Takahashi Meijin challenged by Sakurada Ichiro in Star Soldier. I’d like to say that the Meijin essentially melts this guy’s face off on the field of Star Soldier, but that’s not exactly the case.

After the competition, there appear to be some bloopers and then a contest in which kids send in cards to win t-shirts, telephone cards, and other items.

Tower of Shadow, Last Window, & Magic Obelisk desktop backgrounds

Three studios put out attractive wallpapers for their games this week, and I’ve collected them here in case you missed them. So, if you’re desperate to find something new to decorate your desktop, here you go!

Hudson released this Tower of Shadow image as a reward for completing a Flash demo of the game’s controls. NeoGAFfer Agnates posted the full wallpaper here, though, so you can grab it without playing the trial.

These other excellent backgrounds come from Cing’s Last Window and Game Arts’s The Magic Obelisk. Download them in your size of choice by clicking the images:

New Tower of Shadow trailer. Several months have passed since we last posted anything substantial about this Peter Pan-ish puzzle platformer, and Hudson is now far enough into development to show off more of the Wii game, including a villain of some sort!

“In the case of Bonk, everything has personality, from the main character to the enemies to the levels themselves. Our adorable, big-eyed caveman hero climbs walls with his teeth, waggles his tiny arms and legs comically while swimming up waterfalls, pops a head vein when doing his trademark move (a ‘bonk,’ in case you were wondering), and transforms into one of two comically monstrous forms to clash with his usually cutesy demeanor.

His iconic enemies — which, in case you couldn’t tell, are freshly-hatched dinosaurs who didn’t bother losing the whole shell — nap, catch butterflies, fish, climb poles in little alpine hats, suntan, and evoke the sense that they’re ‘living’ in a level, rather than placed arbitrarily by some programmer.”

Bob Mackey argues the merits of the Bonk series. If you want to try a Bonk game (and you should, they’re adorable), you can download all three of the Turbografx-16 games, and the futuristic cute-em-up spinoff Air Zonk, on the Wii Virtual Console, or you can set up a Japanese PSN account and download the Bonk games to your PSP or PS3.

Or, if you want to go all out, you can buy a Turbo Duo on eBay, which has the added bonus of being absolutely gorgeous.

“Star Soldier - Soul of the 16 Shot” by Takahashi Meijin and IOSYS. This wondrous music video comes from Takahashi Meijin Legend: Soul of the 16-Shot, an upcoming album remixing songs from classic Hudson titles like Lode Runner, Challenger, and Milon’s Secret Castle.

It’s an interesting concept by itself, but each track also features the Hudson mascot and watermelon terrorizer singing mostly new lyrics over the remixes! Brilliant, right? A Bomberman video like the Star Soldier one above is slated to appear online soon, too. The album is expected to release on January 27th.

“As far as the skateboarding, believe it or not, there was a company-wide policy that banned skateboarding, because for me, my livelihood depended on my arm, so they wanted to make sure they kept me from doing anything risky that could involve falling and damaging my hand — but it was for the safety of the programmers’ hands, too. And everybody else at the company, well, if one person suffered, we all had to suffer.”

Takahashi Meijin, telling 1UP’s Ray Barnholt one of the ways in which he was unable to emulate his Adventure Island namesake.

The interview, a year after the last Meijin/Barnholt summit, is full of great info, like the price of Meijin’s mid-’80s fame, and his favorite Hudson games.

“Runner,” a mellow song by Takahashi Meijin (!) This song is the theme to Running Boy: Star Soldier no Himitsu, a 49-minute anime movie also featuring Takahashi Meijin.

Intro to Honey the Bug (Bug-tte Honey), a 1986-87 anime based on Adventure Island, and featuring a character based on Takahashi Meijin. Apparently it was localized… somewhere… as Honey Bee in Toycomland.

According to TMS’s description, the show follows Honey Bee and three real-world game masters as they attempt to rescue “Genjin (Caveman) Takahashi” from Kyura-the-Great.

This show was evidently popular enough to be spun off into its own Famicom game, also called Bug-tte Honey. It’s pretty much unrecognizable as bearing any relation to Adventure Island:

Hand graphic selection screen from Hudson’s World RPS, an online rock-paper-scissors game released on September 30. Am I considering paying 99 cents for a rock-paper-scissors game for iPhone?

Look at that “Cat” set and tell me you aren’t.

Bomberman DSiWare has online battles

After all my predictions that Hudson would exclude online matches from Bomberman DSiWare and implement the feature in later releases (as was the case with the first Bomberman Wii and DS games), the publisher revealed that the downloadable title has online battles.

Hudson says Bomberman Blitz, or Bomberman Anywhere as its known in Japan, has eight-player battles and Nintendo WiFi Connection support, though it’s unclear if online games will accommodate a group of eight, or whether that number is restricted to local matches.

The company also hasn’t revealed any new features — or any pets, unfortunately — but mentions ten locations, map/item preferences, handicap options, and classic power-ups. Don’t expect the game to demonstrate where Hudson hopes to take the franchise, as it looks like a bite-sized, by-the-numbers Bomberman.

Then again, you could argue that “by-the-numbers” (and minigames) is exactly how Hudson has approached the series for the past decade and a half.

Bomberman as a Laputa: Castle in the Sky robot, by Sakkan (click the image for a larger version).

This tribute to Miyazaki and Hudson introduces the first story in a busy list of Japanese DSiWare news — Itsudemo Bomberman, or Bomberman Anytime, will hit Japan’s DSiWare service this October for 500 Nintendo points, according to Famitsu. Hudson hinted this new edition a month ago, so everyone saw it coming. The real mystery is will it have dinosaurs and/or kangaroos?

Just two weeks after Ketsui DS developer Arika released a new bullet hell game for DSiWare, Genterprise has revealed two shoot’em ups for its budget (200 points) G.G. series: Z.ONE, a horizontal-scrolling SHMUP featuring a Pod that fires in eight directions; and Wonder Land, a vertical-scroller themed after Alice in Wonderland.

Those two will hit Japan next week, as will Saikyoo Silver Star Go from Silver Star Japan (essentially Go), and a very strange card/board game from Nintendo titled Asoberu Ehon Mind Ten, both priced at 500 points.

Finally, Dragon Quest Wars appeared on the ESRB site, indicating a U.S. release for the simple strategy game.

Artwork from “Factory and Fantasy”, Wowlab’s interactive video installation from the Miyagi Museum of Art’s (Sendai, Japan) Occur2009 event held last March.

This isn’t related to the DS or Wii, but I like the art, and the silhouetted Peter Pan-esque scene reminds me of Lost in Shadow (formerly Tower of Shadow), so I’m posting it here. Deal with it. Here’s a video of visitors at the museum playing with the installation:
