Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii, a fanmade hack promising “a hundred new levels, plus new maps, music, gameplay mechanics, graphics, enemies and more.” This looks really fun, but I wonder how it fares during multiplayer chaos?
You’ll need a homebrew-capable Wii and a copy of the game (one you should acquire legally, of course) to play this mod when it releases this November.

These four-player machines are currently being location tested in Japan — considering that medal games aren’t too popular in the States, don’t expect to see them here!
Still, it’s interesting that Nintendo’s sharing one of its top properties with Capcom again, which we haven’t really seen since The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. Perhaps the partnership is due to the Wii-based arcade board that Capcom/Eighting created for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom?

Yes, one more post about a Super Mario Bros. romhack! This time it’s for New Super Mario Bros. 3, a fanmade game that recreates the levels of NES classic Super Mario Bros. 3 through a patch for New Super Mario Bros. DS.
As you can see in the extended trailer above, developer SKJmin has not only dropped in all eight worlds from Super Mario Bros 3., but also the stages from other Mario and non-Mario titles (e.g. Metroid). There’s some original levels in the patch, too. What you won’t get in this homebrew release are power-ups from the original games, so don’t expect to rock that shit with Kuribo’s shoe. :o(
While the patch requires a ROM of New Super Mario Bros., we advise you to not pirate the game and obtain this digital copy through legal means — though the legality of current methods are still up for debate.

I’ve kept away from videos like this to prevent myself from “spoiling” the experience before I actually purchase the game, but I put aside that self-imposed media blackout earlier today after playing PETA’s New Super Chick Sisters parody, which, to my surprise, isn’t awful! Well, unless you count the unskippable videos of chicken cruelty at slaughterhouses. That part was sorta awful.
Anyway, after playing that Flash game, I also watched 1UP’s multiplayer playthrough of a few levels from New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Even with players turning against each other, purposefully throwing their friends into bottomless pits and hogging power-ups, this looks like a supremely fun multiplayer experience. I guess those of you that’ve actually followed updates and new videos posted for the game already knew that, though.
Oh, and enjoy this expert playthrough on an NSMB Wii level that has more bullets shooting across the screen than you’ll see in any game that isn’t a shoot’em up:
[Update: Wow, I just noticed in this video that when you throw a fireball, it melts ice blocks that it bounces off of. Nice detail! Why haven’t I paid attention to this stuff?!]

So, Nintendo didn’t announced the New Super Mario Bros. 2 game I hoped for, but this will do! 2D? Co-op gameplay? Throwing each other River City Ransom-style? New propellor and penguin outfits? I can get on that. And it releases this holiday season, which is nice!
It’s not a game I can take along for a picnic with my wife, but it still looks like something we can enjoy together.

Fanmade New Super Mario Bros. 2 logo.
Everyone seems psyched to hear about a new Super Mario Bros. game for Wii, but I’d rather have a new DS release instead (not a big surprise). I wouldn’t mind if it was styled after Doki Doki Panic like SMB 2 for NES, either — in fact, I’d love that. Luigi was boss in that game.
My wife and I had a lot of fun with New Super Mario Bros. It was a great game to take out for sunny day picnics.
Nintendo’s E3 press conference begins in 30 minutes! It’s doubtful that the company will announce NSMB 2, but today seems to be a day when even impossible dreams can come true. Oh, and make sure to follow our Twitter feed for Nintendo conference snarkiness.
