“I Left My Heart In 1995”/Mai Shiranui shirt (click for a larger image). If you have a particular fondness for The King of Fighters ‘95 — or just 1995 in general* — Cospa will happily sell this black tee to you at its Tokyo Game Show booth for ¥3,045, or around $35.56.

Cospa is selling a lot of other merchandise for Fatal Fury, Phantasy Star, and Lain (in 2010?!). They’ll also have these Neo Geo/”100 Mega Shock” goods I recently wrote about at my other gig, which are neat but not quite as ballin’ as this old 100Mega Shock shirt:

I can imagine a Tiny Cartridge tee with a similar style…

*It was a pretty great year! Well, at least as far as rap goes — you had Liquid Swords, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, E 1999 Eternal, and Me Against the World all released that year and all classics!

Dharavi kids playing King of Fighters on a small arcade cabinet (click for a larger image), shot by David Hutchful.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen photos of arcade games in India, much less in its slums. This machine is small, but not quite as kid-sized as some of the cabinets in South Korea.

The boy playing should be commended for his skill in using the right-side controls (perhaps the left stick/buttons are broken?) while sitting in the first-player seat.

Oh? What’s that? You want more versions of the Psycho Soldier theme song? Why, of course! Here’s an arranged version from a cassette that was packed in with the Famicom version of Athena:

Athena is a sort-of spinoff to Psycho Soldier: while Psycho Soldier starred the psychic teen Athena Asamiya, who would go on to be featured in the King of Fighters series, Athena’s heroine is a different Athena, some kind of celestial princess or something. While I have an irrational affection for that terrible game, the focus of today’s post is still Psycho Soldier and its rad fully-voiced theme song — the first vocal theme to be used in a video game.

Here’s the version from King of Fighters ‘96:

And an arranged vocal version from a KOF ‘96 soundtrack:

From KOF 2002:

And a cover by Keith Burgun:

This is by no means exhaustive. We can listen to the Psycho Soldier theme some more if you want. And for more info about Psycho Soldier and Athena, check out Nicola Nomali’s wonderful writeup from GameSpite Quarterly #3.

“Kaze no Allegory,” from King of Fighters ‘97 Arrange Sound Trax. Thinking about Takenobu Mitsuyoshi’s Street Fighter tribute set my mind to another of my favorite slightly goofy fighting-game related tracks, one that, to me, is synonymous with KOF.

I love that it’s a meditative, sort of melancholy acoustic number … sung in character (with appropriately deep voice) by a fighting game character, in this case Iori Yagami, voiced by Kunihiko Yasui. That seems like the kind of thing that would only make sense in KOF.

If you want to sing along, and know what you’re singing, lyrics in both English and Japanese can be found here.

Exar’s Neo Geo Stick 2 for PS3, releasing July 16 in Japan. In addition to this, creator Exar is also releasing a PS3 version of its EXARSTICK with King of Fighters XII art.

The Neo Geo Stick 2 costs ¥5,229 ($54), and the EXARSTICK costs ¥6,279 ($64), though you should account for an extra $20 or so for shipping, should any of the import retailers offer it.

Both of these sticks are also available for Wii (the EXARSTICK in both Super Famicom colors and a Tatsunoko vs. Capcom theme), but I want to get one of these USB sticks for use as a PC controller. If that works. I don’t really know anything about PS3 controllers.

New Year card from SNK Playmore. Every year, the company puts a bunch of delightful New Year cards on their website, all featuring artwork of their characters in divergent art styles, and all with charming Engrish greetings.

I posted a couple of the cards from 2008 on DS Fanboy, but the rest have been removed from the website, just as the eight 2009 cards, featuring art from the various SNK fighters as well as Doki Doki Majo Shinpan and Kimino Yuusha, will be on January 4. Save them all now, is what I’m saying.

My favorite is the one above, featuring many SNK characters in a flat, chibi style. Strangely, it’s Maho Akai (from Doki Doki Majo Shinpan), in a cow-patterned skirt, who informs us that 2009 is the year of the cow. What is it with Maho and cows?
