Polar Star shirt, one of several Cave Story tee designs by James “Harvey James” Harvey eventually rejected by the game’s creator Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya (click for a larger version). The text behind this weapon is taken from the game’s programming, the “hard-to-find part in the game where the Hermit Gunsmith gives a monologue which sounds like the words could be Pixel’s own.”

Harvey, who designed the awesome “Game Girl” shirt in my closet, posted four pieces he created for Attract Mode’s run of Cave Story tees, all of which Pixel unfortunately didn’t feel were charming enough. The artist also shared complaints from working with Nicalis on the project, mainly the lack of communication on the developer’s part.

Pixel approved an as-yet unrevealed design by Mitch Ansara, but Harvey says Attract Mode is waiting for Nicalis to finalize some issues to make it all kosher.

I’m really bummed I don’t get to wear a Polar Star tee.

“Seven Force Kaede” by James Harvey, named after the Alien Soldier boss. Not sure what this piece or any of the other similarly-named works appearing on the artist’s LiveJournal have to do with Treasure properties, but I’m also not that worried. I get to post neat art, and then I get to embed a clip from Alien Soldier — two things that make me happy.

Alien Soldier is really brilliant. It deserves more attention and tenuously related artwork than it gets!

Harvey also drew the artwork for, Mighty Jill Off, an indie platformer from Anna “Auntie Pixelante” Anthropy that JC clued me into a few months ago. It’s pretty fun!
