Here’s the first screen of the Kunio RPG ⊟
Well, it’s Kunio hitting a bunch of dudes, except Kunio has HP and MP! And the dudes are orcs or something?
I think I love this. I was wondering how Arc System Works/Million would adapt the Kunio style to a fantasy RPG for Nekketsu Mahou Monogatori (Hot-blood Magic Tale), and the answer appears to be “not at all.” Even the genre listed on the official site, “Nekketsu 2D Action” suggests that this is the familiar gameplay in a new wrapper.
Kunios gonna Kunio.

I’m down to Smash some Cat Heroes ⊟

This new 3DS eShop game by Tom Create looks kinda dumb, but in the best way. Smash Cat Heroes is like a Dynasty/Samurai Warriors game, but 2D and starring cat versions of sengoku-era warriors. So basically hammering on the B button unleashes huge combos against cat enemies! And special moves that go “shoosh” and “argh!”

This will be out April 17, for $4. And speaking of small games on eShop, there’s  a sale on G-Style games starting April 12, and I recommend checking out Crazy Construction. There’s a demo!

Boxart battle: Tomodachi Life US vs. EU ⊟

I’d love to know the specific strategies that led Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Europe to create such different executions of similar ideas for their Tomodachi Life boxes.

The European version looks mostly similar to the Japanese boxart, right down to the placement of most of the characters. You may notice that some of the Japanese Miis have been replaced, though (look at the kneeling “No, I really love you” dude)!

I really like the logo on the US version!

Atlus picks up Citizens of Earth for 3DS, Vita (and more) ⊟

Former Kickstarter project Citizens of Earth is now being published by Atlus for 3DS, Wii U, Vita, PS4, and PC. It’s an Earthbound/Mother-esque RPG starring the Vice President of the United States, and has a pretty fun gimmick:

In Citizens of Earth, the new RPG from ATLUS and Eden Industries, help comes in the form of 40 recruitable citizens, each with unique abilities. Everyone can lend a hand — from the way-too-jittery Barista and the ever-optimistic Weatherlady to the notoriously skeezy Car Salesman.

The company is even holding a contest to create your own citizen/combatant.

Namco items in Super Smash Bros. ⊟

It makes sense that some Namco representation would show up in the new Smash Bros. game, which Bandai Namco is co-developing (even though Game Arts didn’t get any nods in Brawl…)

Some previously unseen items have shown up in a giant set of screenshots Nintendo quietly released yesterday, including Galaga enemies that capture fighters, and… the “Special” flag from Rally-X?

Wait, does somebody like Rally-X? That much?

I’ve also included a couple screens of the Animal Crossing-based beehive item, because hahahahaha that’s awesome.

Greninja’s big splash ⊟

B-because it’s like a big splash page and Greninja is a water type and I’m sorry.

Anyway, this new art by Pokemon artist Ken Sugimori was added to the official Smash Bros. site after the character’s announcement (answering Eric’s heart’s wish). It looks pretty great, except Peach just looks kind of irritated.

Wish I Were You (feat. Akira Yamaoka)

Jim Guthrie • In Flux

Let me start with a full disclosure: Brave Wave Productions is a Yamauchi level supporter of our Club Tiny Patreon. That’s not why I’m linking to this track, not exactly, but I wanted to be open about the relationship so you don’t think I’m trying to sneak some advertising in here.

Basically, it was only after Brave Wave pledged to our drive that I realized I could afford to check out their new album In Flux, which I’d wanted to do since its release last month. I listened to it yesterday, and it is so, so cool!

The standout track after my first listen is “Wish I Were You,” a collaboration between Sworcery composer Jim Guthrie and Silent Hill/Shadows of the Damned composer and guitar wizard Akira Yamaoka. I’ve embedded it here, and I’m just going to listen to it again.

Spelunker cartridge cosplay ⊟

Okay, so it’s just a t-shirt with the Famicom cartridge design on it. This is just one of the designs on Japanese site Dune, and I want all of them. But mostly this one.

At this point I think I should remind you that Spelunker HD is amazing, much better than the original. It’s, perhaps, the hidden gem on the PlayStation 3’s PSN. Via miki800, of course.

Incredible Ghost Trick music video ⊟

Wow! This music video by sue composites pretty much every Ghost Trick character into a series of vignettes, united by Inspector Cabanela’s smoothest moves. I just, just replayed Ghost Trick over the holidays, and loved it again, and now I want to re-replay it. What a game that is. And yeah, there’s a lot of dancing in it. Credit to Hatsuu for the link!

The Animal Crossing: New Leaf birthday party ⊟

Look at the birthday party My Paper Crane’s Heidi Kenney threw for her 11-year-old. The Tom Nook pinata. The bell-bag invites. The villager cookies, made from 3D-printed cookie cutters.

The presents on balloons at the table (with a Spoonflower-printed Animal Crossing tablecloth).

Every detail of this is perfect, except for the part where I’m not the birthday boy. Do you think Animal Crossing will still be in style in 10 years, when it’s time for my girls’ 11th?

Pay what you want for SCROLL’s full catalog (plus other stuff!) ⊟
Wow, this Story Bundle is entirely bananas: a pay-what-you-want bundle with the full collection of Ray Barnholt’s SCROLL Magazine, along with a bunch of other cool books I totally wouldn’t mind reading.
You can specify how much goes to the authors and how much goes to StoryBundle (with charity options as well) so your purchase does support the authors.
This is a good chance to give Ray some support for all the hard work he does, or, if you’re perpetually strapped, to check out SCROLL and some other reading material on the cheap.
Also, yeah, I’m quoted on the page about SCROLL. I guess I really like it.

Flying Hamster 2 takes inspiration from Wonder Boy ⊟

Looking for all intents and purposes like a modern sequel to Wonder Boy 3, Flying Hamster 2 is up on Kickstarter. And it looks beautiful.

The original game was a side-scrolling shooter, but for this one, developer Game Atelier says, “Our main inspirations are the Wonder Boy / Monster WorldZelda series and Secret Of Mana.”

The main Kickstarter goal is a Windows version, but stretch goals could bring it to PS4, Xbox One, Vita, 3DS, and Wii U. I believe that, too, as Flying Hamster was ported all over the place!
