Dead or Alive Dimensions x Metroid: Other M collaboration trailer. This video concentrates more on Ridley and the Metriod-themed stage, but who knows, maybe Samus Aran will be an unlockable fighter?

I’d seen the box image before, but it wasn’t until James Mielke photographed his copy that I knew it was a slipcover with a cutout. I’m totally considering buying the Japanese version now, even if I don’t know how I’d play it. At least I wouldn’t have to listen to the dialogue again amirite.
I liked this boxart even before I knew of the special effect. It’s cool to look at, but the brightness of the face inside the visor, and the halftoned armor, are also a pretty elegant way to signify that the game is supposed to be about Samus the person and not Samus the yellow robot.

Metroid retrospective, narrated by Samus Aran (or rather her voice actress, Jessica Martin).
Just in case you haven’t seen it yet, Nintendo posted this great video catching viewers up on almost 25 years worth of story from the Metroid franchise, and preparing them for Other M’s upcoming release.
Oh, and you should also check out the new commercial posted on Metroid’s Japanese site, which compares and contrasts the Wii title with the original Famicom/NES game!

Check out Samus running like she stole somethin. When did she get so fast? Also, I didn’t expect the game to look this fun; Count me in!

“The Last Metroid Is In Captivity” by Patrick Prine (click for a larger version). The artist’s interpretation of Samus Aran seems so different from other fanart we’ve featured for the bounty hunter previously.
Some of you have expressed dissatisfaction with Nintendo’s new direction and look for Ms. Aran in the upcoming Metroid: Other M — which sparked this wonderful (and tasty) conversation between JC and I:
JC: Whenever people go on about Samus’s character design, I think, “Who are these people who care that much about whatever’s inside the armor?”
Eric: Yeah, I don’t understand people who invest so much of themselves in what she looks like.
JC: it could be filled with tacos, for all i care. The suit’s the important part. That would actually be a great twist ending: beat the game in under two hours to reveal a big pile of tacos.
On the topic Metroid: Other M’s Samus not looking at all like what some fans hoped for, it’s interesting to see how different her new voice actress, Jessica Martin, looks compared to the blonde and serious image we usually associate with the character:

Several people who’ve spent time with Metroid: Other M have complained about Samus’s voice actress sounding “stilted and lifeless” in the new game, but that issue didn’t seem to pop up in the most recent public trailer. Hopefully that won’t be an issue when the completed game releases in a few months! Trailer for “Deep Red”, a 1975 horror film from Italian director Dario Argento. You might have heard that Metroid co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto described this movie as “the greatest creation of his process”, not so much in terms of content and tone but in the filmmaker’s mastery of mood, timing, foreshadowing and contrast.
Yes, much like Juno, Sakamoto loves to drop Argento’s name whenever he can.
“I decided that without a doubt, I wanted to create things in the same manner as Argento did,” said Sakamoto during his keynote speech at the Game Developers Conference today. He also cited Luc Besson (Leon), Brian De Palma (Carrie, Scarface), John Woo (Face/Off), and the Hong Kong movie scene as influences in his design process.
The Metroid: Other M producer/scenario designer made sure to clarify, “I have great admiration for these directors, but it’s not like I have a complex about it or try to become one. They’ve helped bring that out in me.”

New Metroid: Other M trailer. It’s all FMV footage with no gameplay clips, but beggars can’t be choosers.
Something about the clip — perhaps its Samus’s voice, the overused bloom, the maudlin music, or a mix of all those elements — reminds me of Makoto Shinkai’s Voices of a Distant Star, at least in its sentimental tone. I’m making all sorts of untenable comparisons between games and other media today.

I’m sure some fans will take issue with Nintendo/Tecmo devoting parts of the game to Samus’s “fragile side”, but I actually enjoyed the Metroid manga — maybe this will be a little like that?
In related news, Sakamoto will deliver his first Western lecture at the Game Developers Conference this March. His talk is titled “From Metroid to Tomodachi Collection to WarioWare: Different Approaches for Different Audiences”:
“Mr. Sakamoto will talk about his thought processes and techniques on game designs that have allowed him to find market acceptance for his expansive portfolio of titles.”
I really wish I could attend GDC this year! It would be hard to beat DSi project lead Masato Kuwahara’s presentation at GDC 2009, though.

This tender piano composition opens up Nintendo’s teaser site for the upcoming Metroid game, accompanied by a rare Samus Aran audio clip (in Japanese): “A dream. It’s as if I was watching a playback of a tragedy that really happened.”
Metroid: Other M is slated to release in Japan this summer. Nintendo also revealed teaser sites with similarly sentimental music for two other Wii games: The Last Story from Archaic Sealed Heat developer Mistwalker; and Xenoblade (formerly Monado) from Xenosaga/Baten Kaitos studio Monolith Soft.
