Important indie game things

I’ve let quite a few indie game items pile up, mostly non-Nintendo related stuff, so here’s all of them in one go!

First off, Giant Robot is hosting Game Night 8 at its L.A. location tonight, another collab with Attract Mode, Meat Bun, and other partners. The free event will feature Monaco, the much buzzed about stealth/heist multiplayer game — creator Andy Schatz and producer Andy Nguyen will be attending. Bring your 3DS for mad StreetPasses.

Christine Love has just released Analogue: Hate Story, a futuristic follow-up to Digital: A Love Story, which you may remember me raving quite a bit about. The full version is $15, but you can download a demo to get a taste of this “mystery featuring transhumanism, traditional marriage, loneliness, and cosplay.” Those of you interested in the Love Plus phenomena might appreciate this.

Friend of the site Anna “Auntie Pixelante” Anthropy has a book coming up called Rise of the Videogame Zinesters, in which she writes about “how freaks, normals, amateurs, artists, dreamers, drop-outs, queers, housewives, and people like you are taking back an art form.” Need to finish The Corner and 1Q84 by the time this is out — and half a dozen games — so I can pick it up on my Kindle day-one.

Meat Bun’s new “Cute ‘em Up” t-shirt line, featuring shirts by artists including Mariel Cartwright, Zac Gorman, Paul Robertson, and Ashley Davis, each in multiple color schemes. I’d love to meet the person brave enough to rock that Slime shirt! I know the person brave enough to rock pretty much all the other ones (meeeee).

These shirts are being sold only through Giant Robot (update: for now, anyway.) MB’s Mike McWhertor said they’ll be on the Meat Bun site too, so you’ll be able to choose your web shop.

Game Night 7 features Fez, superHYPERCUBE →

Whoa, you could totally be playing Fez tonight. It’s not impossible! You just have to… be in LA from 7-10 this evening, and attend the Game Night 7 event at the GR2 gallery/store/thing, where it’ll be projected onto a big wall outside.

You’ll also get to check out Polytron’s superHYPERCUBE (a 3D Kinect game about putting cubes into holes), get first dibs on new Meat Bun shirts, and collect hella StreetPasses from all the other people there. Basically, if you want to live my ideal life, you should be at this thing tonight.

Game Night 6 features Mighty Switch Force. As always, Giant Robot’s Game Night event looks super fun, featuring a fully WayForward-themed night. This will be the first public demo of the rad-looking 3DS download game, and you’ll also be able to try the other DSiWare/PlayStation Mini games from the company! By the way, Mighty Switch Force’s 3D trailer is on the U.S. eShop right now.

And while you’re there, you’ll get to see (and probably buy) the new line of Meat Bun shirts. BE THERE September 17 at 7PM. And before that, BE HERE to RSVP.

Game Night 5 at Giant Robot LA tonight →

If you’re in the Los Angeles area and want to get together with like-minded gamers, don’t forget that Giant Robot 2, Attract Mode, and Meatbun, and others are holding their bi-monthly Game Night event tonight, starting at 7PM.

While there, you’ll have an opportunity to play unreleased indie games (projected outdoors and playable in game stations indoors) like Haunted Temple Studios’ Advance Wars-style strategy title Skulls of the Shogun, and Revenge Labs’ fascinating 2D fighter Skullgirls

Though neither of those games are for handhelds, you’ll still want to bring your 3DS, as Giant Robot 2 is taking part in today’s “StreetPass Day” promotion.

Holiday-themed Game Night in LA →

[Update: Due to rain, Game Night 4 has been rescheduled! :o( We’ll let you know the new date — likely early January — when Giant Robot and Attract Mode announce it!]

It’s the most wonderful time of the yeeeeeear (for LA residents). Giant Robot, Attract Mode, and Meat Bun are partnering for another event I don’t get to go to, this time Christmas-themed!

The holiday merriment will come from a special “X-mas edition” of Super Crate Box made for the event, a holiday-music version of 8-Bitar Hero, Merry Gear Solid, and more.

It takes place today, from 7-10PM at GR2 (2062 Sawtelle Blvd, West Los Angeles, CA). If you plan to check it out, RSVP here. Joys be thine, as a certain Tiny Cartridge writer has been known to say!

Photos of Giant Robot’s Famicom-inspired Scion art car. This custom-painted vehicle has been modified to play Return of the Quack — an indie shoot’em up created by Chevy Ray Johnston, Matt Furie, And Nullsleep — by projecting the game from its headlights onto a wall.

Check out the NES-style controllers on the driver’s and passenger’s seats. It looks like there’s a setup to play Famicom games in the trunk, too. It’s all very slick. I love the Moon-style hubcaps by the way — my wife has something similar on her Jetta!

If you’re in Los Angeles and looking for something to do, this car will be at the Pixel Pushers exhibit that kicks off tonight at Scion Installation L.A. The Giant Robot-curated event will also feature work from Jud Buffum, Zach Gage, Daniel Rehn, Kohei Yamashita, and others. You can watch a trailer for Pixel Pushers below:

Game Night 3 at Giant Robot Los Angeles tonight! If you show up, you’ll not only have a chance to buy a tasty meat bun bento box and the MBxGR Ouendan-inspired shirt, but also to play Super Street Fighter IV and Super Meat Boy projected on a wall. So jealous of LA dudes!

You can read more Game Night 3 details here.

“Osu! Giant Robot” shirt by Meat Bun (click for a larger version). All profits from this brilliant Ouendan tribute shirt will go toward supporting Asian American pop culture magazine Giant Robot.

If you’re a fan of Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents — and I’m not sure how you can be reading this site and not be — grab this $24 tee! It’s not like there are many opportunities to buy Ouendan merchandise in the States.

Import: Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! series

Game Night 2 with Bryan Lee O'Malley tomorrow at Giant Robot LA! →

Those of you in or close to the city of angels, make sure to hit up Giant Robot tomorrow evening for Game Night 2, which will feature special guest Bryan Lee O’Malley. He’ll not only sign copies of his comic Scott Pilgrim, but join in on all the gaming fun planned for the night — naturally, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game will be on tap.

According to our friends at video game culture shop Attract Mode, which is helping organize the event, you’ll also be able to snack on burgers, salads, fries, and delicious poutine there. So, make sure to RSVP for that shiz!

Oh, and that image above comes from Jay D Smith, who managed to convince Mr. O’Malley into sketching Ramona’s lost cat Gideon on his Game Boy. Shmowzow!

Giant Robot/Gaijin Games party in LA →

Going to be in LA next week? For once, unlike most of these events, I will actually be around for this one. Giant Robot, Attract Mode, Gaijin Games, and pretty much everyone else cool will be hosting a party themed around the Bit.Trip games (like Runner, reviewed here by me and much better here by Brandon Boyer). They will be projecting the games on the wall of a damn building! Everyone is going to see me fail repeatedly at Runner, from miles away! It’s Monday night from 7:30 to 10:30 at GR2, and you can RSVP here if you’d like.

If you see me there, say hello! I might not be there the whole time, since the life of a gaming journalist affords only enough party time to get pictures and try to set up an interview or two, and not so much “partying.” Also, if I don’t say anything back, don’t take it personally — I’ll have simply reached my limit of human interaction and will be having a quiet panic attack.
