In 2008, Eric introduced us to one of DS homebrew’s unlikely stars (or, at least, one of the homebrew games I remember best): Magnetic Shaving Derby, a game about using a horseshoe magnet to drag a razor blade across a crudely rendered face (with “two plump hot dogs pressed against each other” for lips).
Now, even more people will have the opportunity to behold the Derby. Developer Nyarla has submitted an iPhone version of Magnetic Shaving Derby to Apple, featuring both the original mode and a new three-minute “score attack,” demonstrated above. Somewhere along its development, this became something I actually want to play! The new chiptune soundtrack (downloadable here) certainly doesn’t hurt.
I’ve previously covered Magnetic Shaving Derby, but here’s a video clip and an overview of the homebrew DS title — it’s a simple magnet-and-razor shaving game, like something out of the WarioWare series, except a lot more painful to watch/play.
The agonizing bloodbath after the 00:23 mark comes as a result of the razor slicing an acne bump, reversing the magnet’s polarity. It hurts to even think about it.
Two creative fans apparently loved the game enough to mock up some boxart, though!
I wrote about this ridiculous homebrew shaving game yesterday at DS Fanboy, but I was happy with my description of the on-screen victim: “You can’t see it in the screenshot, but his lips, two plump hot dogs pressed against each other, are trembling.”
