Castlevania producer Igarashi leaves Konami ⊟
Koji Igarashi, the lead on all those “Igavania” games I love so much, left Konami this weekend, so he could actually work on some games.
"I’ve decided to break out on my own to have the freedom to make the kind of games I really want to make — the same kind I think fans of my past games want as well," he told Polygon.
He’s starting up a small studio, and will be presenting about the Metroidvania games at GDC, where I’m sure we’ll hear more and/or hear his Kickstarter pitch for the first time (I’m guessing there’s a Kickstarter – it makes sense for an old-school game producer popular in the West!)
Konami will continue its focus on Metal Gear and soccer.
Image is… not Igarashi, but comes from the Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin site.

Adventure Island II is worth noticing ⊟
Konami continues its inexplicable streak of 3DS Virtual Console releases this week with Hudson’s Adventure Island II. Maybe most of the releases this time were most notable for not being Yumi’s Odd Odyssey, but I’m particularly happy to see this one, and hope it doesn’t get ignored.
While the first Adventure Island game was a simplistic (but really hard) left-to-right platformer, and a port of Wonder Boy with a new character, this game is where Adventure Island split off and became its own thing.
It’s also a fun platformer where you ride lil’ dinosaurs! Huh, I guess I never thought about it, but I assumed Takahashi Meijin/Master Higgins was a modern-day dude visiting an island (because of the hat). Is it prehistoric times? Or is Adventure Island one of those “land that time forgot” type places?
Anyway, Konami is supporting the Virtual Console (yay!) with more Hudson games (yay!)

The Konami code works with Bravely Default ⊟
Want to watch that special movie in Bravely Default that teases the JRPG’s sequel (it’s filled with spoilers, by the way!)? The video is supposed to unlock once you’ve completed the 3DS game, but you can load the clip whenever you want by just entering the Konami code (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A) at the main menu! It has really become fashionaaabluh to stick this code in everything.
Castlevania 2: Simon’s Quest coming to 3DS VC ⊟
Yessss! This is the perfect example of the kind of game I try to replay every couple of years but never find the actual time to follow through with. Having it living on my 3DS is the perfect way for me to actually get through a game I haven’t finished since I was like 10.
Also, hey Nintendo! If you want, you can send us this stuff and we’ll totally handle announcing it for you! I mean if you’re just going to drop these trailers on the eShop like it’s not a big deal, we can absolutely help get the word out. Just saying. Images from this collection!

New LovePlus+ boxart and 3DS XL ⊟
I almost forgot that Konami announced another one of these updated games for the dating sim series. I always find the odd text on the packaging for these releases amusing: “We travel 365 days a year. Laughing in the rain, holding your hand under the sun. Our journey has just begun… LOVEPLUS”
No surprise that there will be three limited edition 3DS XLs for each of the game’s love interests, which Konami seems to do with each update. When these hit Japan next spring, each ¥32,000 ($320) set will include “the game, a 40-page visual & creation book, an illustration sheet with drawings of the lady in question, and a binaural CD with ten minutes of her engaging in intimate conversation with you,” according to Crunchyroll.
For your consideration: Milon’s Secret Castle ⊟
All right, I’m not the biggest fan of this particular game – it’s super obtuse in that early-NES way, where everything you need to do is totally hidden.
But the point is that it, like Star Soldier last week, is a Hudson game published on 3DS eShop by Konami. I’m not usually someone who supports retail advocacy (not having any budget of my own!) but if you’re at all interested in either game, I want to give you that little push.
Konami doesn’t seem to do much with the Hudson catalog these days, and the Hudson catalog is tremendously important to me! So any time it deigns to release a Hudson game, I want to offer my encouragement. My dream is for the Turbografx catalog to be ported to the 3DS VC. I have a couple games on my Vita, but it’s not enough.

New Love Plus Plus announced
Here’s a pretty gross Gintama GIF from The Grim Heaper, which I’m posting because Konami hasn’t shared any direct screenshots from the 3DS game yet — just this logo and some unexciting promotional art.
Scheduled to release some time between winter and spring/summer in Japan (Q4 2013/Q1 2014?), New Love Plus Plus will introduce a few additions to the series’ formula according to Famitsu’s report translated by Gematsu:
"The game’s theme is ‘field trip.’ The characters, time, and location are basically the same as the previous game, but it will not feature [Love Plus Collection’s] fourth female candidate Akira Yukino.
New Love Plus+ will have a new Illustration Mode. … They’re taking sections of the game that were too difficult and going back to the previous play style.”
New Love Plus suffered from some serious bugs — presumably Konami placed a bigger emphasis on quality control this time around.

Castlevania: Mirror of Fate demo out today
If you head to the eShop later this afternoon, you can grab the 3DS demo for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate. The impressions I’ve read for the trial so far have been mixed, but supposedly the actual game is decent times. Plus the cutscenes, like the ones you see in these GIFs posted by video game stuffs, seem to have the right tone.
As usual, you can see the full list of handheld digital releases for today, a couple new sales, and more on our Upcoming Releases page.
I happened to be reminded of Konami’s "Morning Music" arcade warmup tune yesterday, and went looking around on YouTube. And here’s a version performed by a string quartet!

Castlevania: Mirror of Fate's North American box. I'm surprised Konami didn't stick with the same illustration that was revealed for Europe’s box — this artwork looks a bit more generic than what everyone across the Atlantic will get.
