Most wished-for on Amazon? Not what you think. →

I was kicking around on Amazon for whatever reason (it’s there and I procrastinate on the internets, imagine) and happened upon the link for most-wished-for in the Nintendo DS section. I had to click, of course; people who enjoy random facts can’t avoid clicking these things, and Amazon knows this. Considering its recent NA release, I thought fer sure the DSi would be the champion in this category, hands (cameras?) down.

But no. The black DSi was number two. Tops on the list? Professor Layton and the Damn Curious Village. Now I can’t help but wish I’d happened to check these stats before the second game was finally announced for not-Japan. Either way, that Diabolical Box is overdue for real, and fall cannot arrive quickly enough.

Skateboard deck inspired by Square Enix’s The World Ends With You from TheNotoriousSDS at deviantART. Personally, I think this is fabulous, because a) skateboard? really? why the hell not! and b) I love TWEWY like ice cream.

In World of Warcraft, Hegemony > Postcolonialism

I know this is a little off even our meandering and beaten path, but there’s a fantastic piece up over at Terra Nova inspired by a discussion on the World of Warcraft forums about naming trends in the game.

People have been searching different names, from common names from pop culture to obscure concepts, with sometimes hilarious results. TN’s Timothy Burke did some searches of his own, and learned that not only is Marx more popular than Nietzche, hegemony is more popular than postcolonialism, with 72 results returned for the former, and a big fat zero for the latter.

A commenter on the piece, however, noted that he’s just started a character named Postcolonial. Only 71 more nomenclatorially adventurous WoW players needed!

I’m always very interested in the names people choose for their online identities, and I swear that’s one of the reasons I kept on with Final Fantasy XI so long—I loved checking out everyone’s names. I always giggled when Onionthief ran by (though my personal favorite was Vladtheinhaler).

Noby Noby Boy cupcakes, unstretched. I predict we’ll see a lot of things done with Boy—he’s adorable and easy to replicate.

“When it is an imaginary figure that is drawn, a number of concerns have been raised — including in some of the responses to the consultation — that Japanese art forms in particular are often ambiguous, so it is difficult to decide how old the figure is …

For example, images of an 18-year-old who is dressed as a child, such as Britney Spears in a pop video, clearly is not illegal. If it was a drawing, however, it could be illegal because it would be very difficult to work out whether the person in the picture was supposed to be over 18 or under 18 and dressed up as a school girl.”

— So, uh, is this going to include just about any game from Japan? It’s a half-serious question posed to our readers in the UK, who know a lot more about this than I do! Apparently there’s a provision in a bill under review that will extend a ban on child pornography “to include non-photographic images.” But as you can see from the discussion above, that might include a lot of things that aren’t so bad, depending on how such a thing was interpreted and enforced.

Be still my heart—enormous Perler bead recreation of a classic Castlevania screen. If I had any artistic talent or patience, I could still probably not pull this off.

Gardening Mama trailer.

Mama’s latest challenge lies in the garden, but you can help Mama enjoy the bounty of your harvest. Amazing! How long, do you think, until this one is announced for Wii?

As an aside, I would love to see training videos featuring Mama. She needs to expand beyond this game business and break into other industries.
