TinyCast 028 - Real Deal Feels
Tiny Cartridge • TinyCast
TinyCast 28! Back at full strength, we spend a lot of time discussing Rusty’s Real Deal Baseball, Yumi’s Odd Odyssey, and other games we’re playing. You wouldn’t hear this discussion on any other podcast! It’d be weird for them to talk about the games we’re playing.
Seriously, though, I can’t imagine many other podcasts going in depth on the design of these two games like this episode does. Enjoy!
Boxart battle: Tomodachi Life US vs. EU ⊟
I’d love to know the specific strategies that led Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Europe to create such different executions of similar ideas for their Tomodachi Life boxes.
The European version looks mostly similar to the Japanese boxart, right down to the placement of most of the characters. You may notice that some of the Japanese Miis have been replaced, though (look at the kneeling “No, I really love you” dude)!
I really like the logo on the US version!
Atlus picks up Citizens of Earth for 3DS, Vita (and more) ⊟
Former Kickstarter project Citizens of Earth is now being published by Atlus for 3DS, Wii U, Vita, PS4, and PC. It’s an Earthbound/Mother-esque RPG starring the Vice President of the United States, and has a pretty fun gimmick:
In Citizens of Earth, the new RPG from ATLUS and Eden Industries, help comes in the form of 40 recruitable citizens, each with unique abilities. Everyone can lend a hand — from the way-too-jittery Barista and the ever-optimistic Weatherlady to the notoriously skeezy Car Salesman.
The company is even holding a contest to create your own citizen/combatant.

Is this real Tomodachi Life ⊟
Guys, Friend Fiction is never going to be the same once this drops in a couple months. And you’ll be able to easily share screenshots from those virtual scenes on Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter:
"Tomodachi Life already supports Nintendo’s Image Share tool, but the developers have gone a step further. They’ve included a link that will automatically launch the service into the game itself. So players will be able to quickly share screenshots using this tool."
It’s hard to pick a favorite moment from this morning’s Nintendo Direct for Tomodachi Life ⊟
So I’m just going to make GIFs for a bunch of them and post the scenes. I loved this snippet of Nintendo’s execs and other staff members (haha at Miyamoto dressed as a cowboy in the back) dancing around a Virtual Boy, paying tribute to its creator Gunpei Yokoi, RIP. Knowing hardly anything about the man, I have a feeling Yokoi would have loved this game.
Who knows, maybe he might have also loved Christina Aguilera, who Nintendo of America has enlisted to help promote this game. Here’s the first video the company has posted starring the singer’s Mii — Nintendo intends to bring in other celebrities for its ads. Not a bad idea, since a lot of Tomodachi Life’s fun is in seeing familiar people interact with each other in surprising ways.
Tomodachi Life coming on June 6 ⊟
The announcement is here! Tomodachi Life, (or Tomodachi Collection: New Life as it’s known in Japan), will release to the States on June 6 for just $34.99! The 3DS life sim for your Miis will also hit Europe on June 6.
Here’s a Nintendo Direct with all the details, starring Bill Trinen and Satoru Iwata’s Miis (there’s one for Europe with Satoru Shibata), with adorable text-to-speech voices. If you ever wanted a peek at the secret virtual lives of Nintendo’s executives, there are like 50 million amazing things in this video.
Super old game Mach Rider on 3DS VC tomorrow ⊟
Mach Rider was one of the launch games for the NES in 1985, and probably one of the lesser-known ones. And now it’s coming out on 3DS Virtual Console tomorrow in North America!
I can’t remember if I’ve played Mach Rider, actually, which means that either it’s the rare early NES game I missed, or it’s totally forgettable. Either way, it’s neat to see such a vintage NES game show up on 3DS.
Mach Rider is pretty weird among Nintendo games: post-apocalyptic motorcycle gun combat isn’t really, like, Nintendo’s usual mood. Even weirder, it’s based on a toy from 1972 that wasn’t a motorcycle.

Sonic Powered’s Skypeace ⊟
This is a 3DS game about someone who really knows how to video chat.
Okay, it’s actually a Jetpack Joyride-type game about flying around on a surfboard thing and picking up thousands of coins.
I can’t really tell, but it looks like you have direct movement control over the character rather than simply holding the touchscreen to control altitude, which seems like it would make the game way easier. Unless the levels get that much more difficult to compensate.
Anyway, this is out… today in Japan for just 300 yen.

Namco items in Super Smash Bros. ⊟
It makes sense that some Namco representation would show up in the new Smash Bros. game, which Bandai Namco is co-developing (even though Game Arts didn’t get any nods in Brawl…)
Some previously unseen items have shown up in a giant set of screenshots Nintendo quietly released yesterday, including Galaga enemies that capture fighters, and… the “Special” flag from Rally-X?
Wait, does somebody like Rally-X? That much?
I’ve also included a couple screens of the Animal Crossing-based beehive item, because hahahahaha that’s awesome.
In case you forgot this happened last night ⊟
It happened. It wasn’t a dream. Mega Man’s “Final Smash” move in the new Smash Bros. has the hero lined up with Volnutt, X, and other variations to deliver a light show.
Greninja’s big splash ⊟
B-because it’s like a big splash page and Greninja is a water type and I’m sorry.
Anyway, this new art by Pokemon artist Ken Sugimori was added to the official Smash Bros. site after the character’s announcement (answering Eric’s heart’s wish). It looks pretty great, except Peach just looks kind of irritated.
New Smash Bros. coming to 3DS this summer ⊟
… and this Winter for Wii U. Not great news for those hoping to play this on a big screen TV, but it’s awesome for people who are fans of tiny cartridges, which I believe we have a few of.
Along with offering 60 FPS gameplay even while in stereoscopic 3D mode, the 3DS version will have an exclusive Smash Run mode. The mode has you and up to three other players fighting a mix of enemies from Nintendo games in a huge dungeon, gathering power-ups and eventually battling each other.
Both the Wii U and 3DS versions will feature online multiplayer, allowing you to play For Fun or For Glory (detailed in shots above!). They’ll also offer Charizard and Greninja as playable fighters!
