Before the 3DS Game Card Case… ⊟
We carried our portable games around like this. Or we just left those plastic cartridges loose in our bags. How did you carry yours around?
It’s rad that we can now fit 18 3DS games in a slightly larger space than what we’d need to hold four Game Boy cartridges back in the day. Props to Kombat Kat for the pic.

Yo-kai Watch Jibanyan and Robonyan figures ⊟

Man, I hope I get to play this game. These two characters, depicted here in models by Bandai, are pretty appealing! Well, except for the magazine Jibanyan’s reading…

Anyway, these two retail for just 864 yen each!

Yes, there was a calculator for Game Boy ⊟

Long before iOS apps, or even DS “non-games,” the Infogenius series cornered the then-nonexistent market for productivity software on handheld game consoles. Seen above is Spell Checker and Calculator, but Frommer’s Travel Guide, Spanish Translator, French Translator, and Personal Organizer and Phone Book were also sold in 1991.

The most remarkable InfoGenius cart is the Personal Organizer,” according to a ubiquitous column by Chip and Jonathan Carter (seriously, I’ve found it in like five different newspapers). “Simple Game Boy controls let you store names, addresses and phone numbers. You can keep track of appointments and events with the day planner and find dates through the year 2000 with a calendar.”

Here’s that Cave Story you ordered, Europe ⊟
On May 1, Cave Story will finally arrive on the 3DS eShop, an occasion commemorated by the amazingly Kool artwork above, tweeted by Nicalis.
Personally, I’ll commemorate this announcement by replaying Cave Story, like I do too often. Or not often enough. I’m still not any damn good at Cave Story.

The Game Boy Legacy: A 25th Anniversary Celebration ⊟
Ahead of the Game Boy’s 25th birthday (it debuted in Japan on April 21, 1989), USgamers Jeremy Parish published a magnificent retrospective on the handheld. It’s a great tribute to the underpowered portable and its father Gunpei Yokoi, and I’m not just saying that because JC and I contributed a handful of words to the piece! Go read it here.

Things are happening in these Smash Bros. screens ⊟

Nintendo sent me a 1.1 GB folder of BMP files today. Yes, one point one U.S. gigabytes of bitmap files. That collection of images includes 200+ screens of the new Smash Bros. game. Since Tumblr’s gallery only lets me upload ten at a time, here are the ones I found most amusing from the 3DS version.

Most of them are odd Luigi shots because there are an inordinate amount of these images in the batch. The others are just weird/un images I found. King Dedede looks like he just witnessed something he can’t unsee.

Why does Bike Rider DX2 have Crayon Shin-chan DLC? ⊟

Whatever the reason for a totally unrelated anime/manga character in a bike racing game, it’s pretty cute. The DLC is out now in Japan; still waiting on this eShop game elsewhere – the latest estimate is sometime in May.

Inafune-san concluded that Gunvolt keeps ‘braided hair’ in US version too. Because he emphasises the design.

The Gunvolt Twitter account reveals that one of the main character design changes has been rolled back for the North American release.

Luckily for Gunvolt's dignity and protection, Inti Creates is still covering his bare midriff for localization in the U.S.. Why did he ever have a bare midriff in his armor? Is he just really, really unconcerned about anyone shooting at his stomach? “Who would aim for the stomach,” he thinks, “when I've got this braid to target?”

Whoa, 3D OutRun has two new songs in it ⊟

Not sure why, but M2 went ahead and added new music (and a new car?) to the 3D Classics version of OutRun, coming out April 23 in Japan: “Cruising Line” by Manabu Namiki and “Camino a Mi Amor” by Jane-Evelyn Nisperos.

There’s also… a new car, three different simulated cabinets, four screen modes, totally remappable controls, replay saving (with multi-speed playback), mid-race saving, customizable volume for game audio, engine noise and ambient arcade machine sound…

This is deluxe even for Sega 3D Classics! M2 has OutDone itself.
