Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer GB 2 intro. The actual intro cinematic begins around the 01:18 mark, but I wanted you to hear the arresting title screen music. The song that comes in around 04:30, when the game actually begins with a chase through a dungeon, is bangin’, too. Really, you should just watch/listen to the whole thing.

By the way, this is the Game Boy Color release that Chunsoft remade for the DS in 2008. You’ll notice that the intro features the same sandstorm that Jero braved when shooting his commercial for Shiren the Wanderer DS 2. In fact, one of those guys dragging Shiren’s body at the tower might be Jero! Mind blown!

Ninja Senki, an upcoming Game Boy Color-styled indie game featuring “a blue ninja, shurikens and revenge!” Also, Tanooki testicles. So, yeah, watch out for that.

Jonathan Lavigne, an artist/coder at Ubisoft Montreal, is working on this curious personal project. His commercial contributions include TMNT for GBA (the only worthwhile TMNT game in recent memory), Open Season for GBA (which has some fucking gorgeous pixel art), and the Scott Pilgrim game currently in development. Impressive!

Though Ninja Senki is “pretty much feature complete”, Lavigne says he needs to add new levels and enemies, as well as debug and polish the game. He hopes to finish and put out the title before Christmas but doesn’t specify for what platform — I presume PC, but perhaps if we’re on our best behavior, he’ll also release this throwback platformer as a GBA or GBC ROM. I’d love to see something this cute and bloody on an old handheld!

Lavigne’s also developing a fantasy-themed Breakout game that looks like the god damn cat’s galoshes:

Racketboy's best undiscovered Game Boy games →

Looking for some (relatively) new Game Boy games? Of course you are. The excellent retro gaming site Racketboy put together a list of uncommon, under-the-radar Game Boy and Game Boy Color games that is among the best of their list features. There’s bound to be something on there that either you’ve never heard of, or forgot about.

I’m totally going to be looking for Avenging Spirit and the Dexter’s Laboratory game. I knew the latter, which came out while I was working in game retail, was an Elevator Action ripoff, but I didn’t know it was a real Elevator Action game, licensed from Taito and reskinned with Cartoon Network imagery. Neato!

Green Beret (Rush’n Attack), developed by NAPS Team for Game Boy Color but eventually cancelled in 2000.

I had Rush’n Attack for the NES, and it was balls. All I remember about the game was punching dozens of Russian soldiers. This GBC game looks like more of that. More balls, is what I’m saying.

A happier Halloween for two readers

Our latest Tiny Contest has come to an end, and so has our temporary possession of the totally sweet stuff we got to give away. The lucky winners, and their comments, are:

  • Keebler: “does anyone know when zombie bbq comes out? i can’t find it on amazon.com..”
  • AdamRobezzoli: “You mean it protects your DS and stops your armpits from stinking!?”

We’ll have stuff out in the mail for you two soon, and we’ll come up with some other way to trick the rest of you into commenting in a bit as well! Thanks for playing “Type things into a comment window!”

Tiny Contest: Totally Thematic Halloween Edition

For the latest Tiny Contest, we’ve decided to offer two prizes that each correspond to one aspect of the full Halloween experience. One winner will receive a Zombie BBQ poster, measuring about 24” x 36”, which represents the oooh scary part.

The other winner will receive a Game Boy Color-style DS Lite pouch, handmade by Etsy crafter janis13. It’s basically a Halloween costume for your DS, except that unlike the Beetlejuice suit I wore when I was 8, it’s perfectly appropriate for everyday use.

As usual, all you need to win are your (real, not just ‘GIMME STUFF’) comments.  Starting now and ending at 11:59 PM CST Tuesday, October 21, every comment you make on this and upcoming posts will enter you for these prizes. Commenting on this post counts as one entry, and on any post after this counts as two.
