First nine minutes of For The Frog The Bell Tolls, the Game Boy title best remembered for its unique engine that mixed top-down and sidescrolling perspectives, and was later used for The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

Along with the perspective switching, you’ll notice a lot of other similarities between For the Frog the Bell Tolls and Link’s Awakening, like the sound effects, inventory management, and even Prince Richard. From what I hear, the story in For the Frog The Bell Tolls is aces, too.

Nearly 20 years after Nintendo released the game in Japan, an English translation is finally available thanks to Ryan Parnas and his team. Download the patch here!

“Anthem of a Misguided Youth” by Benjamin Briggs. This arrangement, originally posted six years ago, seems made for dudes like me trying to choose which Legend of Zelda remake to play on their 3DS this weekend: Link’s Awakening DX or Ocarina of Time 3D.

Briggs explains the feeling he tried to convey in this mix of “Gerudo Valley” and “Ballad of The Wind Fish”:

“The main theme I was trying to get across with this piece is the fact that the Gerudo people are all thieves, not knowing any differently.

This is their anthem. All of the sorrow, guilt, and weight of immorality is balanced with a sense of sisterhood and acceptance, which is what I tried to convey with the ‘happier’ sections of the piece.”

“Are you proud of yourself?” I am in a huge Legend of Zelda mood this weekend, no surprise.

But it’s not this new copy of Ocarina of Time 3D that’s on my mind — right now, I’m struggling to stop myself from blowing crazy bucks at the eShop to procure Link’s Awakening DX, along with a half dozen other games like Donkey Kong ‘94 and Cave Story.

If only there was a way to run around the eShop a few times and walk out with all this loot for free.

Link’s Awakening, 3D E3 trailers on eShop

If you jump on the eShop, you can grab The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX for $5.99, and download free videos of Nintendo’s 3DS trailers from E3 — in 3D!

I wrote about Link’s Awakening DX (eShop’s first virtual title), the Four Swords freebie Nintendo will give out on DSiWare this September, and other Zelda stuff from this morning’s E3 conference at Gamasutra this morning. Link’s Awakening and Four Swords were my favorite Zelda experiences, so I am pumped about this!

And since there was all this talk about The Legend of Zelda’s 25th anniversary, I dug up this wicked (and super long) image of Link and different consoles over the years:

Threshold of a Dream, a “musical interpretation” of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening released by OC Remix. I’d forgotten how enthralling this game’s intro was!

This fan release offers 25 original compositions (19 album tracks, six bonus songs) based on the works of Kazumi Totaka, Minako Hamano, Kozue Ishikawa, and Koji Kondo — you can download Threshold of a Dream for free here.

None of the songs meld the original soundtrack with “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien” unfortunately, but there is a bonus funk tune called “Inception” that will have to suffice.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening restoration (a.k.a. sorta nude patch) →

16 years after the release of Link’s Awakening, someone’s finally released a patch restoring the saucy bits Nintendo of America cut to make the game more appropriate for the conservative U.S. audience.

In the North American version, the alligator artist in Animal Village paints a hippo model that sits down as you approach her (see bottom set of sprites in post image). Aside from the bow in her hair, she’s sexless. The Japanese version, however, gives her a hint of bosom and drapes her with a cloth cover, suggesting she’s a nude model.

Another edit U.S. copies received is the mermaid’s missing “necklace,” which she needs to sit on her favorite rock. In the Japanese edition, she’s actually lost her top. The restoration patch brings back those segments and relevant dialogue, and also fixes a typo and introduces a cave that was removed from the original game.

The patch is available for both the original Link’s Awakening and the DX release for GBC. Artemis251, who created the fix, has a lot of other curious items on his site for the game, like a Save Editor and a collection of unused sprites/rooms found in the game’s cartridge.

Castaway Boy Keith, a Zelda clone for the Game Boy from Epic/Sony. Originally shown in an issue of Famitsu but never released, this action RPG starred a young adventurer marooned on a small island, where he has to collect music notes in order to defeat a devil king.

The plot sounds an awful lot like Link’s Awakening, right? Well, this preview was published almost three years before Nintendo released its seminal game. Disgruntled Designer has more screenshots for Castaway Boy Keith (Hyouryuu Shounen Keith), as well as this description:

“Keith gets advice and purchases items from what looks like Doraemon but is actually a tanuki (Japanese raccoon dog in folklore, folks), and meets old wise men, as per the usual RPG quest. The graphics look quite blocky and tiled compared to more modern ARPGs like Neutopia and Link’s Awakening, but they’re passable for a 1990 GB title. All the usual things are here as well: heart meters, sub-screens, dungeons, items to collect, and a map to explore.”

Mabe Village (Link’s Awakening) 3D render.

3D artist MithosKuu is recreating Koholint Island in 3dsMax8, planning to eventually remake the Game Boy title after modeling every area.

While it’s a technically impressive project, and most seem to be excited about MithosKuu’s plan, the renders seem to lack the original 2D game’s “charm,” that hackneyed, ineffectual term/idea writers often use to name the warmth in their heart that they can’t describe.

Perhaps I’m just a nostalgic jerk — after all, I refuse to play even the colorized DX release, unable to deal with the newness of its fangles. This just looks too much like Pokémon Diamond/Pearl.

This reminds me that I still need to finish Link’s Awakening, a game I bought over 15 years ago! As for why I’ve yet to reach the twist ending, you can read the reason buried in this old Wii Fanboy post.
