DS/3DS Release Dates & Sales // Tiny Cartridge Stickers For Your Games!

Trailer for Soul of Darkness, another mobile port that hit DSiWare this morning. I’m sure the quality of this release is in line with Gameloft’s other mobile games that migrated to the DS download service, but if you’re in need of a Castlevania clone, at least this one’s only 500 Points.

Also, it has “exclusive camera features”, like the ability to overlay a photo of your face on the hero’s head. … As you’ll see in the video, it looks as dumb as it sounds.

I commented earlie that all of this week’s WiiWare / DSiWare games looked like crap — some disagreed and urged me to check out Pearl Harbor Trilogy – 1941: Red Sun Rising. And there’s a link so you can check it out, too!

Trailer for Legends of Exidia, Gameloft’s 16-bit-esque action RPG for DSiWare. With inspiring promises like “Defeat the most evil creatures” and “Collect the most powerful weapons”, this already looks like one of the most generic titles the mobile game studio has ever put out, but as usual, I have a few reasons for featuring it here:

  • Around 0:45, the hero sneaks into a heavily guarded area by hiding in a barrel, Metal Gear-style
  • At the 1:20 mark, there’s a music/rhythm minigame
  • The boss battle at 1:45 kind of reminds me of God of War’s quick time events

Are those bits enough to convince me to buy this when it releases next month? Probably not! This will be called A Legend of Hexidia in Europe, by the way. It’s unclear why Gameloft is using a different name for the PAL version.

Legends of Exidia, an original action-RPG slated for DSiWare. I was surprised to learn Gameloft is behind this title, as it’s difficult to imagine the French, mobile-focused studio working on something that looks so Eastern. The characters still look hella generic, but I initially said the same about Clash of Heroes, and I ended up loving that.

Though most of Gameloft’s DSiWare releases haven’t interested me so far (I’ve heard the Oregon Trail remake isn’t bad, but it’s lame that the same title is priced $3 cheaper for the iPhone), this at least seems a little curious, mostly because I want to see how the company’s talented 2D artists interpret this JRPG style. Expect to see a trailer for Legends of Exidia later this week, and a release to DSiWare next month.

“When the PSP and DS came out, they seemed so cool. But once you play on the iPod Touch, they don’t stack up anymore!”

Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller on the iPhone and iPod Touch’s superiority over the DS, PSP, and other past handheld gaming consoles.

Space Invaders: Infinity Gene is great and all, but real talk, the game Apple decided to show off shortly after that quote was a touch-controlled Halo clone… from Gameloft. Everyone knows that game is gonna be total Butt City, Population: a butt on your iPhone that you think is a game.

Three awesome-looking Gameloft mobile titles that I want on DSiWare

In its third quarter financial results released yesterday, mobile games company Gameloft mentioned an interest in releasing titles for the Nintendo DSi’s downloadable games shop, which I’m pretty pumped about!

For those of you unfamiliar with Gameloft, the studio develops and publishes a wide variety of mostly mobile games, from casual titles to releases based on popular video game and media licenses.

Though mobile games have a reputation of, well, sucking, Gameloft’s library has several titles that I’d love to see on DSiWare. Keep in mind that I haven’t actually played them, so I’m not sure if they’re any good, hence why I describe them as awesome looking.

1. The Oregon Trail

Don’t even front; this shit looks all the way live. I sent these screens to JC a while back, and he complained, “These graphics are wasted on mobile titles.”

2. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas

I don’t think these screens really represent the bulk of this mobile title’s gameplay, but they remind me of my favorite tactical shooter, Kemco’s Rescue: The Embassy Mission for NES (here’s my experience with the game as a kid).

3. Brothers In Arms: Art of War

And this looks like a more detailed sequel to my favorite WWII game, Medal of Honor: Infiltrator for GBA. This is what all WWII games on the DS should look like!

Unfortunately, I doubt any of these will ever appear on DSiWare. Looking at what Gameloft has ported to the iPhone, N-Gage, and WiiWare, we’ll probably get titles like Block Breaker Deluxe, Midnight Pool, and Diamond Twister instead. At least I got to talk about Rescue: The Embassy Mission and MOH: Infiltrator.
