Tiny Cartridge

It’s rare that I get to post event news that personally benefits me, so I’m happy to report this: chiptune legend Nullsleep is embarking on a US tour this summer with stops in: Portland, SF, LA, Austin (!), Nashville, NYC, and Philadelphia.

He’ll be accompanied by Starscream on many of the dates, with other artists joining for each show. And for those of you even more distant than I am from the usual NYC venues in which chiptunes events take place, European tour dates will be announced soon.

Crucial chiptune links, videos

I have a long list of chip music clips and links to get through — there’s some gems in here, so read up!:

  • The badass Nullsleep x Videograma shirt you see above is now for sale through 8bitpeoples.
  • Anamanaguchi set up an online shop so you can now buy the group’s CDs, shirts, etc. Speaking of the band, what’s the deal with them not performing at Blip Festival 2009 proper? Was Anamanaguchi not invited or did something else happen?
  • You can now buy a physical CD for Balun’s latest EP Memoria Textil (limited print run 100). I’ve listened to this all week, and it’s splendid, exceeding my high expectations. The group’s preparing a digital pay-what-you-want release for Bandcamp, too.

Trailer for Bit.Trip Void, the latest from Gaijin Games’s rhythm-based, minimalist Bit.Trip WiiWare series.

I’ve no idea what the big squares jumping around the screen are all about, but it looks like the goal is to collect the black pixels into the “void” while evading the bullet hell-esque hail of white pixels. Sounds easy enough, right? Probably not, knowing the Bit.Trip games.

The game features 4-player co-op, boss battles, “hyper-realistic retro cutscenes” and a chiptune soundtrack by micromusic favorite Nullsleep. You can see screenshots of the game at its teaser site, and even play it at the Penny Arcade Expo this weekend. Let us know how that goes!

“Fearless Flight” by Nullsleep.

Jeremiah Johnson (Nullsleep), one of the bigger names in the chiptune scene, just released a new EP titled Unconditional Acceleration:

“[It’s] an exploration of romance and tragedy in the 21st century. Five songs, limitless intensity. Ecstatic bursts of cascading waveforms race toward uncertainty. A feeling of ever increasing separation develops. Unattainable distances are approached and sheets of white noise issue forth from the fissures of an obsessively restructured reality.

The sound surrenders in memory of another time and place, to which we can never return.”

You can grab the album for free from Nullsleep’s site.

We haven’t posted many chiptune tracks lately. I will try to amend that in the near future!
