Ten 3DS things you might have missed from today’s Nintendo Directs ⊟
Especially if you only watched the North American presentation, and you didn’t follow-up on all the stuff announced/revealed after the streams ended.
1. There’s a Yoshi 3DS XL system (no game included) coming out in Europe on March 14. As you can see, they did not go for our idea of making the system look like an egg, and the stylus like Yoshi’s tongue.
2. And Monster Hunter 4 will get yet another special edition Nintendo 3DS XL (based on Rajang) in Japan on March 27.
Screenshots allowed for Forbidden Magna ⊟
We’ve established that this 3DS game from the old Rune Factory team doesn’t center around off-limits magma or manga or mango or Magneto. No, much like Rune Factory and Harvest Moon had you running farms (and Hometown Story a shop), Forbidden Magenta puts you in charge of an inn on an island.
You’ll have help from female spirits with running the inn, who wear maid outfits and are presented in chibi-form in the game. You’ll be able to take those spirits into battles (not sure why innkeepers need to go into battle), where you can move them around with a Valkryia Chronicles-esque “Connect Lead Time” free movement system.
Publisher Marvelous AQL will release Forbidden Magnifying Glass in Japan some time this year. Screenshots here are courtesy of Famitsu.
Rune Factory team’s new game is Forbidden Magna ⊟
Marvelous AQL is keeping (unspecified) Rune Factory devs on staff after the collapse of Neverland. Their new game, revealed in this teensy Famitsu preview image, is Forbidden Magna for 3DS. Not Magma, which is what I keep wanting to type.
It’s a “simulation RPG” starring a guy named Lux who “encounters a spirit, prompting his pursuit to discover the truth of the world,” as Gematsu summarizes.
Yeah, it’s not more Rune Factory, but who knows? Maybe it’ll have romance, and/or yams.

Pretend animals are talking while you play Harvest Moon ⊟
That’s the messaging behind these Japanese ads for the new 3DS game, Harvest Moon: Connect to a New Land, and I couldn’t approve more. I want to play a game that lets me go hang out on a farm and stare at angora rabbits! I just want to stare at angora rabbits I guess.
Two more after the break!
Will you be my valentine, Chocolate Golem? ⊟
I NEED to have this guy in my life. It’s the latest concoction from Luida’s Bar, the Dragon Quest-themed cafe in Tokyo. This mix of chocolate and opera cake will join the dessert menu for the next month, in honor of Valentine’s Day and the Japanese release of Dragon Quest Monsters 2 for 3DS.
From now on, when people ask what my favorite kind of food is, I won’t answer with something boring like Chinese food or French cuisine. With a glint in my eye, I’ll tell them my favorite is Dragon Quest monster food, yes, meals that have been fashioned to look like monsters from Dragon Quest, right before I float away into the sky, leaving this limited world to search for something more in the cosmos. … Yeah, that’s what I’ll tell them.
Since I brought up Dragon Quest, I have to point you to my second-favorite new Tumblr, Pixel Digest. It’s a blog about neat sprites, backgrounds, animations, and tricks with pixels in games, and I love it. The latest entry shares a clever trick TOSE employed in Dragon Quest III for the Game Boy Color to make the game look far better than it should have despite the system’s limitations.
Senran Kagura 2 bonus figures, soundtracks ⊟
So cute, so safe for work! People who pick up the DX Pack will get this set of five figures depicting the shinobi of the Hebijo school, while this amazing cross-series four-CD set goes to early purchasers.
Senran Kagura 2 comes out August 7 in Japan.

In case you forgot about Dragon Quest Monsters 2 ⊟
Here’s a GIF to remind you the 3DS remake (and its limited edition XL bundle — here’s an unboxing) released in Japan this week. The image comes from Kimimi, who posted a video showing the first half hour of her playthrough with the import at Nintendo Life.
So, again, that makes four Dragon Quest games for 3DS that have released in Japan and nowhere else. Now that Bravely Default is out in North America today, maybe we’ll hear about other plans Square Enix and Nintendo have for this side of the Pacific soon. Might as well put those trademarks to use!
Special edition Theatrhythm: Curtain Call 3DS XL ⊟
Oh, that is nice. This is part of a limited edition bundle that will release with the game in Japan on April 24. Still no plans for a Western release announced, though a trademark filing for the game did pop up in Europe.
Whoa, check out Karous: The Beast of Re:Eden ⊟
For some reason I hadn’t really looked into Klon’s sequel to the Milestone shooter Karous, and I should have! This looks cool! I didn’t expect the perspective shift from top-down to whatever you want to call this, but of course it makes sense with 3D.
To make it more handheld-friendly, Re:Eden has over 100 brief missions instead of a series of levels like most shooters. It also has customizable ships.
This hit Japan a couple weeks ago. The first Karous game was localized as part of the Milestone Shooting Collection by UFO Interactive, so there’s… a chance. But please, whoever picks it up: don’t feel like you have to use the “Karous” name. It still makes me cringe to see the word karasu (“crow/raven”) transliterated as the nonsense word “karous.”

The Firemen 2 brings the vintage heat ⊟
The Firemen 2: Pete and Danny, part of MonkeyPaw’s Retro Rush of PSOne Imports releases, caught my attention by being called The Firemen 2: Pete and Danny. But as I’ve been playing it, I’m even more surprised to find out that The Firemen 2 is really fun!
Like, imagine a 16-bit Zelda game, but instead of like Octoroks and Darknuts and whatnot, all the enemies are “a fire.”
A-Train 3D looks so nice and square ⊟
The look of A-Train 3D is so appealing to me! It’s sorta cheap and low-poly, but at the same time everything is so square, and all the cityscapes are aligned on such perfect grids. It’s just so… orderly.
A-Train 3D comes out Feb. 13 in Japan, and… I’d sure enjoy playing in English sometime.

Yukiko Amagi in Persona Q ⊟
Another pair of videos for Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth! Don’t really have the time or energy to GIF this one up like last time — feeling hella under the weather right now — but here’s the other vid of Persona 3's Shinjiro Aragaki.
