New, super-powered handheld system announced last week: The Retro Boy Advance SP by Iron Halo.
The modded portable touts “3 awesome upgrades”:
- a 500 percent brighter backlit screen
- a pro-audio headphone jack
- 2GB flash memory to play NES/GB/GBC/GBA “back-ups” and media files (all legally acquired, we hope)
That last bullet point doesn’t really count as a built-in feature since it uses a flashcart, but then that would cut the number of added features down by 33 percent.
It looks like this is a one-off from Iron Halo, but you could probably get some other modder dudes to make you one of these for the right price.

Back to the mini cabinet, it’s a lot more impressive than LukeMorse1 gives it credit for! The machine doesn’t look nearly as hacked together as the XCKDIY’s similar Game Boy production, in my opinion. He says the cabinet is about 90 percent complete — you can watch an earlier video of the machine playing Ice Climbers here.

Game Boy Advance SP-style personal media player, available for around $50 from DealExtreme (in silver or black). Perfect for those of you who want a GBA form factor without having to involve actual GBA games.
The device has 2GB of flash memory, can play MP3/WMV audio and a few video formats, and has both an external speaker and a microphone (with voice recording capability). But most importantly, it looks like a Game Boy Advance SP, for pretty much no reason.
