Super creepy Pokémon hack turned into a homebrew visual novel for DS →

As we wait for that fanmade hack of Pokémon FireRed to replicate the mythical Pokémon Black, you can carry the next best thing in your DS — Pokemon Ghost Black ReTold, a homebrew visual novel of the tale!

Developer Multiple: Option, creator of many intriguing DS games/apps like Game Trivia Catechism and Snatcher Pilot DS, has created this visual novel for the ongoing Neoflash 2010 Coding Contest.

It’s a simple program that displays text from the “super creepy Pokémon hack” post on the bottom screen, but throws in some images on the top display for extra flavor/creepiness. It’s almost like a special edition version of the story!

[Update: Oh God, there’s an extended ending in this homebrew edition, and it’s wayyyy scary.]

Buy: Pokemon HeartGold and/or SoulSilver

The Legend of Zelda: Molblin's Magic Spear children's book ported to DS →

Multiple: Option is the go-to guy when it comes to odd ports for the DS, having brought over adventure games, visual novels, and even gamebooks to the handheld.

His latest homebrew project adapts Jack Harris and Kim Ellis’ 1989 children’s book The Legend of Zelda: Molblin’s Magic Spear, adding music from Ocarina of Time and a narrator. You can watch the full story (top screen only, text is on the bottom screen) with narration below:

Notice the inconsistency with Link’s sword-hand. Odd! Also, it’s a shame the book didn’t feature Katsuya Terada’s art from the Official Nintendo Player’s Guides.

Multiple: Option's Monster Mix-Up DS →

I find most commercial and homebrew “Spot the Difference” games tremendously unexciting, but this port from Multiple: Option (Game Trivia Catechism, Snatcher Pilot DS) has an interesting history — it’s based on a Nintendo Adventure Books gamebook written by Bill McCoy and published by Archway Paperbacks in 1991.

Mario provides the Monster Mix-Up DS’s introduction:

“Dear Game Player: You are about to guide me through a great adventure. As you read this book, you will help me decide where to go and what to do. Whether I succeed or fail is up to you. At the end of every chapter, you will make choices that determine what happens next.

Special puzzles will help you decide what I should do—if you can solve them. The chapters in this book are in a special order. Sometimes you must go backward in order to go forward, if you know what I mean. […] Good Luck!

Driplessly yours, Mario.”

The Search Master: Metal Gear Solid Edition.

If you remember Multiple: Option’s Easy Proposal Maker, this is a remixed version without the “relationship middleware,” leaving just the tile searching game, now with Metal Gear Solid art and music.

For such a popular video game series, this is only the second MGS-themed homebrew project for the DS, the first being OtaClock, an alarm clock that requires users to solve math problems before turning off its alert sound.

And this is Multiple: Option’s second Hideo Kojima-related release; earlier this year, he ported Snatcher Pilot Disk, originally a PC-Engine demo for Konami’s adventure game Snatcher. It’s aces.

Easy Proposal Maker →

Multiple: Option’s latest homebrew project introduces a new genre/concept to the DS — Relationship Middleware. Quick description for Easy Proposal Maker:

Want to give your loved one a special message in the geekiest gamer way? Easy Proposal Maker (featuring The Search Master) has done all the hard work for you.

Just put in your message, and then let your loved one play The Search Master (a tile search game). When they finish the level, surprise! Your message will be displayed.

Easy Proposal Maker trailer:

Proposing through a video game seems like a total cornball move, in my opinion, but at least this application makes the game creation process easy for those who might not know how to program.

When I asked for my girlfriend’s hand in marriage, I made sure it was hella classy — I got down on bended knee, then sang Boyz II Men’s “On Bended Knee” to her, in its entirety, chorus and all. When she said “Yes,” I moonwalked around the room for 15 minutes straight.

Let’s look at IGF Mobile’s DS entries

This coming Independent Games Festival Mobile competition — an event designed to “promote innovation in portable games” — features five Nintendo DS entries, three of which I’ve never seen before.

Some look more promising than others, but I’ve gathered all of the independently developed DS titles here for you to preview. Who knows, one of them might win big like 5th Cell’s Drawn to Life did last year!

Mortley: A Stitch in Time (Yellow Monkey Studios)

A homebrew game from India! Is this a first? Yellow Monkey’s blog has more artwork for this adventure title.

“Its the yearly mad scientist reunion, or ‘In.S.A.N.E.’ awards! Award nominee Dr. Frank Einstein’s Doomsday device is a sure winner. But alas, its stolen. Dr. Frank stitches up various body parts to create Mortley, a grotesque rendition of a noir film detective who is literally falling apart!

Play as Mortley, meet fantastic characters, replace his various body parts with in-game items, travel back in time to recover the doomsday device and save the world in this quirky adventure game for the DS.”

Oozerts (Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab)

This group put together some really interesting prototype Wii games last years, several of which I remember seeing featured in some Brit gaming mag’s sidebar. You can see more screens and even a trailer on Gambit’s site.

“Oozerts, Tastipet Inc’s bestselling candy bar, is low on supply and they need help! In order to fulfill their shipment orders, you have been hired as an intern at the Candy Reclamation Plant. Your job is to dispense every monster’s favorite candy bar into awesome-looking candy wrappers. Your supervisor, Scoop McGoop, wants you to fill each candy mold with precisely the correct amount of Oozerts.

Developed especially for middle-school pre-algebra students, Oozerts will be a highly enjoyable and interactive experience for everyone, regardless of their age.”

Reflection (Team Reflection)

This sounds like Chronos Twin, except upside down! Team Reflection has a PC prototype available on its site.

“Run and jump across two screens at the same time! Reflection is a 2D puzzle platformer developed for the Nintendo DS at the University of Southern California. Follow the adventures of an inquisitive young girl who accidentally releases an evil being, and the no nonsense warden she must team up with to stop the destruction of the world.”

UZA The First Journey (Multiple: Option)

I’m really surprised that Multiple: Option submitted this instead of Game Trivia Catechism: The Secret of Mister X. I haven’t played UZA, but you should try out GTC if you get a chance! Download UZA here.

“Arcade action meets abstract art - UZA: The First Journey is an arcade action game similar to Robotron/Geometry Wars. Guide UZA through fifty rounds of frenetic action, where wave upon wave of relentless enemies test your speed, accuracy and coordination. Watch as your gameplay performance creates a piece of real-time abstract art. With only one life, how long can you survive, how much can you score, and what will your actions look like?”

Wardive (and-or)

Wardive reads the names of the hotspots in your immediate area and turns them into enemies which try to take over your wardrive-crystal. Try to fend them off with your touch pen, put your shields up, and don’t just stay in one spot. take Wardrive for a walk or on a ride through town. find out how may enemies hide in the area you are in or pass through.”

Here’s a link to download and watch video for Wardive. Developer and-or has another similar DS application called sniff_jazzbox, which “creates an audible city” by converting nearby wlan-waves into sound waves.

Good luck to all of the entrants!

Homebrew game brings Obama presidential campaign to DS →

Obama Says: Yes We Can is a Simon Says clone accompanied by will.i.am’s music single inspired by the Democratic presidential candidate’s New Hampshire primary speech. It’s not an enjoyable game, which I’ll explain shortly, but it’s interesting for a few reasons:

  • Other than Olympic Battlefields, there are very few DS titles that address political issues
  • It creatively exposes people to Obama’s rhetoric
  • It’s a stark contrast to programmer Multiple:Option’s last release, Sexy Blackjack Trainer, a strip blackjack game starring adult movie stars Sunny Leone and Sora Aoi
  • Propaganda with rumble support!

The game generates a random pattern of buttons for players to input, with difficulty ramping up depending on your performance. Because the gameplay portion has no effect on the top screen’s visuals or Obama’s speech, though, it seems like there’s little reward for playing along, save the score screen at the end.

Also, this is a terrible song. will.i.am should leave sampled mixes to DJ Premier and other more capable artists.

Game Trivia Catechism: The Secret of Mister X is one of the most interesting homebrew DS titles out right now, which isn’t surprising when you consider programmer Multiple:Option’s previous work.

Backed by a chiptune soundtrack, GTC provides a casual gaming experience for the hardcore, challenging players to complete video game-themed quizzes.

As you can see in the trailer above, the “gameplay” portions are also wrapped with a storyline about a trivia tournament. To be honest, it’s kind of boring to watch unless you’re actually playing it, so feel free to skip to the 2:00 mark for the quiz portion!
