Haggle Man and Demon cameos in Super Mario Bros. Crossover 2.0 (skip to 2:52 - 3:06)!!! Okay, this video/indie project is so rad for dozens of reasons, but I can’t believe these two little-known heroes from Game Center CX and Retro Game Challenge’s fake retro titles made it into this thing! We’re told that they’re only alternate costumes for other characters right now, but they may become playable characters eventually.

Developer Jay Pavlina will release this as a Flash game some time during the first quarter of 2012 — why Nintendo hasn’t hired this man yet to design an official Super Mario Bros. remix for its consoles is beyond me. You can play the original version of Super Mario Bros. Crossover, which is amazing in its own right, over here.

Retro Game Challenge 1 and 2 characters, drawn by Ashley Davis. Ashley went on a GCCX character spree last week on her fanart blog No Marios Allowed, but we were both indisposed at the time — Eric busting his ass on TGS news, me busting my ass at TGS.

So enjoy these images now — like you have a choice to do anything but enjoy them! Look at that Arino! Look at that Wiz-Man! If I were in charge of an American release of Retro Game Challenge 2 (and to be clear, I’m not, and neither is anyone else), I’d have already hired Ashley for the boxart.

Game Center CX fanart by Nina “Space Coyote” Matsumoto. Matsumoto drew up this very American fanart, rife with game references, in honor of host Shinya Arino’s upcoming LA appearance. “Getting this printed by someone who’s attending their fan event in Los Angeles this Friday so they could give it to Arino as a present.”

Now, not only do I want to see pictures from the trip, I want to see pictures of reactions to this picture.

New screens of the Retro Game Challenge 2 translation. This looks so professional! The edited English UI is great, the Triotos logo is great, everything looks really good. The idea that this is something people are doing for free, in their spare time, out of passion kind of blows my mind.

You guys are the best.

Retro Game Challenge 2 translation update!

Can you believe this is our 5000th post on this goofy site? I was worried we wouldn’t find a news post befitting this milestone, but news about the fan translation for Game Center CX 2 Retro Game Challenge 2, one of our most anticipated tiny cartridges ever, is perfect for the occasion!

We haven’t heard much about the translation team’s efforts since its site launched in February, but they’ve now revamped the project page to make it easier to relay updates. It’s still light on content, but you can see a few new English screenshots from there. Make sure to click the sprites at the bottom, too, for some nice character art.

Ryuza, who maintains the site, tells us that we’ll likely get some new screenshots soon to show off the progress made from project lead Xvirus and his team. He adds, “From what I’ve seen, the translators have a lot of the text from the conversations with Arino translated, so things are going pretty well.” I’m just thrilled this isn’t dead!

Game Center CX 2 translation project page →

The Game Center CX 2 / Retro Game Challenge 2 fan translation project, possibly the most important work of our generation, is now underway and has a web site!

Modeled after the Japanese GCCX2 hub, the site doesn’t have much content yet other than a single shot of Triotos’ translated title screen and the videos we shared before.

It does, however, reveal that the project is seven strong — coder Xvirus (Shiren the Wanderer DS 2 translation), four translators, GCCX expert and SCROLL publisher Ray Barnholt serving as editor, and Tiny Cartridge reader Ryuza working on the graphics and web site.

Now, let us all pray this is one of the few DS translation projects that actually sees completion.

Retro Game Challenge romhack ruse revealed

Okay dudes, bad news. The enigmatic “arino2011” who has been posting videos of a seemingly translated Retro Game Challenge 2, featuring references to our beloved mascot, has revealed that the project is not an official localization, but, indeed, a fan work.

Xvirus, who also worked on the translation patches Shiren the Wanderer DS 2 and Torneko no Daibouken Advance, told us that he is the one behind the mysterious videos, rather than any official DS publisher.

Shiren and Torneko have been put on an indefinite hiatus as I don’t currently have a translator (they all seem to disappear on me),” Xvirus said. “After watching a video review on CX2, I thought I’d give it a go and, after a few hurdles, found out that it wasn’t too incredibly complicated.” So it is a fan translation project after all!

“Unfortunately,” Xvirus continued, “I can only do so much by myself and as like… 90 percent of the dialogue is in Kansai-ben, I’m at a bit of a loss.”

The potential good news here is that by revealing the project’s status as a (troubled) fan effort, we’re now able to put out a call for translators. If you know Game Center CX and have an eye for Kansai dialect, you could be part of something very important.

VERY. IMPORTANT.

Retro Game Challenge 2 title screen video, a follow-up to yesterday’s mysterious clip, in which Evil Arino promised his return and gave our mascot Tiny a shout-out.

This is looking more and more like a ROMhack, what with the old copyright info, but who knows, maybe the U.S. publisher working on this hasn’t localized that part yet?

[Update: Maybe that doesn’t matter! Commentor Hobo points out, “The original RGC title screen was still dated 2007 even though it was released in the US in 2009.”]

Whichever the case, the entity posting these videos has demonstrated an ability to edit both the text and images in Game Center CX, which means shit just got real.

Whoever you are, Youtube user Arino2011, just tell us what you need us to do to make this happen. Much like Brandy, we wanna be down — we wanna be down with you. We wanna be down with what you’re going through.

Arino delivers a mysterious message to “that Tiny guy.” We received a link to this video of Game Center CX 2’s Games Master Arino teasing some kind of return appearance, posted by YouTube user “arino2011,” who currently has only this clip in the account.

I’d love to believe this video is a personal missive to us from XSEED, but I’m more inclined to think it’s a ROMhack — I don’t dare consider that anything as wonderful as an American release of GCCX2 is possible. Still, if you made this, we’d love to hear from you! Either you’re localizing GCCX2 or you’re just messing with the code — and either way that’s pretty cool.

Nice try, Xseed

Perhaps as a response to our posting of exp.’s open letter to Xseed asking the company to bring Game Center CX 2, the Japanese sequel to Retro Game Challenge, to North America, the publisher tweeted this a few days ago:

We give a heartfelt thanks to TinyCartridge for their undying devotion to Retro Game Challenge, but Retro Game Challenge 2 is not up to us. Lots of people seem to love Retro Game Challenge 1, but not many bought it. ;_; Thanks for all the special efforts though.

What a perfect way to trick gamers into believing you’re not going to localize Game Center CX 2, only to turn around next week at E3 to announce that you’re bringing it to the States! That’s what’s going to happen, right? Right, Xseed? That the plan, isn’t it? Right?

What am I talking about? Of course that’s the plan! Great prank, Xseed. Seriously. HAHAHAHAHA.

HG101 examines Game Center CX →

Hardcore Gaming 101, a collection of informative and in-depth video game reviews, posted an excellent article on Retro Game Challenge (a.k.a. Game Center CX) and its Japan-only sequel today. If you read our “favorite tiny cartridges of ‘09” list last week, you’ll remember we ranked RGC as last year’s most cherished release (though with all the praise we’ve given the game, you likely knew we did that even if you didn’t read the piece).

HG101’s Kurt Kalata isn’t as fanboyish about the series as we are, and he brings up more than a few flaws he found with it. I don’t agree with all his complaints — I really enjoyed Rally King, and I actually like that Xseed localized Haguru-man’s title as Haggleman instead of Gear Man. Still, the two-page article has neat breakdowns and screenshots for each of the faux-retro games, and it shares this funny “Game Computer Floppy Drive System” loading screen from the Detective Kacho titles:
