La-Mulana delayed past 2010 →

“We are sorry,” La-Mulana developer Nigoro said on the La-Mulana blog, announcing that the WiiWare release will be delayed due to issues brought up in Nintendo’s last lot check. So… that’s just one remade Japanese indie game about exploring caves to be published on WiiWare by Nicalis this year, then.

The issue seems to be with the delivery and purchase of DLC. Nigoro originally planned to release DLC a month after the game. It now promises, “As a token of our apology, we will aim to release them at same time.

If you’re even a little upset at Nigoro for this, prepare to have your heart broken as you instantly jump to their side: “We are really frustrating to our ineffectuality like being stuck at such a thing,” the statement said. “Above all, we are sorry for the people who are waiting La-Mulana. And also, we are sad to be considered that Nigoro is always late.” E-hugs to Nigoro…

Six minutes of La-Mulana’s WiiWare remake. We’ve seen a lot from Nicalis-published games lately — that La-Mulana live stream from Nigoro a few days ago, then news about more possible Cave Story ports (DS hopefully?), and now six more minutes of footage from La-Mulana.

Anyway, I know you guys are going to fill our comments with more bitching about Nicalis (I want a Cave Story audio fix soon, too!), but I think this game looks great.

La Mulana test footage. Please keep in mind that this is not meant to serve as a trailer, as there are incomplete portions and placeholder graphics in the video. Developer Nigoro just wanted to show off its progress updating the indie platformer’s graphics for WiiWare.

Nigoro is looking for suggestions on what game settings fans want included with La Mulana. So far, this config screen enables you to adjust the controls (a few buttons are grayed out because the player is using Wii Remote instead of a Classic Cotnroller), screen size/position, and music/sound effects volume.

On the topic of Nicalis-published games, I’m surprised by the backlash the company’s received lately. It seems as if you can’t mention Cave Story, Night Sky, or La Mulana without someone scourging Nicalis for failling to ship its announced gamed yet. While it was a serious mistake for the publisher to predict that Cave Story would ship late last year (and while I disagree with the DLC Nicalis has planned for the remake), some of the complaints I’ve read have this immature, self-entitled attitude to them.

I know it’s been a long wait, but games take time to make!

La-Mulana’s WiiWare trailer, released by Nicalis and Nigoro with a teaser site launch and new PR text:

“Sealed since long ago the ruins of La-Mulana are yours to explore. Assume the role of famed archeologist, Dr. Lemeza Kosugi, and uncover the remains of an ancient civilization, the origin of man and all life as we know it.

Developed in conjunction with Nicalis, Inc. the re-imagined La-Mulana features a robust all-new game engine built specifically for La-Mulana with vibrant hand-drawn artwork, original audio and special effects not seen in the original—which used a limited 16-color palette.

Additionally, the new console version of La-Mulana will expand the mysteries of the ruins with downloadable content support including new gameplay modes (such as Boss Rush), special stages and more.”

Screenshots of La-Mulana’s 16-bit WiiWare remake, scanned from the latest Nintendo Power issue.

If you’re unfamiliar with the PC game, which is likely if you don’t follow indie releases, you can find more information and download the original 8-bit/MSX-style version at the La-Maluna wiki.

Nicalis releasing La-Mulana on WiiWare, more to come? →

Cave Story Wii developer Nicalis just announced a publishing partnership with Japanese indie developer Nigoro, through which the two developers will co-develop an upcoming title for release this winter.

Nintendo Life reports that, according to Nintendo Power, the title is none other than Nigoro’s MSX-style platformer La-Mulana, which will receive a 16-bit makeover (yay…?)

That’s great and all, but the best part of this agreement is that it could lead to console ports or sequels of Rose & Camellia, my favorite slapping game ever.

Cave Story tribute art by Nigoro. Like the brilliant art from Adam “Atomic” “Ice Cold 3000” “Gravity Hook” Saltsman, this was sent to Nicalis to celebrate Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya’s birthday. Also like that brilliant art, this one comes from one of our favorite indie game creators.

Nigoro just happens to be behind the wonderful slap-fighting Flash game Rose & Camellia, which, I just realized, I’ve gone too long without playing. Without the Rose & Camellia connection, this artwork is fantastic. Having noticed the connection, however, it’s even better.

Is Nigoro working on this game too? I mean, between Adam Atomic, Nifflas, and (obviously) Pixel, the Cave Story WiiWare team is already somewhat of a supergroup. And if they aren’t, maybe I should try to bug them about a WiiWare or DSiWare version of Rose & Camellia.
