Earthbound creator and Nintendo collaborate for another fun thing ⊟
Hobonichi, the Japanese company headed by Mother/Earthbound creator Shigesato Itoi and the maker of fine daily planners, has teamed up with Nintendo for a cute, unexpected product: Super Mario Bros. and Mr. Saturn haramaki belly warmers.
"The haramaki was once strictly functional underwear that had a grandpa-image similar to yellowing long johns. In 2001, Hobonichi reinvented them as fashion items to layer with your clothes.
You know those everyday momentary chills you get when you bend over and your shirt rides up a little? Gone. I see London, I see France, I see someone’s wearing a super handsome belly warmer over their pants. Studies have proven that wearing this thick, extra layer around your stomach keeps the rest of your body warm in the winter. It’s also great in the summer when trapped inside all day under a blasting air conditioner.”
You can find instructions on how to purchase a haramaki from Hobonichi’s Japanese site here. More photos after the break!
This is the adorable calendar 1101 put together with photos of Bouillon, the Jack Russel Terrier belonging to Mother/Earthbound series director Shigesato Itoi. I put one in my cubicle this week, and I love it.
We’re giving away four of these desk whiteboard calendars — along with several Hobonichi Tech 2014 planners and accessories. Details on how to win one (it’s really easy) here!
Limited edition Zelda 3DS & Earthbound labels for… NES controllers? ⊟
This is weird but neat (a common theme for our site): that gold/black design Nintendo used for its limited edition Zelda 3DS and Wii U systems can now be purchased as a skin for an NES controller. There’s also a Mother/Earthbound design — red buttons/pad presumably not included!
GamerGrafx says the peel and stick decals are “precision cut to the exact dimensions of the original NES controller” and feature “a weatherproof glodd polyester material.” The labels are $9.99 each.
Laser-etched Earthbound/Mother 3DS shell ⊟
Did you see the new trailer for the fan-made Mother 4 PC game yesterday? If not, I have it for you past the break:
What is the video game, Earthbound?
Even today, it’s so hard to answer that question.
It was like a group of children taking dolls from a toy chest.
Old dishes no longer used in the kitchen.
Nuts and bolts found inside a toolbox.
Little flowers and leaves from the backyard.
And they were all laid down on the carpet with everybody singing made-up songs.
Ready to talk all day about that world they just made.
That, I think was how Earthbound was made.
Earthbound is on Wii U’s Virtual Console, guys
It’s $9.99, a couple bucks more expensive than the typical SNES download, but Earthbound will be on the Wii U Virtual Console today for the U.S. (releases around noon) and Europe. Nintendo is also making the game’s original Player’s Guide available online, and has optimized it for viewing on the Wii U GamePad. Let’s all complain about something stupid, like the absence of any advance announcement for the release date, instead of enjoying this beautiful thing that is finally happening. Credit to 3 for the pic.
The 3DS eShop is going HAM too: Attack of the Friday Monsters? Shantae (GBC)? Have you ever felt so alive? Has the future ever promised so much?
Next week’s big E3 announcement …
In a perfect world. Unfortunately, if it wasn’t clear from all the conflicts tearing apart countries right now or from the lack of remappable buttons for 3DS Virtual Console games (both equally troubling challenges our generation faces), we do not live in a perfect world.
We do not live in a world where Nintendo will unveil a Mother/Earthbound compilation and limited edition 3DS system for North America at E3 — just one where people like Mother Mazza will mock-up these fantasies for people to post on Tumblr. The artist also created a mock-up for a Sonic the Hedgehog comp and portable, but it’s not like the 3DS isn’t already getting a butt-load of Sonic games.
Earthbound will be on Wii U’s Virtual Console in the West this year
itshappening.gif, guys. itshappening.gif. Nintendo of America has not only acknowledged that a game called Earthbound exists — it has decided that humans in North America and Europe should be allowed to play this game on a modern console. We did it.
Also, I love this fanart from Sakusama.
Let’s watch some Earthbound
There are two new and awesome Earthbound/Mother 2 playthroughs you can watch this weekend:
- Shinya Arino plays through Mother 2 in this Game Center CX episode subtitled by Last Continue GCCX - you can download it or stream it
- Series creator Shigesato Itoi recently played through Mother 2 too — watch the 4+ hour broadcast here
Shout outs to Maple Leaf for the Mother 3 GIF.
Satoru Iwata’s killer Mother 2/Earthbound jacket
Before we get into this amazing piece, here’s a real quick follow-up to yesterday’s Japanese Mother 2 interview — someone’s translating it! They’re translating the interview, that is, not localizing the Wii U Virtual Console release. Just want to make that clear.
Anyway, Nintendo’s CEO and president tweeted this photo last night of a special gift he (and the rest of the Mother 2 team) received after working on the RPG. As you can imagine, this is an extremely rare item, but one actually showed up in an online auction a few years ago!
I’m envisioning Iwata spending the evening cruising through Shinjuku streets, wearing this jacket and a pair of leather gloves to complete the Ryan Gosling/Drive image. Iwata’s giving you a night call to tell you how he feels.
Shigesato Itoi + Satoru Iwata
I know that a number of you have crushes on these middle-aged Japanese men, so I’m sure you’re squealing over this photo of them together, thumbs barely touching, two hearts becoming one.
Mother 2 releases on Japan’s Wii U Virtual Console this week, which means we get this great photo of Nintendo’s boss and Mother's creator introducing a conversation between the two today (hoping for a translation soon).
"Ahh Ahh Can you hear me? This is Shigesato Itoi. Please give me something. Please give me Test Test"
"I’m about to eat a banana that’s been sitting in 50 degree celsius water for 15 minutes straight. ….Yum! Mother 2 is nice, but so is this banana.”
On a related note, awesome Japanese design site PingMag is back — here’s a great interview they had with Itoi about advertising and t-shirts from seven years ago.
Need this: Planners from Itoi’s company
This is going to be the year, right? This is going to be the year when you finally get your shit together, when you get your life organized and make a mark on this world. This is your breakout year.
All you need are some GTD tools to make it happen, you tell yourself. And it just so happens that Hobonichi, the Japanese company headed by Mother/Earthbound series creator Shigesato Itoi produces a popular planner, and it’s now available in English.
The Hobonichi Planners are like a combination schedule book, diary, notebook, and scrapbook, and they are filled with eclectic quotes and “fun items of interest about Japan and countries around the world.” And come December 31, you can pop the book on your shelf, and pick up the next year’s planner, creating a multi-volume chronicle of your life.
The planners run for around $29, but the fancy leather covers cost $168 — that’s how they get ya. Shipping will set you back another $14 to $17, too. There are also fancy limited edition covers on the Japanese site, and some of them even let you slip in a custom design like the official Mother 3 jacket.
Lindsay Nelson, who helped translate the English edition, has put up some handy instructions for the ordering process.
