Colonel Sanders flying in Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity. I love this screenshot so, so much.

As revealed during TGS, Sega is offering Colonel Sanders as a partner character in the game, as one of the many promotional partnerships that Sega uses to fund the series. The result is so far beyond tacky that it’s now awesome.

The PSP game launches in February in Japan, but Sega will release a “special trial” (essentially a giant demo) in January, including KFC and Calorie Mate tie-in stuff.

Papercraft model of Phantasy Star Portable 2’s Lumia. You’re quite excused for thinking that was a mass-produced plastic figurine at first glance, and not a paper model, because holy crap how is that a paper model.

If you haven’t played the PSP’s Phantasy Star Portable 2 (another deficiency for which you’re absolved, since it’s not out in English yet, having just been released December 3 in Japan), Lumia is the sister of Phantasy Star Portable (and Phantasy Star Universe) protagonist Ethan Waber.

The Phantasy Star Portable 2 Accessory Set by Hori, containing a case, a flip-up face cover, decals, and five analog nub covers of varying levels of convexness (no idea what the deal is with these). A little bit of merchandising for Phantasy Star Portable 2 in case the merchandising in PSP2 isn’t enough.

The set will be out December 3 for ¥2,980 ($34.35).

Phantasy Star Portable 2 tie-in items. So Phantasy Star Zero has a couple of jokey magazines as weapons, and a couple of Nintendo items (the Samus gun is ace) but it doesn’t have a shield that projects a giant Famitsu logo. And it doesn’t have an Ocha-ken weapon.

The blatant overloading of the game with promotional content is far too hilarious to be offensive. And, you know, if this is what it takes to perpetuate the (expanding) Phantasy Star Online series, then it’s something Tiny Cartridge Presented by Inokichi Cup O’ Chicken Noodles can get behind.
