Mercenary Kings coming to PS Vita ⊟
As are Ninja Senki DX (another game with a Tiny cameo!) and Tribute Games’ next project Curses n’ Chaos, according to a report from Destructoid. Mercenary Kings is expected to have Cross-Buy with the PlayStation 4 version. The console and PC versions are great, but obviously we feel like the game will work even better on a handheld.
With a small kiss, we released March’s Club Tiny Mystery Gift into the air, allowing it to gently waft into the inboxes of everyone who has pledged $3 a month or more to our Patreon drive.
And then it EXPLODED INTO MAGICAL FIRE PINBALL AND BULLETS, because March’s Club Tiny gift is a pack of Tribute Games stuff!
Our lovely supporters get a Steam code for Wizorb, plus the soundtracks for both Wizorb and the just-released Mercenary Kings! You heard a snippet in the recent trailer, and you know you want to hear more of that.
If you’re a Club Tiny member and haven’t gotten this stuff yet, check your email and/or sign into Patreon! We want you to have it! Please enjoy!!!
I want to thank Tribute Games for providing us with this amazing stuff. Their support is super, super appreciated – as is the support of everyone who is part of our Club Tiny program. You guys, this is so important to me: not just because we could really use the financial assistance, but because I can constantly check the internet and see that there are (as of writing) 198 people who think our work is worth something.

Mercenary Kings out today, put this trailer in your face ⊟
Watch this Mercenary Kings launch trailer once and pay attention to the animation. Then close your eyes and run it again, and pay attention to the music. Like, everything about this is top tier.
If you have a PC or Mac that can run games, lucky you! You can get it today for 25% off! You might want to hang onto the Mac version for a bit before getting too emotionally invested, though: “We’ve found a game-breaking bug in the MAC version and we’re working on fixing it ASAP, hopefully later today.”
Mercenary Kings out March 25 on PC, Mac, April 1 on PS4 ⊟
Mercenary Kings, Tribute Games’ awesome run-and-gun-and-craft will bring the Tiny Computer to life starting March 25 on PC and Mac (where it’s been available in Early Access for a bit) and April 1 on PS4.
If you’ve got one of those things, you should probably look into this game, as it looks bonkers. And the team at Tribute has a hell of a track record (Scott Pilgrim, Wizorb)!
Holy moly, Tiny is a boss in Mercenary Kings! ⊟
Whatttt? This is amazing! Tiny Cartridge is a boss in this PlayStation 4/PC game (though he’s more of a Tiny Computer here), and he has his own theme song, and you can shoot him with a cat-gun that meows.
This is becoming a tradition with releases from Tribute Games and its members, seeing as Tiny also appeared in Wizorb, Ninja Senki, and secretly — but not really because it’s just a coincidence — Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
<3 game worlds with isometric views ⊟
As someone who grew up adoring games with isometric views like Shadowrun (SNES), X-Com, and various Tactics releases, I love seeing these shots.
The top image is concept art from Stéphane Boutin for Mercenary Kings — the PC/PlayStation 4 game doesn’t play or look like that, but it’s going to be an awesome run’n gun regardless when it releases.
As for the second piece, that’s "Bookkeeper’s Garden" from Chern Fai. While it’s not an actual game, god, I want to play that. I want to manage a magic library and garden, and be that little dude just getting a stack of books and reading them. Actually, I want to play/live in all of these isometric scenes Fai has posted on Tumblr.
New Mercenary Kings trailer ⊟
If I end up buying a PlayStation 4 this winter, it will be because of Tribute Games’ run’n gun here. It’s more likely, though, that I’ll grab the final version (there’s an Early Access build you can buy/try now) that releases for Steam/PC. Whatever, the point is that Mercenary Kings will be mine.
Mercenary Kings: Master Codex
Rad, someone’s making a Nintendo Player’s Choice-style strategy guide/art book for Mercenary Kings — rather, Off Base Productions will make the guide if it can raise $65,000 on Kickstarter. That’s a lofty goal, but the rewards are nice: digital and print copies, art prints, miniature Mercenary Kings arcade machine replicas, and more.
Tribute won’t release Mercenary Kings to PlayStation 4 and Windows until later this year, but you can still buy/play an Early Access build of the game on Steam. And, hey, we actually have a code to give away! Leave a comment, reblog this, or send a tweet to let us know why you’re excited about Mercenary Kings, and we’ll announce a winner tomorrow on our Twitter.
Mercenary Kings early access coming soon
Tribute Games put out this new trailer ahead of Mercenary Kings' PC/Steam early access release on July 22 — it's looking dope as hell, right?
I had a chance to try out the PlayStation 4 version at E3, and the shooter delivered on all its promises: fun run’n gun action, amazing 2D sprites and backgrounds, great four-player co-op play, interesting non-linear stages, and a complex crafting system in between stages for weapon/player customization. This is going to be fun times, people.
Mercenary Kings still ballin’
Still coming out sometime this year. Still has awesome sprites from Paul Robertson. Still much anticipated.
If you’re in Montreal, by the way, you can get a peek of the Metal Slug-esque PC shooter — and even play it — at IGDA’s DemoNight next Tuesday.
The Kickstarter for Mercenary Kings, the amazing-looking run-and-gun by Tribute Games, ended at $116,064, exceeding the $75,000 goal. As a successfully funded project, Tribute Games will now actually make the game, which is good news.
At the current funding level, Tribute plans to implement these features:
- 30 to 40 missions taking place on a paradise island under siege
- 4-player local coop mode
- 20 to 30 primary weapon sets (guns)
- 5 to 10 secondary weapons (knives)
- Various materials to build parts
- Basic shop items (rations, first-aid, grenades, and more)
- Main NPCs (Colonel, Gunsmith, Knife Expert, Shopkeeper, Helicopter Pilot)
- 15 enemies; 4 mind-blowing bosses
- 4 color palettes for the main character
The team still plans to implement the stuff from the other milestones (like, I hope, a console version!) using revenue from sales of the released game.

A Metal Wolf hoodie designed by Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley! If you’ve not yet met Metal Wolf and its awesome animation yet, it’s a character from Tribute Games’ upcoming run’n gun Mercenary Kings. You can get one of these hoodies after making a substantial pledge to the PC game’s Kickstarter.
By the way, I interviewed Mercenary Kings’ animators, Paul Robertson and Jonathan “Persona” Kim, about how they make these killer looking sprites. Read it!
