You can read Anne of Green Gables and other novels with your New Love Plus girlfriend

It’s easy to mock Love Plus and its devoted players, but I believe the dating sim makes several interesting — even admirable — attempts to take gamers out of their comfort zones, motivating them to try things in their lives that they might not have pursued on their own.

Some of those attempts seem creepy, like encouraging you to take your DS and virtual girlfriend to tourist spots for a weekend getaway, but others can help you improve your life, like Love Plus+’s exercise sessions that psyche you up to do push-ups and sit-ups, and get your fitness on.

In New Love Plus, which hits Japan on Valentine’s Day, you are invited to read a book along with your digital sweetheart in a series of in-game events, during which you can talk about your thoughts on the story.

Acquiring the limited edition system will require a good deal of cash and luck, but the person who shot/posted this photo needed neither — one of the special perks of being Japanese actress, Kojima Productions spokesperson, and Metal Gear Solid voice talent Yumi Kikuchi.

Unsettling music video for New Love Plus’ theme song “Colorful Days”. There’s something off about this performance — I think it’s the combination of their motion capture body movements and doll-like heads. It looks like animegao, which itself is very disturbing (IMO).

I wonder if this lady was the mocap actress for all three virtual girls, and if she consciously adapts her body movements to reflect Manaka, Nene, and and Rinko’s different personalities. Do people ever stop her in the streets, confused by why this woman walked and moved exactly like their virtual girlfriend?

U.S. box for Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater (click for a larger image), which releases here on February 21 — two weeks before the Japanese and European ship date.

This enhanced port of the PS2 game includes support for the Circle Pad Pro, which debuts in North America on February 7 alongside Resident Evil: Revelations. And in case you missed this related news, Nintendo’s own Kid Icarus: Uprising will also have a control option for the accessory when it hits stores on March 23.

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D desk calendar. 100 of these are going to be handed out at random to people who play the Japanese eShop demo and fill out a survey. So there’s no way I’m going to get one of these.

How am I going to find out what day it is if Naked Snake doesn’t tell me? I’m worried. At least there’s still OtaClock so I can figure out the time without looking away from Metal Gear imagery.

The Witch’s Hat and Stylish Magicians Card Case 12 by Hori. Last time this series popped up, I was surprised by its apparent change in focus, to dressup-type stuff. Today, I’m surprised to find it popular enough to support its own accessories!

This is a cuter version of Hori’s normal Card Case 12, with art from the game on the front. It also comes with a sticker sheet so you can dress up your own stylish magician! The sticker sheet totally has the awesome cat who works in the game’s tailor shop on it.

New Little King’s Story coming to Europe! Konami, who is also publishing the Vita sort-of-remake in Japan, announced plans to bring it to Europe in 2012. The story blurb suggests that it might be more of a sequel, or at least have some alternate storyline that makes no mention of Corobo being a normal kid who discovers a magic crown:

“Set in a beautifully-realised game world, New Little King’s Story follows the player as they assume the role of a King tasked with reclaiming his kingdom from an invader known only as ‘The Nightmare.’ King Corobo, a plucky 14-year-old royal, presides over a stricken land. The evil Nightmare is running havoc and the populace lives in fear as it preys on them. Thus, as Corobo, the user must unite their subjects in order to fight back and reclaim the kingdom.”

I’m sure if Konami is bothering to localize this, it’ll publish it in the U.S., too (especially since every publisher is going to try to get every launch window game out that it can). But if it decides to pass on a U.S. release, this Euro version means I’ll get to play it in English! Me and the other select few members of the Little King’s Story fan club.

Commercial for Witch’s Hat and Stylish Magicians. The first game in this series came out in America as Magician’s Quest: Mysterious Times. Since then, the focus (and marketing) have shifted from magic-themed Animal Crossing type gameplay, to a more dressup-themed game.

When Eric showed me the ads for this game, he pointed out something interesting (which, he prefaced, might only be interesting to people who have worked on DS blogs for years): unlike every DS ad we’ve seen, the girls in this game’s ads all have custom deco-den DSes.

Also interesting: this long trailer (below) identifies the development team as “Loveplus Production.” So that team has been successful enough to rebrand itself, Kojima Productions style…

Why does Penguin Trouble: The Wars, some random Konami 3DS game hardly anyone’s paid attention to, look like the shit? Watch this commercial to see what I mean!

It reminds me of the Slime Morimori games (which just received a new 3DS version in Japan last week), except instead of Slime Boats and Tanks, it’s Penguin Mechas.

I am loving the Japanese boxart for this, too.

Beyond the Labyrinth’s bonus “AR Calendar” demonstrated. The Konamistyle special edition of the upcoming 3DS dungeon crawler comes with a desk calendar, featuring AR cards that each display a character animation like this when viewed in the game.

Pretty neat bonus! All my calendar does is remind me that I didn’t hit Platinum in Club Nintendo last year…

“I can’t condemn a love simulation like Love Plus+ because that game only asks the heart to do real things in artificial situations.

Much worse, I think, is behaving artificially during true situations. And that is a truly human behavior. I guess in that way, some games train us to be better than ourselves.

So if Love Plus+ really is about manipulating girls and playing romantic odds, to hell with it. But if it instead teaches painful moments of human connection, which are rare in these times, that’s awesome! Embrace it! Personal Trainer: Heartbreak.”

Jenn Frank on Love Plus and on “asking the heart to do real things in artificial situations”. The DS dating game, by the way, has a full English patch now available.

And in other fan translation news, there’s a new 1.2 patch release for Square Enix’s horror title Nanashi no Game, which should include some new bug fixes.
