The ‘Mother republication’ thing I mentioned briefly before is making progress.

It’s not Mother 4, though! This has to do with making Mother playable. I can’t give out any details just yet, but I do at least need to say that it isn’t 4.

Cryptic tweets from Mother/Earthbound creator Shigesato Itoi about a new project he’s working on for the series. Earthbound Central, which translated and posted the tweets, warns fans not to get too hopeful, but I think it’s pretty clear that an enhanced port of Mother 3 is finally releasing in the West through the eShop.

There’s also an update for the fanmade Mother 3 GBA English patch on the way, though it may see a delay depending on whatever Itoi’s working on (Mother 3 on U.S. eShop).

Mr. Saturn plush! Banpresto is releasing these delightful little Mother mascots as arcade prizes in Japan next month. They’ll be available from UFO catchers and similar machines, of course, as well as through random giveaways to survey respondents.
Meanwhile, in the rest of the world, 2006’s Mother 3 has yet to be officially released and arcades are a rare and dying breed.

Negative Man figures by Camille Young. Presumably, this signed and numbered set for the downtrodden Mother 3 enemy will show up for sale on Fangamer.net.
Negative Man is one of the most pitiful characters you can come across in any game, even more so than Pokemon's notoriously puny Magikarp. At least Magikarp can look forward to one day evolving into a fearsome Gyarados. With Negative Man, “it's always the same…”

"We miss you" by Masao (click image for larger versions).
Masao is pretty well-known around the internet for his weird art and hypermasculine Fist of the North Star-esque Mario Bros., but I had forgotten about the prolific fan-artist until Adam posted some of his work on attractmo.de.
After looking through Masao’s website, I found that in addition to a lot of embarrassing NSFW-type stuff and the kind of bizarro art he’s known for, he has drawn a few pictures that are just awesome, like the Mother 3 image above, and this Mega Man:

Okay, well, I can’t help posting one weird one.

It’s Gachapin as Bulma in Dragon Ball, flashing Muten Roshi in exchange for his Dragon Ball as Goku, played by Gachapin’s pal Mukku, watches in shock! Love it. I have kind of a fascination with Gachapin, though.

Heed well, peasants: when playing your pilfered Mother 3 in the vulgar tongue, take care, for King Wii has eyes everywhere. Glowing blue eyes.

The gaming industry seems to be on-the-fence about how they want to handle fan translations, but the fact that no one has said, ‘Hey, there is a legitimate business opportunity here,’ kind of surprises me.

We’ve got 30,000 people signed up to get an email when the translation is released; Nintendo’s marketing department would pay untold sums of money to get their hands on an email list that huge and highly targeted.

The fans have huge potential, which has gone largely ignored by the industry, something we’re hoping to change. Starmen.net has proven, beyond a doubt, that there is a giant pool of amazing talent in well-managed fan communities.

Starmen.net’s Reid Young, a day before the Mother 3 English translation patch’s release, commenting on publishers ignoring the fan translation community.

Along with today’s release of the Mother 3 English translation patch, the Starmen.net community revealed its plans to release the Mother 3 Handbook, a Earth bound companion to the GBA RPG.

In addition to the traditional walkthrough, the guide will feature eight chapters of original illustrations, photos of clay models, charts, maps, statistics, and game secrets. Starmen.net head Reid Young says that they might also include scratch-and-sniff trading cards with the handbook, just like the Earthbound Player’s Guide.

Expected to ship in January 2009, the Mother 3 Handbook is now available for preorder. Those who put in an early reservation ($20) will receive a custom-minted Courage Badge keychain and early PDF copies of each chapter.

Furthermore, Starmen.net will eventually release free, low-resolution copies of the guide online. You can download a sample PDF chapter from the site right now!

It has begun!

Here’s a trailer (possibly with spoilers):
