Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun SP

Arc System Works and Million have yet another 3DS project on the way from the Kunio-kun/River City Ransom series — Siliconera translates its title as Hot Blooded Tough Guy Kunio: Fighting Concerto.

It’s scheduled to release in Japan on August 8, with the retail version coming packed with a soundtrack CD. According to Polygon, the 3DS game has Kunio fighting a new gang of high-school punks who’ve taken over the streets of eastern Japan:

“New features include a city map you can freely travel around, side quests that you can take from citizens to earn extra money, and the ability to punch out NPCs — in addition to the game’s ‘real’ enemies — sort of make the game a retro-Grand Theft Auto, maybe. Attacking non-combatants will reportedly lead to unexpected story developments, not to mention the occasional police foot pursuit.

Kunio-Kun SP also lets up to four people duke it out with each other using a single game card. Two games are available: A battle-royale fighting mode, and a dodgeball game where you can build teams from a pool of 36 players and whip the snot out of each other out in the schoolyard.”

Aksys, the primary publisher for most recent Kunio games in North America, still hasn’t brought over Renegade 3DS or Riki Densetsu, so I wouldn’t expect to hear a localization for this. :o( Like, at least put these bad boys on the eShop or somethin’. Did River City Soccer Hooligans and Super Sports Challenge really bomb that bad?

Riki Densetsu (Legend of Riki) looks a lot like River City Ransom! You know, like all the other Kunio beat’em ups. Except this one stars Renegade antagonist and RCR partner Riki/Ryan, and it’s got the same “2D sprites in 3D scenes” aesthetic that was in the Japan-only Renegade 3DS remake.

It’s also single-player, which is a shame, but since it’s an eShop release (hits Japan next week), maybe this one will make it to the West this time.

Riki Densetsu (Legend of Riki) trailer. This Kunio-kun/River City Ransom spinoff, starring Kunio’s rival/partner Riki, comes to 3DS eShop in Japan next week!

Aksys was really good about localizing this stuff for a while, but the last Kunio game on 3DS didn’t end up getting localized. I’m gonna guess it’s because Super Dodgeball Brawlers, River City Sports Challenge, etc. didn’t sell…

Kunio-kun t-shirts, sold by Arc System Works in honor of the 3DS Renegade remake; like that 3DS game, the shirts are being sold not to me. That said, if I go to TGS this year, I will be totally on the lookout for a shirt of an NES sprite reacting to a punch. It sounds ridiculous when I look at it that way, but I guess I’m just a ridiculous person, because I’m fully serious about wearing that.

These shirts are, as far as I can tell, the only items on Arc’s online store that aren’t Blazblue themed. They love their Blazblue merch.

Fighting outside the Game Center in Renegade 3DS. It’s killing me that you this is just the background for your battle against this oversized sprite, and you can’t actually head into the arcade to see what games are in there. Remember how you could buy Techno Belts and R&B CDs in River City Ransom? I want an arcade equivalent here.

Here’s another newly unveiled video for the Renegade remake’s Mission Mode, in which you get to fight the dudes from Super Dodge Ball at a shopping mall.

If we lived in Eric World — a dystopian alternate Earth where survivors live in fear of their careless dictator’s appetite for strange and unreasonable video games — we’d have an amalgamation of all the Kunio titles.

You’d get to play for Nekketsu High School’s various sports teams, search the neighborhood for your rivals and beat them up, ride motorcycles around town, then hit the Game Center to play the arcade version of Kunio no Oden.

Hitting the batting cages in Renegade 3DS. It’s great that Million is packing fun little experiences like this into the remake, but I still think this game is going to have a hard time selling copies when it releases to Japan in a month, even with the reduced ¥4,410 pricing (games typically sell for ¥4,800 to ¥6,090 there).

Again, I’m wishing on a star here that this will sell enough to make a River City Ransom remake with this kind of treatment happen and release to the States.

Two minutes of Renegade 3DS gameplay. I know most previews for this import-only 3DS game are mixed, to say the least, but you’ll want to watch this anyway just to hear that remix of River City Ransom’s shop music again.

While I expect hardly anyone will buy this in Japan, I’m crossing my fingers that sales will meet expectations and Arc System Works will greenlight a similar remake for River City Ransom — I’d love to see this motorcycle sequence brought into that potential game.

Four-player Battle Royale in Renegade 3DS. How did that guy in the brown suit get a pistol? Why is he holding it with a side grip? No wonder he can’t hit anything here!

I wish using that bicycle allowed you to ride around the stage, running over fools, but no, all you can do is pick it up and wield it as a weapon. Who hits people with a bike? If anything, you’re more likely to hurt yourself when the spokes jam into your fingers. Know what I mean? That is some bullshit. I’ll stick with the soccer ball, or, you know, stay strapped with the automatic handgun.

Hey, I totally forgot to link to this over here, but I should have, since we’re all about the Kunio games: I played the 3DS Renegade remake at Tokyo Game Show a couple weeks, and it was… okay. Not River City Ransom good, but not Renegade bad. You can read other tales of ambivalence at Siliconera, Wired, and 1UP

1UP also posted a Retronauts episode devoted to Kunio games, including all the good ones and not just this maybe-not-very-good one!

In other Kunio news, Arc System Works updated the official Japanese site for the new game (Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun Special) with screens of Battle Royale, the 4-player fighting mode with stages based on other Kunio games, including the Crash ‘n the Boys/River City Sports games and that samurai one. This 3DS Renegade game will be out in Japan December 15.

Kunio-kun sticker sheet. Arc System Works handed these out at TGS to anyone who played through the demo of the new 3DS Kunio game, which you’d better believe I did! While there were hours-long lines for the Persona fighting game at Arc’s booth, I was able to saunter right up to this game with zero wait.
I’ll have a preview of the actual game up on Joystiq soon, and I’ll mention it here when that happens.

Roll out: New screens from the Renegade 3DS remake, or Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun (Hot-Blooded Tough Guy Kunio) in Japan, where it will release this December.

In the third image with the game’s menu screen, you’ll see there’s the expanded and RPG-ish Story mode, the original Arcade mode (but still with Kunio sprites), the Mission mode with local co-op, four-player Battle Royal brawls, the Gallery mode with “nostalgic posters and illustrations”, and the StreetPass Card Battle thing.

JC is flying off to Japan right now to cover Tokyo Game Show for Joystiq — if he doesn’t play and preview this at ASW’s booth, I’m considering his whole trip a failure.
