Things are happening in these Smash Bros. screens ⊟
Nintendo sent me a 1.1 GB folder of BMP files today. Yes, one point one U.S. gigabytes of bitmap files. That collection of images includes 200+ screens of the new Smash Bros. game. Since Tumblr’s gallery only lets me upload ten at a time, here are the ones I found most amusing from the 3DS version.
Most of them are odd Luigi shots because there are an inordinate amount of these images in the batch. The others are just weird/un images I found. King Dedede looks like he just witnessed something he can’t unsee.
The Year of Luigi games that weren’t from Nintendo ⊟
Some of the neatest Luigi games that released last year were ROM hacks of NES titles released by fans! Sure, there’s already a Dr. Luigi game on the Wii U eShop, but I like that this version from Shugo notes it’s a “Year of Luigi” edition on the title screen.
And while Super Luigi Bros. isn’t played in reverse like the identically titled, official hack included with NES Remix 2, it features “30” blocks to celebrate the green guy’s birthday, similar to what we saw in Nintendo’s 25th Anniversary Super Mario Bros. hack.
And then there’s Luigi Bros., a Donkey Kong hack where Luigi has to save his brother, and Luigi dropped into Konami’s platformer Moai Kun — I cheated on that one because it released in 2012, but it’s worth checking out anyway.
The Year of Luigi officially ends today, according to Nintendo. Why not celebrate it by playing some of these hacks?
Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Luigi and Red Luigi.
It’s finally true — Miyamoto posted this in Miiverse, announcing the imminent closure of the Year of Luigi Community and its Developers’ Room.
It looks like the release of NES Remix 2 and its Super Luigi Bros. game (April 25) will miss the cut-off date. Instead, going by Miyamoto’s quote above, the Year of Luigi will end with the green hero — suffering from advanced Irumodic Syndrome — somehow jumping between three time periods, struggling to solve the mystery of a spatial anomaly that threatens to engulf the Alpha Quadrant and destroy the Human race in the process. It’s an epic send-off that will bring together all your favorite crew members, old enemies, and someone we all thought was gone forever.

Put your 3DS in a Luigi hat ⊟
The retailer is taking orders on this Luigi hat 3DS pouch, which is made only for Club Nintendo. Play-Asia expects them to be in stock on Jan. 13, and charges $29.99. I believe it used to be 450 Coins on the US Club Nintendo site back when it was available.
What the butt is going on at Miiverse ⊟
I’m not even talking about the lovesick notes to Luigi. I’ve accepted that Miiverse has become a dating social network built to help singles out there looking for long-term Luigi relationships — LuigiPeopleMeet, if you will.
No, it’s the posts of middle schoolers seeking out boyfriends and girlfriends on the Wii U/3DS community: you need to read this. It’s insane. It’s amazing. It’s beautiful. It’s heartbreaking. Kids, don’t do this. But please keep doing it. It’s James Cameron’s Titanic, if it took place on Miiverse.
Searching for what once was ⊟
I think a lot about last year, about the wonder that seemed to swell in our hearts, as if everything meant much more, as if what we experienced was part of something greater and bigger than us. It’s difficult to come down from that. I don’t want to have just an ordinary life again, you know?
Sorry for this maudlin post; I’m not sure where I’m going with it. I guess right now I’m trying to figure out what I want to do next? I don’t want to be one of those people who always pines for the past, trying to relive what’s already gone instead of just enjoying what I had and moving on.
Anyway, I was reading a novel about Luigi, and I found this fantastic excerpt that seemed appropriate to share here:
"Luigi believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter — tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther…. And then one fine morning — So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
- F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Luigi
Thanks to Ash for the photo.

One more game for this, our year of Luigi ⊟
You already have plenty of options to make sure 20Luigi goes out with a bang, including the new Dr. Luigi release that hit Wii U’s eShop today, but here’s one more option. It’s an actual NES ROM hack based on the Luigi Bros. game included in Super Mario 3D World!
Hacker Clippit made sure you could play as either modern Luigi or classic Luigi — download the patch here (you’ll need the Mario Bros. ROM, preferably acquired legally somehow, to get this to work).
