8-4, Ltd. on why Nintendo ‘gets it’ with localizations, translating Fossil Fighters

With everyone busy playing/praising Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land, it was easy to overlook that Nintendo put out another portable title recently: Fossil Fighters: Champions, the Pokemon-esque RPG about collecting and battling “vivosaurs” on Nintendo DS.

I would have forgotten about it too if I didn’t hear 8-4, Ltd., who run the awesome 8-4 Play podcast, handled the localization. They helped translate a number of notable games, like Monster Hunter Tri and Nier, and also worked on several DS RPGs for Nintendo: Dragon Quest VI, Glory of Heracles, and Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon.

We got in touch with the 8-4, Ltd. team and talked to executive director Mark “Gaming Jesus/Peanut Butter” MacDonald and creative director John “Chocolate” Ricciardi (as well as Nintendo Treehouse’s Richard Amtower for a quick minute) about Fossil Fighters, how they approach game localization, and what it’s like to work with Nintendo versus other publishers on projects.

Mystery skateboarding woman resurfaces in Contra ReBirth! Yesterday, we traded ghost stories around the camp fire, recounting the tale of the unnamed and unexplained lady that skated across the screen in 1991’s TMNT II: The Arcade Game, never to be seen again.

Just when you thought it was alright to head back to your tent and go to sleep, Konami hopped out of the bushes, a flashlight under its chin and an index finger curled into a menacing hook, to reveal that the hot pantsed woman also briefly appears in last year’s Contra game for WiiWare!

Kid Fenris comments, “I’m torn between admiring this cameo and being disturbed by Konami’s apparently decades-long efforts to frighten this woman. She just wants to ride her skateboard, you fiends.”

Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth U.S. trailer. I’ve no idea why they chose this out of place music for the clip instead of using one of the tracks in the actual game.

Konami finally posted a page for the game on its U.S. site — perhaps this means it will hit our Wii Shop Channel soon? Maybe even tomorrow? It would make sense considering that Nintendo didn’t list Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth in its 2010 lineup (Cave Story wasn’t included in next year’s schedule either).

Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth stage 1. Now that this is Game Boy remake is available on Japan’s WiiWare channel, full stage playthroughs are hitting YouTube, and the game looks like brilliant, old school Castlevania fun. And the soundtrack — my God, the soundtrack is insane.

Here’s what’s come out so far about the game (spoilers):

  • three difficulty modes
  • six stages with alternate paths
  • no jumping on or off stairs
  • you can control your jumps in mid-air, but if you beat the game, you can access a “Classic” player style that won’t let you control your jumps in mid-air
  • Koji Igarashi is listed as the producer for the project (eat it, Iga haters)
  • M2, which also handled the Contra and Gradius Rebirth titles, developed this
  • Nobuhiko Matsufuji (Dawn of Sorrow), Basiscape’s Manabu Namiki, and M2’s Keisuke Koga and Jason “Chip-Tech” Nisperos handled the music

Even if you don’t want to spoil the game for yourself, you should definitely load up VixyNyan’s Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth video playlist in a background tab just so you can enjoy the kickass soundtrack.

Contra ReBirth video, Stage 1.

If you’ve already played Contra 4 (or Metal Slug 7 or Weapon of Choice), there doesn’t seem like much to get excited about with this latest Contra entry, released by Konami and M2 in Japan just a week after announcing the WiiWare title. That just my opinion, though! I usually need something new and gimmicky to hold my attention.

Here’s a video of Stage 3 and its robot camel:
