“In my last job, I made a game called Chibi-Robo!” said Freakyforms director Hiroshi Moriyama, at the beginning of a new Iwata Asks interview focused on the downloadable 3DS game. “And the last game I made was called Okaeri! Chibi-Robo.”

In fact, Moriyama directed the first two Chibi-Robo titles (and likely the third, but I’m not sure he has the director credit on that?) while at Skip. He explained in the video interview that he was inspired to make Freakyforms when his niece found Chibi-Robo too difficult to play.

I’m totally not surprised that Moriyama used to work at Skip. Basically, whenever something weird and creative comes out of Japan, especially if it’s published by Nintendo, I assume that it was made by someone who was either Love-de-Lic staff, or staff of a company founded by someone from Love-de-Lic (like Skip).

This video is worth watching just for the surreal moment when Iwata proudly beams as he talks about being hesitant to greenlight the game.

Japan is killin’ it with these user-created Freakyforms creatures. They’re all like, “Oh, you slapped together a Formee that looks like Kirby? How cute. I made a hamburger with all the fixings. Boom Bap Pwwwww.”

This eShop game has been out over there 2 months, though, so Japanese gamers have had time to hone their Formee craft. If you You don’t have to wait that long to get good enough to make these yourself in Freakyforms — you can just scan the QR codes with the 3DS’s camera to bring them in your game. There’s a ton more of these here.

Tempted to get this game now. Shall we do it?

What are Formees? Well, Nintendo created a Freakyforms (a.k.a. Picture Lives) site explaining the creatures from today’s eShop release. Apparently Formees are any ridiculous thing you create out of different parts/limbs the game gives you. Also, they are puppy trucks.
I am sure Freakyforms is just too colorful and childlike in its visuals for most gamers to pick up — that $6.99 price isn’t helping — but as I’ve said in the past, everyone I know who’s played it has raved about how weird/fun it is. It also has QR code/StreetPass support for trading Formees. Someone buy this and let us know what you think!

Trailer for Freakyforms: Your Creations, Alive! (Picture Lives! in Japan), the Asobism-developed, Nintendo-published eShop game hitting the U.S. next week.

I know this user-generated content-focused game looks mondo weird, but everyone I know who’s played it, which is like three dudes, has said it’s really fun. And you don’t have to make strange mustachioed centipede aliens if you that’s’ not your thing — you could always just waddle around your world with Mega Man instead.
