Special “Chotto Mario” 3DSes (click for larger images), sent to Japan’s Club Nintendo members this week who registered two 3DS games over the holiday and had their names pulled from a raffle. Nintendo made only 1,000 systems for each of the three designs.
As our commentors note, Europe and Australia have a similar lottery set up, where you need to register two select games to enter. And North America gets… nothing.

Acquiring the limited edition system will require a good deal of cash and luck, but the person who shot/posted this photo needed neither — one of the special perks of being Japanese actress, Kojima Productions spokesperson, and Metal Gear Solid voice talent Yumi Kikuchi.

As I feared, production for this is extremely limited — you’ll only be able to purchase one through the Japan-only Konami Style e-Shop, and you’ll need to have a winning ticket in a raffle before you can even put down your ¥22,980 yen (¥298) to buy it. :o/

Limited edition Kingdom Hearts 3DS hitting Japan with Dream Drop Distance in March (click for larger image).
It looks a lot like the patterned Kingdom Hearts DSi released in Japan back in 2009, but the system’s glossy finish and the magenta crown give it a lot more “pop.” I would actually consider buying this — if I was a dude resigned to buying all the expensive Kingdom Hearts junk out there, and if the console weren’t region-locked.

A shot of the snakeskin-style 3DS set to be included with the limited edition Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D system bundle coming to Japan on March 8.
Hideo Kojima offered his Twitter followers this cropped peek at the special 3DS and its “embossed snake pattern” last night. Like many others, I presumed the bundle would include either a standard system, or a simple branded 3DS similar to that cover from Hori’s accessory line for the game. So, this is a nice surprise!
Expect Japanese details for the bundle on January 20.

Even though the Circle Pad Pro only comes in black, it doesn’t look bad with a White 3DS… which would mean more if we had that color in the U.S.. It likely won’t look as nice on the Aqua Blue, Coral Pink, or Flame Red systems.

If it weren’t for region-locking, I’m sure plenty of you would rush to import this. Before the 3DS launched, I predicted Europe would suffer the most out of the major markets from the system’s region-locking, but between this and the White/ Pink bundles hitting the territory in two weeks, gamers are living the life over there.

There are a lot of third-party 3DS bundles hitting Japan soon — the three New Love Plus packages, and of course the white Monster Hunter Tri-G set. When are we going to hear about special edition systems coming to the West?
This slick-looking kit, a fine successor to the dope RX-93 Gundam DS Lite, will release alongside the new 3DS game on December 22 for ¥21,090 ($274).

With eBayer 765brianf’s auction for a collection of 30 rare DS systems over and done, I can’t send you over there to bid or anything. But here’s the auction anyway, so we can gawk at the amazing collection of systems included.
There are Ace Attorney and Maple Story DSis, several different Pokemon systems, the Gundam DS Lite, an IGN DS Lite, and even a GTA Chinatown Wars system! Oh, and a 3DS Panda dev system.
The seller must have been hunting rare systems on eBay forever. And given that kind of dedication to the platform, I don’t think I’m too out of line guessing that he’s a Tiny Cartridge reader… in which case, hello! You had a really nice DS collection.

Limited edition New Love Plus 3DSes featuring each of the game’s girlfriends, and sold in New Manaka Deluxe, New Rinko Deluxe, and New Nene Deluxe bundles.
Releasing this fall, the bundles will be sold in Japan through a raffle on the Konami Style site, so expect insane prices for these on auction/import sites! Konami will also sell standalone versions of New Love Plus and special edition copies with an art book through retailers.
Konami will hold a press conference today, and will likely have more info on New Love Plus and its bundles.
