New red boxes for Mario Kart 7, New Super Mario Bros. 2 ⊟
Like Nintendo did for re-released DS Mario games – and for the upcoming Mario Kart 8 – Nintendo has reissued a couple of 3DS Marios in new red boxes, a detail that is nearly meaningless unless you’re obsessive enough to be reading Tiny Cartridge.
I spotted the above boxes at Target this week: Mario Kart 7 and New Super Mario Bros. 2, the latter of which was originally released in a cool yellow box. Super Mario 3D Land didn’t have a new box, even though it was featured on the same display and presumably reissued at the same time with the recent price drop.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 diorama.
This papercraft project was included in the October issue of Official Nintendo Magazine, which you’d think would limit access only to people who are both in the UK and time travelers (so, The Doctor).
However! It’s been scanned and posted here, so you can make your own wall of gold. The game wasn’t my favorite, but this is some neat art.
The last New Super Mario Bros. 2 DLC packs are out
One of the $2.50 packs is a set of three “Impossible” levels, which you can sample in the GIFs above. As you can see, they’re not messin’ around — these stages are sincerious. There’s also a pack of “Mystery Adventure” courses with lots of hidden and alternate paths. Jeremy Parish has a great breakdown of the two sets, as well as some thoughts on the evolution of New Super Mario Bros. 2’s DLC
eShop brought out the Christmas HAM early, by the way, with more than a dozen releases (new games and downloadable editions of retail titles). You can see the list of titles, plus a calendar for upcoming games on this handy page.
Oh, and Nintendo TVii should be out now for Wii U, along with its accompanying Reggie Asks roundtable interview with the app’s developers.
Who wants free New Super Mario Bros. 2 levels? Nintendo has released a free Gold Classics Pack that you can download now. It’s filled with three Coin Rush courses inspired by iconic levels from the original Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3. Grab it soon because Nintendo will charge $2.50 for it starting February 1.
Infinite Koopa bounce trick found in New Super Mario Bros. 2 DLC. Though the video here doesn’t show that many coins coming from it, you could conceivably get many hundreds of coins in this “Nerve-Wrack Pack” level by bouncing on Koopas as Gold Mario, as each bounce gets you 50 coins.

A closer look at the NSMB 2 and Animal Crossing 3DS special edition XL systems coming to Japan, the latter of which looks like either a Louis Vuitton pattern or underwear, depending on who you ask. If you ask our readers, their heads will fill with pantsu.
There will be another Mini Nintendo Direct dedicated to Animal Crossing: Jump Out and broadcasting this Friday in Japan, 8 AM EST. You’ll be able to watch it here.

Oh my god that Animal Crossing 3DS XL (coming out November 8 in Japan). It was announced at a Japanese Nintendo Direct tonight, along with a new black Monster Hunter Tri-G system (November 1) and a red New Super Mario Bros. 2 system (November 15). All of these new bundles come with their respective games pre-loaded on SD cards.
There was also a second presentation detailing more games coming out on the eShop in Japan, including back catalog stuff like Super Mario 3D Land, but I don’t want to stray too far from the topic of dat Animal Crossing 3DS XL.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 downloadable content announced in this mini Nintendo Direct!
According to this fellow whose Twitter avatar is a man with a wedge of cheese on his head, there are three DLC packs for NSMB2's Coin Rush mode:
- Go! Go! Gold Mario Pack. Three courses, up to 30,000 coins.
- Challenge the Record Pack A. Top worldwide scores on the NSMB2 website.
- Survival Panic Pack, for experts only.
The packs, which will be released in Japan on October 2 for ¥200 apiece ($2.58) will feature three fixed stages each, instead of random levels. The course designs are based in part on Club Nintendo survey responses. Nintendo will release additional packs at the end of October and the end of November.
Welcome to this new world of downloadable content for Mario games. We’ll let you know once details are announced for North America.
Olympic gymnast Gabrielle Douglas talks about filming a commercial for New Super Mario Bros. 2, in a video that is itself kind of a commercial for New Super Mario Bros. 2. Or was the commercial I just watched the commercial she was talking about filming, in the commercial?
Just pausing for a moment to admire the cheeky level design in New Super Mario Bros. 2.

How to find New Super Mario Bros. 2’s secret “Rainbow” levels. Turns out there is one reasonably well-hidden level per world where you get showered with coins.
This video from Gamexplain demonstrates how to find them, which is both an explanation and a warning. If you don’t want to be “spoiled” as to the location of these hidden levels, don’t watch! You can imagine what it looks like to have coins a’poppin for yourself.
