Sun, and Rain in the US, but in case they don’t, NCSX will stock the European version when it comes out in November.

I’m obligated to love it due to the fanservice addition of a Travis Touchdown costume, but it would be hard for me not to love an adventure game based on a Groundhog Day-esque concept, in which the protagonist also happens to be gradually driven insane by the repetition of the same day.
