Super Metroid’s music, in the style of the Sega Genesis. HG101 rounded up a collection of remade music by Geckoyamori, including the above medley. The change in sound hardware totally lends the familiar Super Metroid music a spookier feel, I think.

I’ve also just realized I need to go replay Super Metroid immediately.

Customized Super Nintendo, Mega Drive, and NES systems by Ozcan. That Blanka piece is wiccckkkkeeddd. If I owned one of those, I would need to further modify it by replacing the console’s startup chime with Blanka’s cheer from Street Fighter II whenever he won a match.

Sega Action Chair.  Spoiler alert: the “Sega action” is leaning. This extremely rare chair is a Genesis controller, with the seat used as a D-pad. You lean in any direction to move the D-pad in that direction, with buttons situated on handles on either side. This would probably be pretty neat for Hang-on or the like, or an insane workout with Gunstar Heroes.

If you’d like to make your own home more Sega Active, one of these is on eBay with a current bid of $300. That’s not bad for… furniture, right?

Dancing panda from Strider (Genesis/Mega Drive). Hidden in an out-of-the-way corner of Strider’s third stage, a small panda waits behind a stack of artillery shells. After you destroy the shells and find the little guy, he does a jig, rotates his head, and disappears.

This silly Easter Egg went unexplained for more than 20 years until LSCM tracked down and interviewed Strider’s designer Kouichi Yotsui recently:

“The graphic staff and planners will sometimes conspire against the planner and put something in without his knowledge. For Strider, someone put a panda in the battleship’s cannon room without my knowing. The person who did that later became [Keiji Inafune]’s wife, fully supporting her husband’s success.”

So, the prankster who coded the dancing panda in Capcom’s Strider went on to marry Mega Man character designer and Onimusha/Resident Evil producer Keiji Inafune!

Alternate Altered Beast boxart by Daniel Vendrell Oduber of Ikari Studio (click for a larger version).

This dreadful game has stained the minds of several artists lately. There was Paul Hornschemeier’s Altered Garfield artwork two days ago, and now this fanmade Mega Drive cover art produced for a tribute collection to the title.

Video game wallpaper hero Mikael “Orioto” Aguirre also recently painted a dim and foggy scene dedicated to the wretched title, which you can download here:

Mega Drive business card holder for $11 →

The Mega Drive business card holder by Banpresto is now on sale at Strapya for $11, with shipments due to go out “towards the end of March.” That’s less than half the last price we saw for the thing, and puts it well into “reasonable” territory.

Which means that it’s also in “selling out quickly” territory.

Sega Genesis “Speed Box” arcade stick prototype. Apparently this garish box uses an optical joystick for “Perfect 360 Controls!” Possibly like the Happ Perfect 360 joystick?

I have no idea what the extra “N” and “S” switch mentioned in the description is for. Eric speculates that it’s a “Nintendon’t” and “Sega Pulls Out Of The Hardware Business” switch. If so, it works perfectly.

And on the other end of the spectrum, there’s this velvet NES mod by Phil McCoy. I’m kind of disappointed that it’s not actually a red velvet NES cake. That’d be delicious.

I’m not sure what compels someone to wrap their console in red velvet, but his Sonic Gold Ring Genesis/Mega Drive system mod is much more sensible:

And his friend Greg made this wicked Battletoads NES:

Mallet Legend controller for Genesis by Realtec. This nine-button controller was designed for the unlicensed game Mallet Legend’s Whac-a-Critter. The game is abundant enough on eBay, but the controller is decidedly not, which is why eBay seller cmskls is charging five hundred damn dollars for this one.

It kind of looks like both the princess and the hero on the box are embarrassed that he’s brought a mallet. “You couldn’t find a sword or something?” Or perhaps that his battle uniform consists of a polo shirt and shorts with a cape thrown on.

The bear is just sleepy.

Reasons To Return To Classic Shadowruns

Though FASA Interactive and Microsoft’s Shadowrun first-person shooter in 2007 was widely regarded as an awful idea, we still have the cyberpunk series’ previous three games to return to and enjoy.

In fact, the SNES, Genesis, and import Sega CD games (each separate experiences from different developers despite sharing identical titles) have all seen recent developments that might convince you to play them again even if you already ran through them a decade ago.

  • The top-down, open world Genesis game has a new conversion mod that revises your starting races, characters, stats, inventories, and more. Programmer Magus77 also made lots of changes to the weapons and text/dialogue, though I haven’t tried it out myself to see if this improves or damages the game. Dragoon Zero’s Races mod is also worth trying, too.
  • Someone unearthed a beta ROM of the European SNES game (I typically don’t like to direct link ROMs, but I’m making an exception since this wasn’t intended for retail release), which someone should investigate. There’s a similar beta ROM for the U.S. edition, and that revealed a few “censored” edits:

  • As for the Japan-only Sega CD game (intro cinematic embedded above), someone put out a call for technical help to create an English patch several months ago. This isn’t the first time someone’s hinted at an upcoming translation for the text-heavy title, but I’m mentioning it anyway because maybe some kind-hearted ROM hacker will read this post and lend their talents to the project.

If it’s not obvious, I love the Shadowrun series and spend too much time following unofficial projects since the PC game killed any chances of future video games. Also, I wish there was a DS emulator that ran Shadowrun SNES without any issues so I could play this on a portable.
