Million hints at Wii game for Kunio →

With the launch of the official Japanese site for Kunio Ultra Hot-Blooded! Big Athletic Meet, Million and Arc System Works also updated the official Kunio series’s index page. Interestingly, instead of branding it as a general hub for the franchise, the site presents itself as the headquarters for Kunio games available on the Nintendo DS and Wii.

As far as I know, neither Million or ASW have announced a Wii Kunio game. Of course, this site could be referring to the Virtual Console releases of titles like River City Ransom, Super Dodge Ball, Crash ‘n the Boys, etc., but for some reason, none of those titles are mentioned there. Maybe whoever’s managing the site just hasn’t gotten around to adding those pages yet? Or perhaps we’re just days away from someone announcing River City Ransom 10 with a playable Sheep-kun character?

Anyway, there’s also a new trailer for the upcoming Kunio DS game, Kunio Ultra Hot-Blooded! Big Athletic Meet, but I’m burying the clip in this post because I’m not keen on its 3D graphics or the girl’s voice over (you might want to turn your volume down):

Kunio Ultra Hot-Blooded! Big Athletic Meet re-appears, releases next February in Japan

I figured this game was dead, seeing as how we haven’t heard a thing about Kunio-Kun no Chou Nekketsu! Daiundoukai, or Kunio Ultra Hot-Blooded! Big Athletic Meet, since last January. Arc System Works, however, just posted a bare teaser site for the game, announcing its Japanese release for February 4th, 2010.

From NCSX’s product description:

“Kunio and friends engage in various athletic events including track, hockey, soccer, and dodgeball. The sporting events are played without too many rules so punching and kicking are par for the course.”

The four-player game is modeled after Famicom/PCE/GB/GBA import Nekketsu Koushin Kyoku: Soreyuke Dai Undoukai, or Hot-Blooded Marching Anthem: Go Go! Big Athletic Meet. Unlike Arc System Works’s other recent Kunio remake for the DS, Super Dodgeball Brawlers, though, this game is presented in butt-ass 3D.

Aksys localizes pretty much everything Arc System Works puts out in Japan, so it would surprise me if I didn’t hear this eventually announced for the U.S. You can hear a short audio sample from the game on its official site.

Buy: Super Dodgeball Brawlers ($21.48)

Screens from Kunio Ultra Hot-Blooded! Big Athletic Meet.

Spotted in the latest Famitsu issue, this 3D Kunio-kun title is headed for the DS courtesy of Arc System Works.

Presumably, the game will be similar to Nekketsu Koushin Kyoku: Soreyuke Dai Undoukai (Hot-Blooded Marching Anthem: Go Go! Big Athletic Meet), which had up to four players competing and fighting against each other in different sporting events — like cross country running, an obstacle course, and “ball pole.”

Count me in! (though I wasn’t entirely impressed by Super Dodgeball Brawlers)
