Preorders for New 3DS and XL are open ⊟
If you want a New 3DS early and can’t wait until 2015 for it to release in the West, Play-Asia will ship one to you when the portable releases in October. While it’s likely the hardware will be region-locked again, there’s a possibility the upcoming (but delayed) 3DS Homebrew Channel will eventually fix that.
New Nintendo 3DS (White) - $199.99
New Nintendo 3DS (Black) - $199.99
New Nintendo 3DS LL/XL (Metallic Blue) - $219.99
New Nintendo 3DS LL/XL (White - Metallic Black?) - $219.99
Note that the last listing is for a White 3DS XL, which doesn’t actually exist — it’s probably for the Metallic Black edition. Also, all these prices are before the $15-30 shipping/handling fees. Play-Asia will throw in one of its free branded 3DS cases with each order, too. We will let you know when the custom faceplates and docks are for up for preorder too!

Five more random things about the New 3DS ⊟

We’ve covered the basics about the New 3DS\XL hardware and today’s related software announcements, but here are a few minor items about the portable, mostly gleaned from the Nintendo’s Japanese FAQ. It’s just random things to think about, s we wait for the handheld to release in the West next year.

  1. No more wireless switch on the New 3DS - you’ll need to turn the wireless function on and off through the Home menu.
  2. Speaking of wireless, you can now transfer media files to your PC without needing to pull out the microSD card. Unfortunately, this feature is supported by only Windows 8.1 and 7 systems, and not Macs. :o/
  3. To disable the built-in web browser’s parental control filter, users will need to register a valid credit card and pay a fee of ¥30 yen ($0.29), according to Kotaku.
  4. But thanks to its HTML5 support, the New 3DS’s browser can now play videos — I expect 3DS traffic to PornHub to spike!
  5. You’ll be able to play most DS games on the New 3DS, except for ones with odd cartridges or casing, like these three releases that Japanese 3DS pointed out.

Also, I said it earlier, but I’ll mention it again: it’s really cute that the colored lines for the Amiibo logo are the same as the ones on the *New* 3DS logo. The GIFs are via Xavier.

Limited Edition Smash Bros. 3DS XL unveiled ⊟

So far it’s only announced for Europe, but I would be surprised if Nintendo of America didn’t support such a big release with special edition hardware in the States. This bundle, which includes a pre-installed digital copy of Smash Bros., will launch alongside the 3DS game in Europe on October 3.

The company also announced Meta Knight will return as a playable fighter.

3DS XL Cyber Arcade Kit ⊟

Add another one to the list of fun Cyber Gadget accessories! This lets you attach a balltop arcade stick on top of your 3DS XL’s directional pad, which I’m sure will benefit a number of games. Expect this to release in Japan on October 31 for ¥3,002 ($30).

Guys, more Kitty Kat 3DS XL covers ⊟

Cyber Gadget done did it again — its releasing a fresh set of Nyan silicon covers with new designs for ¥1580 (around $15) each. While they release in Japan next week, you can buy the original Nyan covers — available in White, Pink, and Black — along with Paw Pad touch pens on Amazon right now.

Yoshi’s new 3DS XL cases ⊟

These two cases from perennial accessory manufacturer Keys Factory will be hitting Japan in a couple weeks alongside Yoshi’s New Island's launch there. Play-Asia has both cases for $14 each. Credit to NintendoTweet for the pics.

Mario White 3DS XL for US region ⊟
Well, all right. It’s not FOR the US region, but it is compatible with the US region. I spotted a weird listing on Play-Asia the other day for this “Mario White” 3DS XL, with copies of New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2011, shipping in July. It specifically said it was US region compatible… I thought the whole thing was a mistake.
But apparently not. NintendoTweet mentioned that it was actually being released in Southeast Asia (which uses the same region code as us for 3DS) by Maxsoft, the Nintendo distributor in that area. And this Yahoo article has confirmation from Maxsoft.
So yeah, looks like you can order yourself a really cool, previously China-only Mario White 3DS XL (that comes with an old-ass soccer game) and play your US games on it.

Clear Famicom case for your 3DS XL ⊟

Catering to our obsessions with making video game systems we play look like another video game we used to play, Datel will produce this neat protective shell for 3DS XLs. It goes well with this case, too.

NintendoTweet points out that this releases in Japan in late June for ¥1,490, or around $14.50.

J-League x Pokemon 3DS XLs ⊟
If you live in Japan and love Japanese soccer, you might have a shot at one of these. The three Pokemon-themed 3DS LL systems above will be given away at Marinos (white), Urawa Reds (red), and FC Tokyo (blue) games, with the number of systems distributed depending on the score of the home team.
Fans will also get special Pikachu-playing-soccer Pokemon cards, and can even meet Pikachu! A suspiciously human-sized Pikachu, but still. That’s just more Pikachu to hug.

Price cut on five 3DS staples ⊟
This little dude (a Dr. Who 3DS XL from Nessa, via My Handheld) looks pretty happy about something. Maybe it’s Nintendo of America permanently cutting the price for five of its biggest 3DS releases.
Starting April 22, you’ll be able to buy the following games from the eShop or retailers for $29.99 each:
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
Mario Kart 7
New Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario 3D Land
All of those games have hovered around $30 for a while at some point, and a couple even launched at only $35. Still, yay for cheaper games. I haven’t spent enough time with DKCR 3D or NSMB 2 to deliver a verdict on them, but the other three are must-buys if you are the type of person who likes to play games that are fun. Otherwise, they’re alright to skip.

What’s the deal with special edition 3DSes lately? ⊟
It looks like the Mickey 3DS XL that’s coming to Walmart in two weeks, priced at $199, doesn’t include a copy of Disney Magical World, despite releasing on the same day as the game and bearing its name on the lid.
It’s understandable that the GameStop-exclusive Peach Pink 2DS won’t come with the game either, as it’s not explicitly linked to the title even though it comes with a branded Disney Magical World case. But last month’s Yoshi 3DS XL didn’t include Yoshi’s New Island either? Is this the new deal with limited edition hardware releases?

Disney Magical World 3DS XL coming to US ⊟

Spotted in press photos Nintendo put out today of Disney Channel star G Hannelius (her first name is just G?) playing Disney Magical World was the special edition white 3DS XL that was released in Japan. It looks like this is also coming to North America, exclusive to Walmart — meanwhile, GameStop has the exclusive on the Peach Pink 2DS that will launch alongside the game on April 11.

Judging by the photos Nintendo put out, the North American ”Mickey Edition 3DS XL” looks just like the Japanese edition posted above, except it will say Disney Magical World instead of Disney Magic Castle.
