Flipnote Studio's plan to combat your vulgar animations of boobs, cocks →

Nintendo will finally bring Flipnote Studio, its free animation app for DSi, to the West, starting with Europe this Friday, and presumably to the States soon afterwards. I expect that with its debut outside of Japan, the amount of Flipnote artists drawing dicks, butts, and naturally dick-butts will increase substantially.

So, how will Nintendo make sure that your vulgar masterpieces never reach children’s DSis? It starts with the submission process — your clips are first posted onto Ugomemo Hatena, the YouTube-like site for Flipnote animations. If a Hatena user decides your Splash Woman hentai is inappropriate, they can mark it so that it won’t display on DSis for a limited period of time.

Even if only one person reports your animation, the clip will not appear to users browsing submitted works on their DSis. The Hatena Support Center will then review the animation to see if it should be marked as appropriate or deleted from the site. I’m not sure how the team plans to deal with users abusing this self-policing system.

Tattletales who report content that Hatena agrees is inappropriate will receive three green stars as a reward. It’s unclear what these stars are for, though! There are also stars for rating clips, but they’re orange.

So, don’t expect to see the rest of Yaranaika’s explicit man-sex scenes from this Flipnote adaptation:

Ugomemo Hatena introduces Plus service

Ugomemo Hatena, the YouTube-like site for animations created by users with the DSi’s free Flip Notebook (Moving Memo Pad) software, announced a new premium service promising extra features.

For a monthly charge of 280 Hatena points (I assume 100 points equals ¥100 or $1.02), Ugomemo Hatena Plus subscribers can draw comments or leave text comments in different colors, access viewer analysis and chart data for their animations, display a “Plus” badge on their profile page, keep letters indefinitely instead of for 30 days, and have unlimited favorite authors instead of only 200.

To encourage users to try the service out, Ugomemo Hatena is offering a free month of Plus. It’s likely Hatena will offer this here when Flip Notebook and the site’s North American equivalent launches stateside this summer, as it already has an upgrade option written in English on every user’s account settings page.

I’m all for it, as it doesn’t detract from the animation hub’s current offerings, and Hatena has to figure out some way to make money off a site as expensive to maintain as this. I’d hate to see this service discontinued after a year like Super Smash Bros. Brawl user-generated content uploads.

“When The Throat Is Dry…” by Willkun.

Speaking of soft drinks! I haven’t created anything nearly as cool as this with the DSi’s Moving Memo Pad app.

Here’s another animation from Willkun, posted on the DSi’s YouTube-like animation service, Ugoku Hatena:

Ugomemo Hatena Likely Coming Stateside →

Ugomemo Hatena — a YouTube-like site for DSi’s Moving Memo Pad animations like the one above — is a fantastic service; it’s what elevates the free flipbook software from a cool program to a killer app. It certainly beats the pants off of Pictochat (which isn’t saying much)!

And since it’s such a useful and well-executed online feature promoting user creativity and participation, we naturally assumed that Nintendo would forswear its existence when the software hit the U.S., meeting complaints with a shrug and a “not my problem.”

Hatena’s site indicates that won’t be the case, however, and says, with a wink, that the service is currently available “In Japanese Only. For Now.” The page adds, “Create a Hatena account today, and enjoy Ugomemo Hatena right when it becomes available in your country.”

While it’s not an official announcement, it’s a hint that we’ll enjoy the service when Moving Memo Pad releases in the West! Let’s celebrate with a weird Mario animation:

Moving Memo Pad’s derivative animations

[The DSi’s free Moving Memo Pad software interests me much, so expect more ramblings on it. My apologies! For homebrew animation solutions, look into Flickbook, Animanatee, and Inchworm.]

One feature that I haven’t seen mentioned about the DSi’s downloadable flipbook app is the ability for users to download someone else’s animation, and then remix that piece with their own art or music.

The above clip, for example, takes an existing “dancing cat” cartoon and draws in an accompanying mouse. The original itself is based on another piece, a strange animation with the same music. There are several dozen additional derivative shorts, some featuring extra cats, Kirby, Gachapin’s Mukku, and, yes, Hitler.

When a user uploads an adapted animation to Ugoku Memo Hatena, a free YouTube-like service for these creations in Japan, the video page notes and links the original work, so you can’t just take all the credit like a jerk. The same page also lists other pieces that your clip might have inspired.

And if you don’t want anyone messing with your art, you can lock your animation to prevent edits to it.

Here’s another cool piece, based on this rotating skyline:

There are also versions with Kirby and strange fish.

Pretty cool, right? I thought so!

Tatsunoko Productions (Speed Racer, Macross) animator Takada demonstrates the Nintendo DSi’s free Moving Memo Pad (Ugoku Memo-chou) software.

Nintendo brought Takada in to show how a professional animator uses the flipbook app. Several of Takada’s creations have already been uploaded to the Ugoku Memo Hatena service, including this Casshern Sins ad:

Though you’ll hear most U.S. gamers insisting that the DSi isn’t worth their time or money, Moving Memo Pad really is some compelling software. Creating animations like those shown above is easy, and the system for sharing/downloading them online is aces.

I’m a terrible artist, so I haven’t put much of my work up, but I did upload this cute short of my wife.

My first Ugoku Memo-chou (Moving Memo Pad) animation. YAY.

Yes, it’s tremendously lame, but my artistic abilities have always left much to be desired.

Also, I just tried to get my cat to sit in front of the DSi’s camera and play Utsusu! Made in Wario, but he was not pleased with the idea whatsoever.

DSi blogging is Movable Type for real →

Nintendo and Japanese blog site Hatena have just unveiled Ugoku Memo Hatena, a site that allows users of the upcoming free Ugoku Memo-chou (Moving Memo Pad) software to upload and share their pictures and animations. The resulting animations have a look that’s part Flash, part Game Boy Camera, and, I don’t know, part Rhythm Tengoku?

The DSiWare flipbook program doesn’t come out until the 24th, so all the (totally wonderful) animations currently available on the site are from Nintendo and Hatena staffers. Here are some favorites of ours.

Is doodle-blogging going to be the DSi’s killer app? I know I suddenly really want a DSi now.
