The Retro Game Challenge 2 fan translation has arrived ⊟

By God, they’ve done it. The fan translation team led by Aaron Chmielowiec has released the first version of its Game Center CX 2/Retro Game Challenge 2 patch.

This thing looks hella professional! All the text and graphics have been changed. What an impressive effort for a game that, by all accounts, deserves this kind of love. I’m finally going to play those adventure games… my copy of the game is forever stopped there.

The new Game Center CX game looks great ⊟

Not Game Center CX 3, mind you — most people are calling that import booty butt. No, I mean Arino of 3rd Street, which the fan-translation group SA:GCCX introduced on April 1st.

So, even though GCCX3 and apparently the GCCX feature film are both disappointing, at least the series’ fans are making up for it with productions like this and the GCCX2 translation. The latter is coming along nicely, and that group’s lead Aaron Chmielowiec says he’s interested in eventually translating Namco Bandai’s retro minigame collection for DS, TV Game Exam/Our Video Game Exams! I’ve heard that game isn’t too great either, but it’s a DS import I never expected to see a translation for.

Game Center CX 2 fan translation update ⊟

I just wanted to remind you that this project is still alive, and it looks like the team is making a lot of progress with the adventure game that stymied previous fan translation efforts. Make sure to follow and participate in this GBAtemp thread for updates and a chance to share your opinions on how the localization should be handled (there’s a debate going on right now on how to handle references to pachinko).

Maybe it’s the year of Arino? We have a this fan translation, feature-length film, and a new game coming out in 2014 (the latter two for Japan)!

How is our plan coming along? ⊟

The Game Center CX 2 (or Retro Game Master 2 if you prefer) fan translation group has tinkered with those troublesome adventure games, and hasn’t immediately given up? And the text from the initial fan translation effort has all been dropped in? Sounds like the plan is coming along perfectly…

We have Game Center CX 2 & 3 news! ⊟

Here’s what we now know about Game Center CX: Arino in District 3 (that’s the subtitle according to Siliconera): it releases in Japan on January 23 as a retail title — it will even have a limited edition package that will be revealed at Tokyo Game Show next week.

And remember how we were a little worried that the initial set of revealed GCCX 3 minigames looked hella basic? It turns out that there will be 15 minigames in the final release, so some of them are bound to be more complex, right? Some of them will even have versus multiplayer, and the main game will feature a town map with places you can visit to play games (e.g. like at a candy shop or arcade), if Duckroll’s details are to be trusted.

Oh, and we have stuff to report on with the fan-translation for Game Center CX 2! So, Aaron Chmielowiec (Aaron in Japan) just swooped in and decided he was going to get things done, and already appears to have made significant progress. I’m not sure how this affects the original fan-translation team’s efforts, but that project stalled some time ago. Aaron now seems to be facing the same roadblock with GCCX2's adventure games that the team hit.

Translating the game is no problem; a lot of it is already done, and English logos have been made too,” says Nina Matsumoto, who worked on the fan translation with the original team. ”The hard part is hacking the game. Apparently the story adventure game is encoded in a way that makes it virtually impossible to dump the text? Or something like that.

Anyway, idgaf, I’m doing the Dhalsim dance (GIF credit to Valanirii).

Shit just got real with Retro Game Challenge 2
Here’s something wonderful that popped up in the comments of our Retro Game Challenge post earlier today — Nina Matsumoto (a.k.a. Space Cowboy, a.k.a. Zari-Gani) has joined the fan translation team for Game Center CX 2/Retro Game Challenge 2!
Nearly two years have passed since efforts to patch this revered DS sequel started, but it’s faced challenges due to the lack of translators willing to see this project through. That’s why we’re so excited about this news — Game Center CX fans will likely recognize Nina’s name from her involvement with the official Retro Game Master DVD set’s translation, the Game Center CX fansubs released through Something Awful, and the artwork featured on the Game Center CX in USA box!
The team is still looking for translators and experienced ROM hackers to help with the project, so drop them a line and help them make this happen please!

Sorry, man. That ship has sailed.

Xseed editor Jessica Chavez stating the obvious on Retro Game Challenge 2's chances of coming to the U.S., after describing the original game as “not particularly popular.”

Just doing our part to reopen old wounds. It’s hard to be too angry at Xseed, though, considering:

  1. it took a big chance publishing the first Retro Game Challenge, and delivered an amazing game
  2. it released The Last Story in the U.S. last week
  3. the Retro Game Master DVD will be out soon
  4. maybe the fan translation project is still alive

I was going to headline this post “Game Center CX 2 released in US*” but that’s too mean of a tease. Really, though, it has been … in a very small part.

The puzzle game Triotos is now available as a standalone iOS app, based on the “Super Game Computer” Triotos DX, for $3. It uses virtual buttons instead of a swipe-based control scheme, but it works reasonably well.

Weirdly, Namco Bandai put this on the US App Store, but didn’t translate it in the least. The title screen and menu are still in Japanese. Of course, it’s a puzzle game, and there are icons all over the place, so you’ll figure it out.

Do Wiz-Man next, Namco!

Haggle Man and Demon cameos in Super Mario Bros. Crossover 2.0 (skip to 2:52 - 3:06)!!! Okay, this video/indie project is so rad for dozens of reasons, but I can’t believe these two little-known heroes from Game Center CX and Retro Game Challenge's fake retro titles made it into this thing! We're told that they're only alternate costumes for other characters right now, but they may become playable characters eventually.

Developer Jay Pavlina will release this as a Flash game some time during the first quarter of 2012 — why Nintendo hasn’t hired this man yet to design an official Super Mario Bros. remix for its consoles is beyond me. You can play the original version of Super Mario Bros. Crossover, which is amazing in its own right, over here.

Retro Game Challenge 1 and 2 characters, drawn by Ashley Davis. Ashley went on a GCCX character spree last week on her fanart blog No Marios Allowed, but we were both indisposed at the time — Eric busting his ass on TGS news, me busting my ass at TGS.

So enjoy these images now — like you have a choice to do anything but enjoy them! Look at that Arino! Look at that Wiz-Man! If I were in charge of an American release of Retro Game Challenge 2 (and to be clear, I’m not, and neither is anyone else), I’d have already hired Ashley for the boxart.

Game Center CX fanart by Nina “Space Coyote” Matsumoto. Matsumoto drew up this very American fanart, rife with game references, in honor of host Shinya Arino’s upcoming LA appearance. “Getting this printed by someone who’s attending their fan event in Los Angeles this Friday so they could give it to Arino as a present.”
Now, not only do I want to see pictures from the trip, I want to see pictures of reactions to this picture.

New screens of the Retro Game Challenge 2 translation. This looks so professional! The edited English UI is great, the Triotos logo is great, everything looks really good. The idea that this is something people are doing for free, in their spare time, out of passion kind of blows my mind.

You guys are the best.
