Roller Angels trailer. NCSX announced preorders for this game, which I’d never heard of, describing it as “a side scrolling 2D platform game with conventional controls and a graffiti theme.” Publisher Starfish classifies it as a “girls’ roller action” game.
So it’s kind of like Jet Set Radio, except side-scrolling, with art from whoever did the Tamagotchi Connection games, and with adorable children instead of adorable gang members. DSi users can create their own graffiti images.
Also, it’s a Starfish game, which means it won’t be any good, no matter how interesting it looks.

It seems like a pretty deep adventure, with usable items like ropes and bombs, and also treasure strewn about. Even without the infinite level design, I’d be in love with the style, not to mention the name, which is almost as much fun as the game itself. Spelunky!
It’s like a fun version of Spelunker, which is pretty accurate for the game as well!

A very excited producer showed me the game and explained the concept: a couple racing through town, facing disaster after disaster, in order to meet each other on a date. Gameplay involves running on stylus-drawn lines and climbing using a stretchy grappling hook.
A game like this, which isn’t about men shooting each other or aliens (and also isn’t about learning how to do math), is a very weird and risky move for a big publisher like Atari. Hell, even after N+, a hardcore (skill-based instead of exploration-based) platform game seems like a risky move. I’m not totally sold on the graphical style, but I already love pretty much everything else about this game. It’s exactly the kind of fresh thinking I like to see on the DS.
GoNintendo has all the screens from the press release.
tags / atari / the chase / platform / jcI won’t bet on Mushroom Men just yet, but I’ll gobble up anything related to the title based on the strength of the art… and Gamecock’s history of throwing lots of hilarity into their trailers.
