Alligators and kissing twins: the key to marketing success with the Nintendo 3DS?

Thanks to the latest console sales results for the U.S. — which showed the PS3 outselling the 3DS in April — that were published last week, armchair pundits and forum trolls the world over have once again taken to asking questions like, “Is the 3DS Nintendo’s next Virtual Boy?”

A much better question to ask, in my humble opinion, would be something along the lines of: “Should Nintendo change tactics in marketing its latest portable system?” A quick look at the this Game Boy Camera (or Pocket Camera, as the peripheral was known in Japan) ad from 1997 suggests that, yes, maybe it should.

I’m not saying Nintendo’s marketing gurus should stick a bunch of alligators and kissing twins in all of their 3DS ads from now on, but a bit more frivolous fun and a little less sterile seriousness may do their system some good.

Night vision mod for Game Boy Camera by Freque. One last Game Boy post to close out Gunpei Yokoi’s birthday!

This “White/Night Mod” adds a white LED for illumination and an infrared LED for night vision, both of which can be activated with their own slider switch. Now you can capture images of UFOs in the night sky, record Paris Hilton-style sex videos, and catch adulterous partners in the act using Cheaters-style surveillance shots, all with a Game Boy!

Game Boy Camera hat. Speaking of strange caps, did you know the GB Camera had one of its own, too? In Japan, where it was called the Pocket Camera, the accessory’s instruction manual featured a cute, hat-wearing mascot and even a page with a paper headpiece cut-out.

Everett Guerney took a photo of that page:

Someone should make a mini-Waluigi cap for him to wear.

New app simulates Game Boy Camera on iPhone →

The “GB Camera” app allows users to take pictures in the classic Game Boy Camera resolution (almost) and color scheme. In addition to faithful GB Camera simulation, it features a bunch of options, like upscaling to 1600 x 1200, adjusting the brightness and contrast, and turning off dithering for an even blockier look. This totally makes me wish I could afford one of those fancy-ass phones! I’d grab a Game Boy iPhone case and the Game Boy Springboard skin and pretend that I had spent a lot less money and just bought a damn Game Boy!

The developer, Epicore, also made a “C64 Camera” app.

Is Game Boy Camera nostalgia what’s hot right now? Did Jeremy Parish’s tutorial on GB Camera-izing your photos turn into a trend? Or do two recent Game Boy Camera things (three if you count Eric’s Photoshop Action, which I so do) not really constitute a trend?

How To: Fake a Game Boy Camera image →

As unfortunate as it is that DSi Camera doesn’t include a Game Boy Camera filter (future firmware update?), you can still bring your shots into Photoshop to create a faux-GBC image with this step-by-step guide posted by 1UP’s Jeremy Parish.

Or if you’re lazy, you can download and install this Photoshop Action I created based on the 1UP walkthrough. Just make sure your image is sized at 160x144!

Oh, and if you can figure out where all the above images are from, congratulations, you read our site too much.
