Evidently, when Taito was planning its reboots of everything else (Arkanoid, Space Invaders, The Legend of Kage) it also had in mind a refresh of Elevator Action, for which Harvey designed these insane characters.
“At the time,” Harvey told Boing Boing, “the economic proliferation of China was making big headlines, so I looked to things like modern Chinese couture and street fashion to get inspiration for my designs, as well as North Korean military uniforms and hip-hop culture.”
As a result of those influences, he came up with a group of counter-terrorists including a kid in a skeleton costume, a “Muslim radical” in pink pants, and a North Korean woman who shoots lasers from a Zapper connected to a tea kettle full of battery acid.
This is true of all the Taito remakes, but I would so play the hell out of this.
[Thanks, Nathan!]

Poster by Harvey James for Attract Mode (click for a larger version). Each month, the artist will create a poster based on the theme of that month’s Tim Rogers column for Kotaku. A picture that says several thousand words, then.
This first poster, an image featuring the girl from the “Game Girl” shirt (a.k.a. Ashlee Simpson), corresponds to the column “let’s talk about jumping.” I love the design of the little jumping guys! And the fact that a pile of them is building up between the platforms. The poster is available for pre-order for $25.
You can grab wallpaper versions, cut in the middle to fit your screen, from Harvey James’s Livejournal.

tags / attract mode / harvey james / jcAdam Robezzoli’s “videogame culture shop” Attract Mode has launched, offering some amazingly awesome stuff designed by people we love. Above: “Game Girl” shirt by Harvey James, Calamity Annie buttons(!), Family Music by YMCK, and Matthew Hawkins’s rad FORT90ZINE.
Aside from the shirts and stuff, it’s going to be cool to have a shop at which I can pick up YMCK albums! Congrats to Adam for getting the shop up, and I hope to spend money there at my earliest convenience.
