Here’s Sherlock Holmes in the Great Ace Attorney ⊟

The little girl is Capcom’s version of Watson, a pink-haired 8 year old. Don’t underestimate her, though — Iris Watson is a genius with a medical Ph.D., and the author of novel series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

The 3DS game is set to release in Japan next spring. Thanks to Kotaku for posting these scans and details from the latest issue of Famitsu.

Special visual materials: Persona Q art book ⊟

Atlus and Famitsu have put out a “cool, sharp, superior, and ultimate guide book” in Japan with some 250 pages of concept art, sketches, illustrations, staff interviews, storyboards, and more, according to DualShockers. Published overseas today by Kadokawa / Enterbrain, the book retails for ¥2,052 / $19.

It’s not for sale at any import sites yet as far as I can tell, but Amazon has a huge variety of Persona Q straps, stickers, mini towels, and decals if you’re into that stuff. Of course, the retailer also has copies of the game, along with its limited edition set.

Sherlock Holmes [may be] in the Great Ace Attorney ⊟
[Update: I should point out, of course, that we’re not 100% sure the Famitsu leak is accurate; we’ll find out when we see scans or when Capcom announces this on the 11th. The silhouette above is official but the characters are still unnamed.]
With a version of Watson, called Iris, who is a) eight years old and b) still a doctor. You keep doing you, Ace Attorney. The news comes from a Famitsu leak (thx Gematsu) and teased by silhouettes on the official website.
I’m just coming off Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, and I’m definitely jazzed about an 1800s version of English Detective and Clueless Lawyer. Although by definition Sherlock Holmes isn’t as much of a gentleman as the Professor. A new “Joint Reasoning” system allows players to decode mysteries by identifying when Holmes goes too far in his reasoning (something like “to the other side of the truth”).
The downside of this is that Tumblr’s going to learn there is more than one interpretation of Sherlock Holmes.

New 3DS and Cover Plates packaging ⊟

I love that New 3DS box for Japan! It’s curious that of all the system’s new features and improvements (extra analog input and buttons, built-in NFC/Amiibo support, faster CPU, etc.), the box’s design and word balloon are dedicated to advertising the handheld’s swappable cover plates. The boxes for the New 3DS XLs, which don’t let you change the covers, are more boring traditional.

Also notice that the packaging for the cover plates (now listed at Amazon Japan) has text for other languages, indicating these will eventually come to the West. Thanks to @Lite_Agent and @NintendoTweet for the pics!

Of course the New 3DS is region locked ⊟
Contrary to rumors that people believed for some reason, the New 3DS and XL will be region locked (according to GameSpot), meaning you won’t be able to play games imported from one region on a console from another region. That’s been the case with every handheld Nintendo has put out since the DSi, so I’m not sure why people would think the company changed its mind suddenly.
It’s awful, and we hate it, but at least there’s hope that the 3DS Homebrew Channel will pave the way for a workaround that will transform new and old 3DSes into region-free portables. Credit to yousefN for the Kirby sketch.

PoPoLoCrois and “Harvest Moon" 3DS crossover ⊟

Marvelous has announced a new 3DS project that brings together fantasy SRPG franchise PoPoLoCrois with the Bokujou Monogatari series (formerly known as Harvest Moon in the West, now going by Story of Seasons).

I don’t know anything about PoPoLoCrois or the manga series it’s based on, but one of these games finally released to North America and Europe on PSP back in 2006. The latest Famitsu issue says the 3DS game will feature PoPoLoCrois' command-driven battles and hero Prince Pietro, while also offering the farming and sim elements you'd expect to find in Bokujou Monogatari, according to Duckroll. Metal Slime PlayStation 4 ⊟

Sony is putting out a limited edition Metal Slime PlayStation 4 in Japan, and even though there is nothing tiny or cartridge-y about this news, it is going on the site because we are talking about a Metal Slime console here.

The console will release with Dragon Quest Heroes, a Dynasty Warriors-style collab between Square Enix and Koei Tecmo, similar to Nintendo’s project with the latter company to release Hyrule Warriors for Wii U. Hitting Japan next year, this seems like the first Dragon Quest to hit a Sony console for some time now!

Maybe the game being on a Sony system will increase its chances of coming out to the West, because it’s not looking like we’ll ever get Dragon Quest 3DS or the other Nintendo-platform titles. Images via Inside Games.

Square Enix doesn’t sound confident about bringing Dragon Quest VII 3DS to the West :o( ⊟
So what’s the deal with Square Enix not localizing any of its Dragon Quest games for the 3DS released in Japan? You’d think the publisher would localize the DQVII remake for the 3DS at least, right? Siliconera caught up with Dragon Quest mobile producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto to see if there’s any chance we’ll get that one, but he offered the following response:

“In terms of DQVII, it has a lot of text to go through and translate, and we’ve received so many requests and so much positive feedback about the game, but unfortunately, we have to consider the cost and the manpower needed to handle the sheer load of text. In terms of scenario and script, the game is probably one of the largest in the DQ franchise. If a lot of people can buy it and support it… well, we can’t promise anything.
… We’ve gotten a lot of requests, we really want to do it, but right now, we need to hammer out what kind of resources we’d need to do it. We say this a lot, but, we can’t seem to get to the point where it’s justifiable.”

In absolutely unrelated news, Square Enix will release the original Dragon Quest, as well as subsequent games (II and III have been mentioned), with a new localization to smartphones starting this September. I can’t be too bitter since those older titles have a lot less text to translate, but you’d be amazed how bitter I still manage to be regardless. Image is via F Yeah Dragon Quest!

Preorders for New 3DS and XL are open ⊟
If you want a New 3DS early and can’t wait until 2015 for it to release in the West, Play-Asia will ship one to you when the portable releases in October. While it’s likely the hardware will be region-locked again, there’s a possibility the upcoming (but delayed) 3DS Homebrew Channel will eventually fix that.
New Nintendo 3DS (White) - $199.99
New Nintendo 3DS (Black) - $199.99
New Nintendo 3DS LL/XL (Metallic Blue) - $219.99
New Nintendo 3DS LL/XL (White - Metallic Black?) - $219.99
Note that the last listing is for a White 3DS XL, which doesn’t actually exist — it’s probably for the Metallic Black edition. Also, all these prices are before the $15-30 shipping/handling fees. Play-Asia will throw in one of its free branded 3DS cases with each order, too. We will let you know when the custom faceplates and docks are for up for preorder too!

Five more random things about the New 3DS ⊟

We’ve covered the basics about the New 3DS\XL hardware and today’s related software announcements, but here are a few minor items about the portable, mostly gleaned from the Nintendo’s Japanese FAQ. It’s just random things to think about, s we wait for the handheld to release in the West next year.

  1. No more wireless switch on the New 3DS - you’ll need to turn the wireless function on and off through the Home menu.
  2. Speaking of wireless, you can now transfer media files to your PC without needing to pull out the microSD card. Unfortunately, this feature is supported by only Windows 8.1 and 7 systems, and not Macs. :o/
  3. To disable the built-in web browser’s parental control filter, users will need to register a valid credit card and pay a fee of ¥30 yen ($0.29), according to Kotaku.
  4. But thanks to its HTML5 support, the New 3DS’s browser can now play videos — I expect 3DS traffic to PornHub to spike!
  5. You’ll be able to play most DS games on the New 3DS, except for ones with odd cartridges or casing, like these three releases that Japanese 3DS pointed out.

Also, I said it earlier, but I’ll mention it again: it’s really cute that the colored lines for the Amiibo logo are the same as the ones on the *New* 3DS logo. The GIFs are via Xavier.

Xenoblade leads the way in splitting 3DS userbase ⊟

Along with debuting new hardware this morning (special edition new 3DS XLs for Smash Bros. and Monster Hunter 4G for Japan also snuck out), Nintendo announced a 3DS port for acclaimed Wii RPG Xenoblade.

Xenoblade is the first announced title (for Japan) that will take advantage of the new 3DS models’ improved CPU — meaning it won’t be playable on the older 3DS, 3DS XL, or 2DS systems. The situation is similar to the DSi, which received DSi-only games that older DSes couldn’t run. I remember quite a bit of confusion and anger over how that was handled..

I’m all for games that take advantage of increased capabilities in what’s effectively a new system, but not everyone’s happy to see the 3DS userbase split. Frequent contributor Daniel Feit justified his annoyance by pointing out that handheld lifespans are getting shorter: “Game Boy to Game Boy Color: 9 years. Nintendo DS to DSi: 4 years. Nintendo 3DS to *new* 3DS: 3.5 years.”

Oh, and Nintendo formally announced that Xenoblade’s hero Shulk is a playable fighter for the new Smash Bros.

The 3DS just got a lot more customizable ⊟

Nintendo really gave the 3DS a facelift! The new standard models (not the XL editions unfortunately) coming to Japan will allow users to swap out its bottom and top covers with various designs, making it so they don’t have to buy limited edition hardware or apply decals just to get a new look for your system. You can see all the designs announced so far here.

Not only that, Nintendo announced new Home menu themes (e.g Animal Crossing, Zelda, Mario) with special backgrounds, icons, folders, music, and sound effects are coming next month with a system update — this will be for all 3DSes and 2DSes, presumably including the new hardware!
