Kai-oh, or Sea King, an original 3DS project from Mega Man producer/Capcom veteran Keiji Inafune and his new Intercept studio. I thought for sure his new outfit was going to focus on smartphone games or some social stuff, but I’m glad to hear he’s going HAM on the 3DS.
This curious action RPG, which will be published by Marvelous AQL in Japan some time next year, is a new One Piece-ish take on the Three Kingdoms/Sangokushi formula with a pirate-theme and a penguin hero.
It’s interesting that Marvelous put out this subtitled trailer, and even have an English version of the game’s official site up — a Western release definitely looks to be in consideration. Now we just need a non-CG gameplay trailer to assure us that this is worth our excitement.
Senran Kagura’s moe-laden intro movie. Of all the groan-inducing news released over the weekend about this 3DS game, this movie induces the fewest or quietest groans, because it’s at least related to the game.
You know, when this game was first announced, I thought it was an action game that kind of happened to have a lot of boobs in it. Over the last few months, however, publisher Marvelous has made it pretty clear that this is a game primarily about anime boobs, a boob delivery service with some game elements attached, and basically the kind of thing that is a huge embarrassment to people whose co-workers assume they like every random Japanese game.
Animal Resort: Let’s Make a Zoo trailer. On the downside, those graphics are jank, real talk. This is not how you want your first game for a new platform to look. This is not a 3DS showpiece.
On the upside, chimp/camera battles. Elephant trunk snuggles. That thing I said about not being a 3DS showpiece, a couple of sentences ago? Forget it.
Amazon’s Deal of the Day today is Little King’s Story, down to $14.99 from its usual $29.99 price point. I don’t want to be one of those bloggers who bullies readers into buying a game — “you’re just the worst person if you don’t buy this” — but I will gently suggest that it would be a good idea to pick this up. It was my favorite game of last year, after all.
Even if you don’t really like strategy-type stuff (I don’t), the Pikmin-ish game’s mechanics are way fun, both easy to understand and surprisingly deep, and it’s all wrapped up lovingly in an irresistible presentation. Or maybe you just want to collect Cing games.
No More Heroes 2’s Japanese boxart, revealed today on the official website. It’s… pretty damned awesome. Between this boxart and the HOPPER’s Edition, I’m dangerously close to buying another copy of this game.
“Oboro Muramasa” by 219 (click for a larger image). I’ve gone old-school on this Sunday afternoon, returning to my longtime Muramasa fanart obsession. This artwork is almost worth turning your monitor sideways, so you could use it as a desktop.
The reason I’ve thought to post more Muramasa fanart is that I’ve recently started the game up again, for the first time since I bought a new TV a few months ago (sorry if that comes off as bragging, I don’t want to be that guy!) It’s absolutely the most impressive-looking thing I’ve seen on my TV, despite not being in HD or anything.
No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle for $28.48 at Amazon! To be honest, I was just going to write about this cute fanart, but I happened across that quite irresistible Amazon price while doing so.
I’m very nervous about recommending this game, because, like its predecessor, it’s hella idiosyncratic, occupying an uncomfortable space between drama, parody, B-movie, action game, and I don’t know what the hell else. I really liked it, though. In fact, if I didn’t have a massive backlog (and if I weren’t going out of town this weekend), I’d consider replaying it right now.
“TRAVIS!!TIGER” by LAN. I am pretty slow on the uptake, because I only just figured out the implicit connection between Travis and tigers that makes the (wonderful) tiger icon and No More Heroes 2’s tiger transformation more than random.
The Japanese word for “tiger” is tora, and Travis’s name transliterated into Japanese is “Torabisu”. It totally makes sense now! So that’s one thing that makes sense.
“No More No” from the No More Heroes 2 soundtrack. This recording of the ending credits theme is captured from game audio, and contains a line of speech right at the beginning that, I guess, might constitute a spoiler. Man, I don’t know.
This mellow, Western-sounding tune is an awesome reward for the crazy shit the game makes you go through immediately before.
“Philistine” from the No More Heroes 2 soundtrack. Inspired by some recent posts of JC’s, though mostly because I’m currently listening to an audio rip as I start work on my review (which should be up over at my site in the next day or so), figured it wouldn’t hurt to share my favorite cuts as well. The song above is from the showdown with the gothic lolita Margaret Moonlight, one of the later and more trickier ranking battles, and has been stuck in my head for the past couple of days (not that I’m complaining).
Though my fave battle would have to be with displaced Russian cosmonaut Captain Vladimir. Not certain if the audio works so well without the visuals (simple words cannot hope to properly convey the scene, which is not only genuinely awe-inspiring and beautiful, but puts many of the high definition vistas produced on the Xbox 360 and PS3 to shame), but it’s another song that’s been on repeat on my iPod for the past week:
“Twilight” from the No More Heroes 2 soundtrack. This is identified as one of the tracks composed for the game by Akira Yamaoka (who just left the Silent Hill team to join Grasshopper Manufacture), and it actually sounds pretty distinctive from most of No More Heroes’ music, even to the point of sounding identifiably Yamaoka — if faster paced than usual.
I finally got to play No More Heroes 2, by the way, and it is my jam. Even (especially) if I got killed by one of the first bosses.
“Happy New Year” by Nobiru. I decided to post some No More Heroes fanart today, just so we’d have another excuse to talk about No More Heroes stuff on the site. I have yet to play the sequel yet, and it’s fucking killing me. So here’s Sylvia and Travis in some semi-traditional New Year garb!
“Tiger-eared Travis” by Nekokan Batari (I guess). So that’s what the tiger transformation looks like!
“Sweet” by Usatarou. It’ll be just as embarrassing to buy the PS3/Xbox port of No More Heroes, with these costumes in it, as it is to look at this picture now.
