Dreamcast VMU modded to fit an iPod Nano inside. It doesn’t look like you can use the device’s buttons to control playback, but it’s still a neat way to repurpose an extra Visual Memory Unit you have lying around.

And of course, it slips into a Dreamcast controller, allowing you to listen to all of Britney Spears’ greatest hits the next time you’re playing Shenmue or Chu Chu Rocket:

Extremely limited-edition Samba de Amigo iPod nano. One of these was given to everyone who purchased the Wii Samba game.

Actually, the Colorware-customized music player was a contest prize. And, actually, Samba sold about half a million (according to VGChartz), which isn’t that bad, but I didn’t want anything to stand between me and that joke.

Apparently, the device is preloaded with Samba de Amigo music and videos, but nobody is ever going to open this one, so we’ll never know!

Gadget Orchestra by Jetdaisuke.

Similar to the iPhone and DS band video that caught on earlier this year, this performance combines a variety of portable devices, applications, and music tools:

  • Korg Kaossilator Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer
  • iPod Touch with Mokugyo (JP only)
  • iPhone with Bloom
  • Nintendo DS Lite with Electroplankton
  • Nintendo DSi with KORG DS-10
  • Belkin Rockstar

How frickin’ boss is this setup? Totally frickin’ boss. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should also check out Jetdaisuke’s Straw TalkBox with DSi demonstration!

“There are already so many games [for the iPhone and iPod Touch], and as we look at it, to us, it really seems this is the future of gameplay. Whereas a lot of these devices [Nintendo DS and Sony PSP] are more in the past.

The computer power and the 3D graphic power here is significantly greater than what you have here [picks up DS]. So, this allows people to do significantly higher quality games.”

— Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPod and iPhone Product Marketing, discussing the always effective strategy of competing against Nintendo’s handhelds with higher processing power.

Doing a little Flickr-crawling tonight while avoiding all the things I should be working on, and this caught my eye. Such iconic images: the persevering charm of the NES gamepad and the iPod, side by side, completely different, and yet together serving as bookends for a generation. Best photo ever? No, but it does pack a punch.
