Love Plus, the Famicom cartridge and FDS disk … the Christmas ornaments. I believe these were made to put on the tree at the Konamistyle store, which is currently celebrating “Merry Plusmas” with displays and, of course, tons of Love Plus stuff to sell.

Konami is hesitant to provide any ages for the Love Plus girls, but it’s letting fans know today is Manaka Takane’s birthday. I’m sure you will all want to apply this wallpaper to your desktop or smartphone to honor the holiday.
Just a heads-up, we will begin celebrating Manaka’s birthday around 4AM EST tonight, and will take down the website around that time for the party. We expect the site to come back online within a few hours.

In the latest issue of SCROLL Magazine, Ray Barnholt and a team of contributors set out to give Konami’s Love Plus series the serious, research-heavy, detailed examination it never had — especially not from us.
The mag is a full-on primer for Love Plus, introducing all the characters (and their families!), tracing the history of its development and influences, and attempting to unravel the appeal. Really, the whole thing becomes a lot less creepy and more sweetly pleasant (think Animal Crossing) after reading all about it, except for the parts where you’re actually using your stylus to make physical contact with a fake person, of course.
The issue is available now digitally for $5 or in print for $11. It’s much easier to read than a Japanese copy of one of the games. Meanwhile, New Love Plus is reportedly not even for sale at retailers anymore due to its bugs…

I don’t think that’s where Manaka wants you to kiss her — this clip purportedly shows a weird New Love Plus bug in which the spot you need to touch on the screen has been flipped, meaning you’ll land your kisses just below your virtual girlfriend’s stomach instead of on her forehead.
From what I’ve heard, this Japanese 3DS dating sim shipped with a lot of problems like this, including one game ruining bug that Konami released an apology for this morning. Hopefully the developer will make sure to fix those bugs before this releases here next never.

New Love Plus advertisement. Why does this have no sound? Because this is designed to be shown on screens inside Japanese trains, and Konami is evidently the most thoughtful company ever. I don’t remember any other often-repeated subway advertisement being silent. I remember lots of annoying jingles.

Giant Love Plus girls offer presents in front of a 7-Eleven in Akihabara. This launch event allowed users of the Love Plus smartphone app or the 3DS Love Plus Tools game to see a gigantic AR version of their favorite girl.
In honor of the new game, Love Plus also invaded other worlds — like the PSP game Frontier Gate. Players can download Love Plus-themed costume DLC now.

New Love Plus AR cards. You may not be able to play the upcoming 3DS game, but you can totally download PDFs of its augmented reality cards, for use in both the game and the Love Plus Tools app.
Want to augment your reality in other ways? You can pay ¥315 a month to have Konami send you “girlfriend emails,” in the style of your chosen girl, using the nickname you have been given in the game. So that means there’s someone at Konami right now pretending to be like 2 million dudes’ girlfriends.

It’s easy to mock Love Plus and its devoted players, but I believe the dating sim makes several interesting — even admirable — attempts to take gamers out of their comfort zones, motivating them to try things in their lives that they might not have pursued on their own.
Some of those attempts seem creepy, like encouraging you to take your DS and virtual girlfriend to tourist spots for a weekend getaway, but others can help you improve your life, like Love Plus+’s exercise sessions that psyche you up to do push-ups and sit-ups, and get your fitness on.
In New Love Plus, which hits Japan on Valentine’s Day, you are invited to read a book along with your digital sweetheart in a series of in-game events, during which you can talk about your thoughts on the story.
A full six-minute date with Nene in New Love Plus. I’m really surprised the framerate hasn’t gotten any better — there’s literally nothing to render but one 3D model, and it’s still choppy.
In other NLP news, February 13 marks the Japanese release of Love Plus Tools, which refers to the 200-yen character transfer app, not the people who use it.

Nene Anegasaki enjoys the scenery in Odaiba. This is a demonstration of New Love Plus’s AR functionality.
Two more AR clips released today:
When I saw these, I just thought it was funny that the idealized, simulated date situations presented mostly seemed to involve awkward silence. However, Eric pointed out how impressive it is that the game can identify chairs and railings, and place the girls accordingly. Yes, that is much more interesting!

Unsettling music video for New Love Plus’ theme song “Colorful Days”. There’s something off about this performance — I think it’s the combination of their motion capture body movements and doll-like heads. It looks like animegao, which itself is very disturbing (IMO).
I wonder if this lady was the mocap actress for all three virtual girls, and if she consciously adapts her body movements to reflect Manaka, Nene, and and Rinko’s different personalities. Do people ever stop her in the streets, confused by why this woman walked and moved exactly like their virtual girlfriend?

New Love Plus prepaid cards for eShop, Wii Shop, and DSi Shop. So let me get this straight. Here in the US, eShop cards are impossible to find — they’re unavailable on Amazon and I’ve literally never seen one in real life — but in Japan, Nintendo is producing special limited edition ones for unreleased games.
And they work on Wii, DS, and 3DS! An embarrassment of prepaid riches!
