Pulsewave contest winners!

Not that we want you to stop sharing your Game Boy memories, but we’ve picked our winners for the Pulsewave/Nonfinite/8bitpeoples/us contest. So now if you craft a heartwarming tale about your childhood love of TMNT Fall of the Foot Clan, it’ll have to be for your own reasons.

The grand prize of two Pulsewave tickets, $25 at Nonelectronics, a Pulsewave poster, and an 8bitpeoples prize pack goes to Simon Forkton, who charmed us with his tale of chiptune busking for Game Boy money.

Our runners-up are Bleo, who “can proudly say that I wrote a song that was heard at the Sundance Film Festival… on the toilet” and ZenAlbatross, who took a bus ride with Kirby. They’ll each get a single Pulsewave ticket, a poster, and $10 at Nonelectronics.

Congratulations to our winners, and thanks to Pulsewave, 8bitpeoples and Nonfinite Electronics! We love being able to put awesome stuff in our readers’ hands.

Modded duotone (Black/White) Game Boy by Nonfinite. I showed off this glorious customization before, but this post comes with video and a demonstration of the system’s chip music capabilities. Fuuuuuuuckkkkk.

I have a whole round-up of chiptune-related links I’ve been meaning to share with you this past week:

  • First off, congrats to Leeni for winning the Beaterator Challenge, a competition that had entrants creating original songs with Beaterator for PSP. I don’t like her submission as much as some of her other tracks like “Animatronic Boy” or “Nice Young Man”, but it’s great a chip artist won and took home $5,000.
  • Someone (or a group of someones?) launched Chipmusic.org, a new community for micromusic artists and fans, and an alternative to 8bit Collective. The design seems Minusbaby-esque, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s involved! It’s just a forum right now, but apparently music/image uploads, a video area, and member blogs are in the works.
  • Marjorie Becker took dozens of amazing photographs at Blip Festival 2009.
  • Again, you should read Matthew “fort90” Hawkins’s extensive report on Blip Festival 2009.
  • The latest episode of Penny Arcade: The Series is out (Child’s Play, Part 1), which is produced by the talented 2 Player Productions, so of course it has a great chip soundtrack.

Nonfinite shows off Starpause underclocked, modded Game Boy. Great video of a backlit system! Someone definitely needs to buy one of these for me for Christmas.

Modded duotone (Black/White) Game Boy. Fuuuuckkkk.

Sent from the future to save mankind, this custom sysem features several modifications by Nonfinite:

  • rebuilt with Black backing and a White face
  • switched out buttons (this color configuration doesn’t seem to match the White Game Boy’s)
  • added Pro Sound 1/8” jack
  • added Green Pro Backlight

My birthday is this July, so waste no time trying to find me one of these for my present. Here’s a shot of the portable’s back, to give you a better idea of the duotone setup:

Please note that I’m not sharing this today because it’s the Game Boy’s 20th birthday; I’m putting it up on Tiny Cartridge because we post dope handheld shit on the regular. If he were still alive, I’m certain Gunpei Yokoi would be refreshing this site every five minutes, replying to us on Twitter like it ain’t a god damn thing.

R.I.P. Gunpei Yokoi.

Game Boys with Pro Backlights →

Ohhhhhh snap! I would love to acquire one of these and play an evil game of Final Fantasy Adventure. Hardware hacker and chiptune artist Nonfinite didn’t stop at just creating a red-screened system:

Nonfinite says that DIY kits and pre-modded units will be available for purchase at the upcoming Blip Festival event. Presumably, he will also eventually sell the systems through his online shop.

You can see more photos and a video of the handhelds, at the above link. The blue/purple one, in particular, looks like the fucking business.
