Pole’s Big Adventure shirt, by The King of Games’ Dotlike label. This is the second set of shirts designed for this jokey WiiWare platformer. As with everything related to this game, I think the design is delightfully weird, with the Poacher enemy on the front and “Neta” (an annoyingly difficult-to-translate Japanese comedy term, but basically “gag” in the game) on the back.

Since the shirt features the Poacher, here’s the Poacher’s theme from the WiiWare game.

Pole’s Big Adventure shirt (it’s t-shirt day… apparently!) There’s some kind of mysterious project in the works related to Sega’s in-jokey WiiWare platformer, the first part of which is these two t-shirts. The above shirt seriously just says “T-shirt” on the front. The shirts, produced in partnership with Super Channel, sell for about $30.

“However, the comedy is clearly aimed at a Japanese audience to the extent that the game often feels like an experimental performance of manzai, a Japanese 2-person comedy act that consists of a tsukkomi, who is something like a straight man, and a boke, who says absurd or stupid things. However, in this case, the bizarre 8-bit game itself is the boke, while a tsukkomi narrator expresses confusion and exasperation with the game’s absurdity via audio commentary.”

Excerpt from an excellent GameSpite article about Pole’s Big Adventure (or Paul’s Big Adventure). The article stresses that the game isn’t very good, but it crosses a lot of my interests (early Famicom-era platforming, self-referential humor in games, masocore). Of course, there is zero chance of seeing this thing outside of Japan. Then again, I said that about Retro Game Challenge!

Pole’s Big Adventure playthrough video, part 2. This amusing game, out today in Japan, seems to draw inspiration from stuff like I Wanna Be the Guy and Jinseiowatta no Daibouken, in that it inverts expected game tropes for humorous (and punishing) effect.

Speaking of humorous effects, Siliconera has the exclusive on a dick joke found in the game.

Eight minutes of Eventful Journey: Pole’s Big Adventure. The WiiWare game already imitates Japanese TV with the comedian’s narration and constant on-screen captioning, but this video takes it a step further by including a little window featuring Takao Miyoshi’s face as he reacts to the game.
