Tiny Cartridge

Petit Computer trailer shows you some of the possibilities of the DSiWare tool. You can do all kinds of DS programs! As long as you can… program… in BASIC…

This is going to be so rad for so many users, who will suddenly get to make DS homebrew using a simple app. And it’ll be rad for me too, because, uh, I’ll get to see said homebrew.

Smileboom’s Petit Computer, that neat DSiWare app that lets you code games right in your own handheld, is coming to North America this summer thanks to Go Series publisher Gamebridge, bless their hearts.

Some of you might remember us writing about this before, noting how users have re-created classics like Tiny Trek and After Burner with the BASIC programming app. This is the mkII edition that came out in Japan in February with new features like voice synthesis, SD Card saving, and QR code sharing for your games.

It probably won’t be as approachable as WarioWare DIY when it comes to making your own video game snapshots, but it’s perfect for making an epic RPG starring Tiny.

Developer Smileboom is working on a second edition of its DSiWare BASIC programming app, Petit Computer. Petit Computer mkII adds a few new features including voice synthesis (!) SD card saving (!) and QR code input for code (!!)

You can hear a sample of the synthesized voice output in a video on the official site. It is, of course, in Japanese, since neither this nor its predecessor have been announced for release anywhere but Japan.

Wired Italy’s Francesco Fondi sent us this story about a DSi-based port of the 1971 Star Trek text gameTiny Trek, exhibited at Comiket 80, is a version of the text adventure built in Smileboom’s DSiWare game design utility Petit Computer.

If you want to learn how to use Petit Computer and you can read Japanese, you can actually get a guidebook for Petit Computer! I’m absolutely shocked — not by the fact that this tool is complicated enough to need a reference, but that a DSiWare game has a strategy guide.

Shooting Life by Konimiru. If you don’t remember seeing this simple DS shoot’em up announced anywhere or released at homebrew sites, that’s because this was created in Petit Computer, the Japan-only DSiWare app for programming your own games!

It has a Retro Game Challenge quality to it, doesn’t it? You can check out some sample Petit Computer games on SmileBoom official site. Wiz Fight (no relation to Wiz-Man) in particular has a rad Kung Fu-esque soundtrack.

Petit Computer, a DSiWare app allowing you to code your own games. It features 13 tools for creating elements like sprites and environments, as well as seven sample programs and three sample games to get you started. It’s like WarioWare D.I.Y. with a few key differences:

  • More robust toolset for creating games with a bigger scope (instead of microgames)
  • All the programming is done in BASIC with a text editor and a virtual keyboard
  • So far, it’s releasing just in Japan
  • Only Nintendo DSi or 3DS owners will be able to mess around with it

Developer Smile Boom will release Petit Computer (no relation to DS Dates mascot Petite Cartridge, at least as far as we know) on March 3rd in Japan for 800 Points.
