Multiplayer, buggy power up Kaiju Busters

I was totally pumped about Kaiju Busters when Namco Bandai hyped the game last year — a Monster Hunter clone that let you played as Ultraman’s tie-wearing Science Patrol officers? And you get to shoot giant kaiju monsters in the bozack? Sign me up for that shit, post haste.

But then impressions emerging prior to its release indicated the game was “more like Kaiju Buttsters (amirite?)”, so I pushed the 3D title out of my mind and ignored the sequel Namco Bandai announced a few months ago.

Kaiju Busters Powered, though, has won my attention back with a few key changes: the ability to play through story missions with other players, an armor crafting system using corpses of monsters you’ve felled, and a hover buggy that carries three players (driver and two gunners):

A critical shot in Kaiju Busters! Whether or not the rumors are true about this Monster Hunters clone playing like butt, two things are certain:

  1. Playing as a tie-wearing officer from Ultraman’s Science Patrol is awesome
  2. You can shoot giant monsters in the bozack

Comparing this to Phantasy Star Zero, one thing I like about Kaiju Busters — and this is based solely on the above demo footage and on my experience with PS0’s Hunters — is the ranged/gun class seems more exciting with its scope view and direct control of shots.

I found the Hunter’s combat routine in PS0 monotonous, a series of “attack, attack, heavy attack” combos that stayed just as boring 15 hours into the game as it was in my first mission. I complained about the invariability to JC, and he said he found the predictability “relaxing”. Perhaps I’m playing PS0 wrong? Or maybe I shouldn’t have rolled created a Hunter? I probably would enjoy the game more if I could shoot a dragon in its coinpurse.

I heard Kaiju Busters is butt

I was ecstatic when I learned about Namco Bandai’s Kaiju Busters, a Monster Hunter clone for DS featuring famous Japanese monsters like Gomora. When I discovered you played as an officer from Ultraman’s Science Patrol, my eyes widened and my bowtie spun at a speed that lifted me off my chair several inches.

Unfortunately, one of my informants on the street — yes, I’m kind of old school, relying on small-time dealers and other shady characters for my import gaming news instead of just trawling message boards — recently whispered in my ear that he tried out Kaiju Busters at the recent Tokyo Game Show and found it disappointing.

I grabbed him by the collar and threw him up against the wall, threatening to send him up north if he was jivin’ me. He swore up and down the intel was good, and said the controls were unsatisfactory and the monsters teleported around the screen in a way that didn’t seem intentional.

I tried to convince myself that he must have played an early, buggy build at TGS, but when I closed my eyes and tried to sleep later that night, I couldn’t forget the words he used to describe the game: Kaiju Buttsters.

The Kaiju Busters team on a monster hunting expedition.

I ignored Kaiju Busters when Namco Bandai announced the game in July, dismissing it as yet another Monster Hunter clone from Japan, which it totally is. The cooperative multiplayer with varied classes, 500+ weapons to collect, and 300+ missions are nice, but several other titles share the same bullet list of features.

Closer inspection, though, identified two essential details:

  1. Many of the monsters you take down are famous kaiju like Ultraman’s Red King and Gomora.
  2. You play as an officer from Ultraman’s Science Patrol, tie and all! How frickin’ rad is that?

The proposition of playing as a dude in a tie teaming up with other tie-wearing dudes and trying to take down a skyscraper-sized beast fulfills a fantasy I never knew I had. Yes, Earth Defense Force 2017 had a similar premise but no ties! Here’s a trailer I should’ve posted months ago:
