In World of Warcraft, Hegemony > Postcolonialism
I know this is a little off even our meandering and beaten path, but there’s a fantastic piece up over at Terra Nova inspired by a discussion on the World of Warcraft forums about naming trends in the game.
People have been searching different names, from common names from pop culture to obscure concepts, with sometimes hilarious results. TN’s Timothy Burke did some searches of his own, and learned that not only is Marx more popular than Nietzche, hegemony is more popular than postcolonialism, with 72 results returned for the former, and a big fat zero for the latter.
A commenter on the piece, however, noted that he’s just started a character named Postcolonial. Only 71 more nomenclatorially adventurous WoW players needed!
I’m always very interested in the names people choose for their online identities, and I swear that’s one of the reasons I kept on with Final Fantasy XI so long—I loved checking out everyone’s names. I always giggled when Onionthief ran by (though my personal favorite was Vladtheinhaler).
