Kid Icarus: Uprising prototype footage. This clip from a pre-production version of the game, shown in an Iwata Asks, reveals a shockingly clear vision for what the game would become. I mean, sure, Pit moves in the final game, and there’s stuff to shoot, but this is almost shot for shot Chapter 1’s air battle. Here’s a prototype land battle.
That English Iwata Asks interview has been stealthily updated since release, as well. There’s a lot of really interesting stuff about Masahiro Sakurai’s design style, his influences, his ideas for writing the script (which he apparently did on his own) and even a little bit about how the AR cards work.

Kid Icarus: Uprising weapon guide, from Nintendo of Europe. This isn’t comprehensive, but gives you an idea of what the different weapon types are about, with noteworthy examples of each.
Light vs. Dark mode is getting much more exciting now that a) other people actually have Kid Icarus: Uprising and b) those people are unlocking cool weapons. My competitive advantage from practice and powerful weapons is rapidly diminishing!

Nintendo of America hasn’t said anything about releasing 3D Classics: Kid Icarus as anything but a pre-order bonus for Uprising, but GameStop provides evidence that a standalone release is coming.
The retailer has listed the download with a $6 price tag. You can’t currently order it (there’s a confusing pairing of “Not Available” and “Available Now” messages), but the existence of the listing suggests that it’ll be available at some point. Good news for people who waited until after, say, after my review to check it out! Or for people who waited until after writing my review to buy their own copy.

My Kid Icarus: Uprising review has just gone up on Joystiq, and it’s … I’m going to say “comprehensive.” That’s my euphemism of choice this time.
There’s just so much to talk about! It’s a complicated game, with complicated controls. Controls that made me really dislike the game at first — I came back from E3 convinced that it was a big old poop. I finally got used to the weird controls and found a very deep, very Sakurai action game.
One thing I didn’t mention in the review (it was already getting kinda long!): The soundtrack, by Motoi Sakuraba, Yuzo Koshiro, Masafumi Takada, and other such luminaries, is spectacular. I’d totally consider buying a copy. It’s really dramatic!

Tempura Wizard’s AR card for Kid Icarus: Uprising. Oh God, I never noticed before that he’s sitting in a bowl of steamed rice. Tempura Wizard, you are the best.
This really is a fine example of how wacky and fun Kid Icarus: Uprising is. I know I was vocal in questioning over whether this game would be even worth putting into a 3DS before, but having put a few hours into it, I can’t believe how enjoyable it is. I’m not afraid to admit I was wrong; I’ll happily eat crow for those doubts, especially if it comes with a side of Tempura Wizard.
You can see more scanned cards here, by the way!

Kid Icarus: Uprising’s AR Idol Cards, final release (left) vs. E3 2011 version (right). They’re different! Obviously, the game logo has changed since E3, and this Pit card has a different piece of artwork, but the cards have been altered in other, subtler ways.
For example, the stained glass-type image in the new card isn’t present in the older version. It kinda looks like some clever QR code-type thing to hold data, but I don’t think it is — because the E3 card works just fine in the game, and the new card works just fine even with my thumb over that part. So that’s not what the camera reads.
That leaves me totally confused as to what the camera is reading. Because… the game sees both of these as the same card…

I was about to eat a banana when Kid Icarus: Uprising arrived at my doorstep for review. I took this quick photo with the game’s pack-in accessory because I figured, what the heck, there’s always money in the banana stand.

Kid Icarus: Uprising Choco Snack packaging. These chocolates include an AR card for the game, making it relatively easy for Japanese gamers to get more.
In the US, however, Nintendo plans only to hand out cards at special events. Or, to put it another way, we’re all just going to download scans of the cards.

Kid Icarus: Uprising’s inside cover — the first U.S. game to receive an inside cover for our eco-friendly boxes? Also, I wonder if Pit looks happier in the Japanese version?
By the way, make sure to check Nintendo Video for the first part of Production I.G.’s Kid Icarus animation. Wow, something rad on Nintendo Video besides Dinosaur Office!

What is even going on in this Kid Icarus: Uprising trailer? It’s got Pit rolling around in a mech, some kind of hover-bike, and a tempura shrimp wizard that tries to eat you.
According to Youtube commentor Stellennium (yeah, this is what happens when JC’s unavailable to translate stuff — Youtube quotes), the exchange at the end goes like this:
Palutena: You can take your clothes off, I won’t look.
Pit: You’re so going to look.
Palutena: I said I wasn’t~
It’s a very silly game!
