“There are few other classic game reimaginings that do such a great job at modernizing a franchise while still capturing the original’s spirit as well as Shinobi [for 3DS]. It effortlessly plays in the same league as Bionic Commando Rearmed and Contra 4.

While not quite perfect, especially considering the graphics and the botched 3D mode, it’s one of the best games in the series yet. But also viewed simply as an old-school 2D action platformer, Shinobi is quite excellent.”

An excerpt of Hardcoregaming 101’s review of Shinobi for Nintendo 3DS. As with Cave Story 3D, this title suffered intense derision from gamers over its aesthetic leading up to its release — also like Nicalis’ game, now that it’s out, Shinobi is picking up generous reviews. I wonder if the developers at Griptonite are now like, “I told you this shit was gonna be the bomb, didn’t I? Eat it.”

I really hope this isn’t the last handheld action game we see from Griptonite, which brought us gems like Spyro: The Eternal Night (GBA) and the recent Spider-Man DS releases. “Freemium” mobile publisher Glu acquired the studio three months ago, though, and, judging by this posting, Griptonite’s headed in a different direction. :o(

New Shinobi 3DS trailer reveals “special challenge” maps, unlockable via StreetPass or Play Coins.

These extra stages look a bit bland — which I presume was Griptonite’s intention, differentiating them from the more busy environments you’ll see in the story campaign — but at least you can play through them as Joe Musashi, the hero of the original Shinobi games (and the son of this game’s ninja protagonist, Jiro Musashi).

Shinobi’s back!: Full trailer and boxart

The week was full Shinobi scuttlebutt, including info pulled from a LinkedIn profile, a “leaked” but incomplete trailer, and scans from the latest Nintendo Power issue.

We now know that the new Shinobi game will release for 3DS this September, and will be a prequel:

“Shinobi tells the story of Jiro Musashi, the leader of the Oboro clan and father of Joe Musashi, the hero of the first iterations of Shinobi. Players will become a true ninja legend by mastering a brand new combo system switching between melee, ranged and acrobatic attacks. They will also need to rely on Jiro’s ninja magic to get an advantage over their enemies and get out of tight spots.”

We also have the 2.5D title’s full trailer (with gameplay!):

Shinobi 3DS under development at Griptonite

Someone digging around the Linkedin profile for one of Griptonite Games’ environment artists today uncovered that the portable-focused developer is working on a Shinobi game for Nintendo 3DS (as well as at least one other unannounced 3DS title).

NeoGAF is freaking out about Griptonite working on this, but as we covered yesterday, the studio has worked on some quality action games — Spyro: The Eternal Night (2D beat’em up with a rad combo system), the highly regarded Lord of the Rings GBA releases, and the Metroidvania style Spider-Man DS titles, for example.

That’s not to say that every one of the Seattle-based company’s releases has been a hit, as it’s worked on a lot of forgettable tie-in games, but I can’t think of many other developers that I’d want to handle the portable version of an action series like Shinobi.

We don’t have any details or media on Shinobi 3DS yet, but perhaps Sega will reveal some info at E3?

Daniel X: The Ultimate Power trailer. I almost passed over this DS title, skeptical that a licensed game based on a James Patterson book series was worth investing any interest in; the DS adaptation of James Patterson’s Women’s Murder Club didn’t help convince me otherwise.

Something about the combo-heavy combat, however, seemed familiar — it looks just like Spider-Man: Web of Shadows DS, a gem most missed due to its crappier home console counterparts. I bet the Griptonite team behind Web of Shadows DS and the acclaimed Spyro: The Eternal Night GBA edition is now developing Daniel X.

I hope this is also a Metroidvania like Web of Shadows!

Preorder: Daniel X ($29.99, coming January 12, 2010)

I hate iPhone ads, because they inspire a hot wave of jealousy, but this one makes me smile for the split-second flash of Griptonite Games above the actual game in the ad. They’re right there in the app store.

Griptonite, incredible-magic-name-changing aside, is packed with a bunch of awesome, friendly people who’ve always been really cool about working with us. It doesn’t hurt that they’re masters of churning out lemonade from lemons, either, and by lemons, I mean some really worn out licenses.

Apple should have featured one of their games. Not that I’ve played anything on the iPhone, dammit, but I have faith in Griptonite Games.
