“Crystal Catacomb” by Orioto. It’s not often that you see Mega Man 5 fanart! But it’s not uncommon to see utterly lovely digital paintings of game scenes by Orioto.

“Sonic Boom” by Orioto. The artist has occupied himself with 3D conversions of previous art recently, but he took the time to make this original digital painting inspired by Sonic CD. Seeing how cool Sonic could look just makes the games that much more of a punch in the gut.
Speaking of Sonic games, there are some new Mushroom Hill Zone screenshots here of one that doesn’t look too bad: the 3DS version of Sonic Generations.

More 3D Mario art by Mikaël “Orioto” Aguirre. After seeing a favorable response to yesterday’s experiment on a certain influential blog, Orioto converted another of his digital Mario paintings to 3D, available either in wigglepic format or as a 3DS browser-friendly MPO here.
He then did the same for some of his Sonic artwork:

3D Sonic that looks cool! Miraculous!

“Foret en Fleur” by Mikaël “Orioto” Aguirre, made into an .MPO and wigglepic’d on 3D Porch. Orioto made a 3D version of his “impressionist” Super Mario World piece for viewing on 3DS browsers, as a “test.”
Being one of the most impressive, convincingly deep 3D images I’ve seen, I’m going to call it a successful test. You can look at the MPO yourself through that 3D Porch page with the Nintendo 3DS web browser, and a big version of Orioto’s original artwork here.

“Bang Bang” Cave Story artwork (click for wallpaper-sized version). This image appeared on the same Nintendo Power table of contents page that spilled the Cave Story DSiWare beans, and some people actually assumed it was a screenshot or a new visual style for the handheld port. It’s an understandable mistake, as the shot was sort of tiny.
Nicalis commissioned this art from Mikael “Orioto” Aguirre to commemorate this announcement and Cave Story WiiWare’s European release, which is still in the cards.
[Update: Nintendo Life scored some screenshots, which you can check out by clicking the image below.]
The studio says that Cave Story creator Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya has given his blessing to the DSiWare version, and that development on the game is completed — right now, it’s just undergoing “final testing internally”. Wow!

Alternate Altered Beast boxart by Daniel Vendrell Oduber of Ikari Studio (click for a larger version).
This dreadful game has stained the minds of several artists lately. There was Paul Hornschemeier’s Altered Garfield artwork two days ago, and now this fanmade Mega Drive cover art produced for a tribute collection to the title.
Video game wallpaper hero Mikael “Orioto” Aguirre also recently painted a dim and foggy scene dedicated to the wretched title, which you can download here:

“Somewhere” by Mikael “Orioto” Aguirre. Click for a breathtaking full-size version of this R-Type tribute!
I’d be too distracted to shoot anything! Which would be a nice excuse for my poor shmup performance, actually.
This official wallpaper for R-Type Tactics II: Operation Bitter Chocolate is also pretty rad! It turns out I just like looking at R-Type artwork.

“Do A Barrel Roll” by Mikael “Orioto” Aguirre (click for wallpaper version). Hurray for more rad StarFox fanart.
Speaking of Orioto’s work, someone recently decorated a Hori EX2 arcade stick with his Gunstar Heroes piece:

Absolutely wicked.

“Dogs and Bullets” by Mikael “Orioto” Aguirre. This piece reflects just how bleak the beginning of Contra 3 is, though we may never think about it: War has broken out in the streets, leaving a city lying in flaming ruin, overrun by wild mutant dogs and alien troops.
Although, in happier news, by Contra 3, the heroes have managed to acquire some form of shirt. So things are looking up.
